Jim, you are a kind soul, I can hear it in you voice. Helping your fellow man by sharing your knowledge is a special gift. And I agree with your "all things stop for coffee" attitude. I never considered the danger of cracking the plastic neck on the radiator & heater core, but now I will. Lastly. . . . . I better stock up on some Hi-Tech paper clips!

I just replaced top and bottom radiator hoses. I also got the radiator cap brand new. When the car first overhead a week ago. I found the bottom hose to be the culprit. Thus the reason I got new hoses. Thermostat got out in about 4 months ago and new water pump and timing belt done two weeks ago. I out antifreeze in run car and I touch the radiator cap but it doesn't feel hot when the car over heated. I found that weird. Also, that little vent over the radiator seems to release steam when the car overheats. Any ideas. Thanks in advance. I'm not much of a mechanic but trying to save money anyway I can.

So I have a 96 civic thats overheating, well from what I understand it comes very close to overheating, the AC/heat don't work, and from what the previous owner said I should replace the head gasket. When I originally owned the car years ago it had an overheating issue and I ended up replacing the thermostat and a couple hoses. But when I tried to "burp" the cooling system like people told me to do after opening the system up, it wasn't burping right, it would spit coolant up while fluctuating RPM. I'm just wondering how I can diagnose what exactly the problem is, thermostat has been replaced, a couple hoses, and the relay to the cooling fan cause it was burnt out. I just don't want to end up spending a bunch of money replacing things that end up not fixing the problem. Would a bad head gasket cause overheating issues on this scale?
@Luovuus
@Luovuus Жыл бұрын
When head gasket fails, you will have seemingly disappearing coolant (no external leak) and a steady stream of white smoke from exhaust pipe when at operating temperature.

Hi Steven, The tool I'm using is called a Power probe and you can find the company on line.If not let me know I will get a number for you.As for the overheating the thermostat may be sticking .Was it replaced?

No, it has not recently, but what would lead you to believe it is the problem?
@jimthecarguy
@jimthecarguy 8 жыл бұрын
Because if there is no leaks ,the sensor is new and the coolant fan is turning on and off.The only thing remaining is the radiator or the thermostat.Start with the easiest first .The thermostat.

Hi Jim, just wanted to send a thank you and followup. I pulled the old thermostat and testing in water, it was rated for 170F and did not open until well past 208F, probably closer to 212F boiling. Going to do full bleed and road test and refill and Ill let you know, but I think its solved. I also pulled relays and cleaned contacts, they had some anodized areas and carbon (sanded them a little).

Good question . You do need to have a thermostat in you car to regulate the flow of coolant. If you take it out and drive for a long time your car will over heat and at low temperature the car computer will not go into closed loop causing many other problems.

I have the same year honda civic i noticed that the gauge goes to the middle and im already stressing that something bad is happening to my honda. I had the water pump replaced and timing belt. I switched the hoses too and thermostat and coolant as well. Could this be of a bad radiator which i don't see leaks but notice the reservoir tank has powdery stuff by the end of the small hose to the radiator cap.

Do you need to drain all of the coolant if you are just swapping out the switch and not the hoses?
@TWIRKNOLOVE
@TWIRKNOLOVE 5 жыл бұрын
No. You don't need to drain the coolant. Just remove the hose on the thermostat side, replace the thermostat, and put the hose back on. Some coolant will spill and AIR is going to be introduced into the system which is not good so look up how to bleed the coolant system for this car for when you are done replacing the items. He should of mentioned that you should bleed the system because you're supposed to do it either way when doing this job whether you follow his instruction (draining the coolant) or mine. Air in the system (from not bleeding) will cause the engine to over heat if not done.

I am having this same problem, my 91 civic is overheating I just replaced the temp sensor, temp sending sensor, thermostat, and relay and It is still not turning on, if i take the fan and hook it straight up to the battery it comes right on. Do you think even though the coolant relay is new it can be bad? Thanks

I have a 98 Honda Civic and a few weeks ago it over heated. I noticed that the coolant in the over flow tank was boiling and the cap was off. Don't know if it was pressure from the engine. I'm not a mechanic so bare with me. I had the thermostat replaced about 3 months ago so it's fairly new. The car has 194000 miles. One other issue I've been having prior to the car overheating is that I don't have any heat in the cabin. Don't know if the heater core is no good or just clogged. Could the water pump or head gasket have anything to do with either of my issues. I did check the cooling fan and it turns on. Any advice as to what I can check next to fix over heating. I'm going to check hoses again. Thanks in advance.

It’s the head gasket get the head resurfaced and use a Fel pro gasket and new OEM Head bolts also make sure your exhaust manifold has no cracks and that your 5 valve cover bolts and valve cover gasket are good.

Samson Alonge Unfortunately it sounds like the head gasket. There is a tool you could buy to check for exhaust in the cooling system. That tool will confirm if it is the head gasket. Try to get it at your local parts store.

At first, I was worried my fan and not turning when i turn on my car. Im having over heating issue with my 98 Honda Civic lx and found milky liquid on the end of my radiator cap so i'm assuming i blew my head gasket but along with my replacing that issue i wanna make sure this doesn't happen again. What is your best advice to AVOID this expensive replacement?
@TWIRKNOLOVE
@TWIRKNOLOVE 5 жыл бұрын
You pull over and shut the car off when it is over heating. Milky residue isn't always a sign of headgasket. Water condensation can form on the cap naturally. A better indication of a blown head gasket is the coolant being milky and thick (oil introduced into the system) or your oil being milky/thick (vice versa).
