Here's one I'm trying. Tape a string to one of those mini led flashlights and lower it into the plug tubes. This after removing the intake/exhaust manifolds. Then look through the ports for traces of light..if you see some the valve is bent.

Thank you for sharing this video. Even though this is a different motor to mine its very similar in how its built. I've got the 6A12tt and this is the only video ive found that remotely resembles my motor :) thanks again!

Please read if you’re a new owner or are in the market for a 3000gt or dodge Stealth. It’s very important!!!!!! Omg I’m still in love with my 1992 Mitsubishi 3000gt Vr4 that I bought brand new when I was a senior in high school. I will never part with my vr4. But this op is sooo right about taking care of the timing belt and tensioner on all of the DOHC 3000gt and dodge Stealth engines. Both turbo and natural aspiration engines are interference engines and if you do not maintain your timing belt, water pump, tensioner adjuster, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley with ONLY GENUINE MITSUBISHI OEM DEALER PARTS your engine will jump time and the pistons will ram 🐏 not the valves bending them. My timing belt was defective from the factory and broke 250 miles into owning my car and both heads were replaced under the warranty. But I couldn’t agree more with the op. If your belt breaks or jumps time more then 3 teeth on the cam gears then you definitely have bent valves. Even if you replace all the timing components and the car starts up. It’s gunna run rough no matter what you do. And it’s also now a ticking time bomb for further and catastrophic engine damage because now those bent valves are not seating correctly and destroy/crack the heads around the valve seats. In addition That valve is now weak and runs the risk of the Bell breaking off and literally tearing apart that cylinder. I’ve been a 3/s mechanic for years now because after my 3 year warranty ran out I taught myself how to work on these cars. And now it’s help other 3/s owners with their cars. The only exception to this are the 3rd gen non turbo 3000gt base and all Dodge Stealth base models that came with the SOHC engine. If your timing belt snaps off of jumps time you can just slap a new belt on and no harm no foul. But in my 27 years of owning my vr4 I learned 2 things 1) NEVER NEVER IGNORE THAT TIMING BELT. Pull the cover off every 3000 miles and look at it. (Don’t let the bolt collar from the upper cover fall into that timing compartment). Check it for cracks and tension). If you just bought the car and the owner can’t show you proof of when the timing belt was replaced then replace it yourself. Spent the $900 bucks because it will save you the 7 grand a rebuild will cost you. Because now 25+ years later if your timing jumps chances are your pistons are gunna crack from the contact with the valves. So it will be a full rebuild (I’ve even seen the pistons striking the valves damage the rod bearing on one engine I did). So please don’t sleep on that timing belt of the tensioner. And never never use anything but genuine Mitsubishi timing components (unless you are building a stage 2 racing engine. Then you would go with the Gates Kevlar racing belt. But for regular driving it’s not necessary). 2) look under your car at the oil pan and chances are there will be a dent in the circular out dent of the oil pan. This comes from mechanic shops that don’t know how to work on these cars and while changing the timing belt they will place the Jack right under the oil pan to raise the engine up to remove and install the drivers side engine mount. This is literally a grenade with a pin pulled out. Because there is literally 2-3 millimeters of clearance between the oil pick up for the engine and the bottom of the oil pan. The engine will function normally under normal driving but the minute you either go into boost or put a load on the engine it’s being starved of oil and just wiping all the meat off the main and rod bearings. This is a true emergency. Don’t buy this car unless it’s dirt Cheap. And if you see this dent in your oil pan don’t drive it at all anymore until you remove that oil pan and hammer out the dent. All you need to do is on a non turbo model is remove the exhaust down pipe, starter, the 20 oil pan bolts and carefully remove the oil pan. Hammer out the dent, inspect the oil pickup for damage. Clean everything since you already have it off. Clean it good. Apply a thin coat or RTV sealant and bolt it back up in sequence and re install the starter and down pipe. For the vr4 and stealth twin Turbo cars there are a few more steps. Remove the down pipe, starter, and in addition you will need to remove the turbo oil drain lines where they bolt onto the oil pan And replace the gaskets which are very cheap, and remove the transfer case. When you remove it you can just gently lay it on the clean floor but I recommend checking to make sure it isn’t leaking because there was a recall years ago with the transfer case leaking and locking up without warning at high speeds. So give it a good once over. But other then that the oil pan is the same as the other one. Please please take everything that I’m telling you seriously. Most of you already know this. But this post is for the new owner of a Stealth or 3000gt or someone who is new to this platform and is considering buying one. My opinion save up for either the 3000gt vr4 model or the Dodge StealthRT/TT twin turbo.

How about using a borescope through the spark plug holes to diagnos bent valves by visualizing if the close completely flush? I saw a few videos on this and tried it myself, but couldn't see the valves no matter how much i tried twisting or adjusting the borescope

You shouldve also looked inside each spark plug well with a boroscope to see if the tops of any pistons were damged from hitting valves.

Hey, I have an engine that the belt broke on, the valves have definitely hit the pistons but I'm looking at the valves after removing the head and they really don't look bent at all, can they still lose all compression if they're bent just a tiny bit? I have one cylinder with zero compression I was just kinda expecting an obviously bent valve but it all looks ok to the eye.

We know that the valves hit the piston therefore they are bent. So put the camera down there in each cylinder and look at the piston or the valves for nicks. They will show as shiny indentations.
@crazysexycool180
@crazysexycool180 6 ай бұрын
no need for all that the valves are softer then the pistons an indention on the piston is no big deal but the bent valve will cause low or no compression

Do timing chains break also? I heard somebody say if you change the oil frequently that prevents breakage. This sounded like a expensive damage repair. What is your secondary channel again?? Taxi something.
@Raevenswood
@Raevenswood 5 жыл бұрын
Timing chains can break but they usually last 200-250k and will show signs of wear before breaking. A lot of the time timing chains are used on interference engines because they are more reliable than a belt. Having a belt driven interference engine kind of sucks for the very reason we see in this video.

check the head surface (the one that mates with the block) with a metal straight edge in all directions. If it is straight you don't need to machine the head...if it is uneven that means the head is warped and needs to be machined.
