How to diagnose faulty Glow Plugs - error P1351 on Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 1.6 hdi

My Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 1.6 HDI fell thru at the MOT. It had a license plate light which wasn't working. More important was the error shown in the OBD codes. It showed the, for Citroen, infamous P1351. Basically this error tells the Glow relay or a Glow Plug is defective. In this video I show you how to diagnose it.

Hi this is a great video. A process also shown in the RTA manual of this car. One thing i wonder, is do the relay ( it contains alot of chips ) sense the broken glowplug and then don't turn the relay on even though you activate manual in diagbox? I changed the relay, the preheat light came on in dashboard, then it didn't come on again and same p1351 fault came on. So i really wonder if when the glowplug are fixed, will the relay register and start to function again? I haven't been able to find much info on the procedure of this relay. And all this glowplugs, dpf, eolyse etc is a first for me.

If ground doesn't work, for sure the system can't work and you found your cause. Follow where it connects to. Probably it needs some cleaning to get a proper ground again.

It doesn't. It can be measured from the connection.

That's indeed the same procedure. It might be the relay, but it more or less never is the case. So you most likely need to change the glow plug

Hi, my C4 1.6 hdi the glow plugs are all damaged (resistance is in the order of Mohms), but it is strange that the car starts well.

Diogo Primor I don’t think that they are normally needed for starting, more to reduce emissions on warm up???

It is checking for ohm. With measuring the resistance out can be measured if it functional or not

On french cars, Cylinder 1 normally is nearest flywheel/gearbox, not cylinder 4. But else nice!

My C4 1,6 HDI has a P1351, nevertheless it fires right up, even on subzero days??!!

The fault code P1351 also relates to cam shaft sensor.

The glow plugs are not really needed. On the old skool diesel engines they were really needed.

the diagnostics showed me the spark plug relay. when I replaced it, it said that the relay was not turned on. then i replaced the spark plugs and it was ok. this model does not have advanced diagnostics. not particularly exactly what is wrong

Let me just complete the info on your picture( blue connector clip facing down as you show): bottom row from left to right: 1 2 3 pins; middle row left to right 4 5 pins; top row left to right 6 7 8 pins. Pin 2 - plug 1; pin 7 - plug 2; pin 1 - plug 3; pin 6 - plug 4; pin 5 - EARTH; pin 4- 12 Volt. All the pin numbers should be printed in the male relay connector. So: on your picture: bottom row on the left: Cylinder ? - 3 ; next to that Cylinder 1. Top most row: Cylinder 4 as you pointed. The other one is cylinder 2.
