How To Diet To Lose Fat FOR GOOD (4 Phases)

If you’re watching this video, chances are, you’re wondering how to diet to lose fat for good. Most people have been taught to use approaches that set themselves up for failure in the long run, by physiologically messing up their bodies with diets that leave them in a position where it’s now very hard to strip off that excess fat. But, in this video, with the help of Dr. Eric Trexler, pro body-builder and PhD researcher, I’m going to show you exactly how to diet properly so you can undo the damage you may have done from your previous dieting attempts (i.e. maintenance calories are too low) and break through your weight loss plateau. I’ll also show you how to keep the weight off so that once you strip off that excess fat, it’s gone forever.
The first thing we want to do here is something called a recovery phase, which helps with 3 goals: restore the lean muscle mass that you lost, restore any hormonal imbalances (related to cutting your maintenance calories too low), and to just get you in a better mindset. To accomplish this, all you’re going to do is simply bump up your calories to whatever your maintenance calories currently are or even slightly above this, while also cutting back on your cardio. As for how long you should stay in this recovery phase for, Eric recommends at least a couple months for most people.
When you’re ready though, phase 2 is where we can give dieting another shot - but this time we need to do it right. Which means that we need to set up our fat loss phase in a way that minimizes muscle loss AND minimizes the metabolic adaptation we typically experience throughout our diet. And as outlined in Eric’s research papers, there are a few ways to do this. First, you need to avoid using a very aggressive calorie deficit. This equates to roughly only a 15-25% calorie deficit, but just keep an eye on how your bodyweight progresses and adjust accordingly. Next, we want to use an approach called intermittent dieting. And lastly, you need to ensure that you’re eating a high protein diet (1.8-2.7 g/kg bodyweight) along with high volume, low calorie, filling foods. So basically, you apply these 3 steps until you’ve successfully pushed past your weight loss plateau.
Then, it’s time to transition to phase 3. What we want to do here is simply find a way that you can maintain your weight loss in a sustainable way. One option is a reverse diet. Although the effect this has does seem to vary individually, often times what happens is even though you’re adding more and more calories back into your diet, your body counteracts this by essentially gets out of that “dieting” mindset and tends to start burning more calories through subconscious increases in daily activity, or NEAT to slowly bump up your metabolism. Imaginably, this is the crucial step when it comes to how to keep the weight off after your diet. However, keep in mind that again this does vary individually as people respond to increases in calorie intake differently.
And then, from here, it really is up to you where to go next. You could either maintain your new physique with relative ease with new your higher calorie intake, or you could choose to now focus more on muscle growth. Now although this whole ‘how to diet to lose fat for good’ process may seem very complex and you may be feeling as if there’s no hope for you, that just simply isn’t true. I’m not going to lie it will take time, but by following these 4 phases, remaining patient, and combining this with a solid training and nutrition plan, then you can and will be able to strip off that fat for good.
On that note though guys, for those who do need that extra bit of help when it comes to learning how to diet properly, my step-by-step programs have been designed to guide you through each of these phases in detail. It comes fully equipped with software that enables you to actually know exactly what your metabolism is at and how its changing week after week as you strip off fat, so that you can easily break through any plateau you encounter along the way and lean down in the most efficient way possible just like several of our Built With Science members have done with their programs. @@gabrielleathalia1359 you need to be more accurate with your Macros. You need to be around 10-13% body fat for abs to show through. This will take a strict and healthy regimented schedule. Where there is a will there is a way. You can either get results or make excuses, it's up to you.

Time stamps are below! The problem with many dieting approaches: 1:20 Phase 1 4:36 Phase 2 7:06 Phase 3 9:37 Phase 4: 15:33 . Hope you enjoy this one! Let me know what you think of this video style, I'm planning to do some more collaborations like this going forward and want to hear your thoughts/feedback 👇! . Note: Minor calculation error at 5:54! 180lbs x 15 = 2,700 calories as maintenance if you went with that, and 180lbs x 14 = 2,520 calories if you went with that.

@Faem 06 , I myself had an ankle injury 9 months ago, it took me 6 months just to walk again, i had to also prepare for my tests, I was 94kg when i had the accident but after recovering (Still couldn't do squats or jogging) I am at 68kg btw I am 178cm, I am following Jeremy, Athlean X and Guru Mann. For me intermittent fasting, drinking green tea, crunches worked(started at 25 and increased it to 100 over 4 month period), i also changed to eating bran flakes without sugar and oats with skim milk for breakfast. Hopefully it helped, Stay strong.

Summary of four phases: 1) Recovery Phase -Restore lean mass, boost metabolic rate, keep muscle, -Should take 1-4 months. Take your weight and multiply by 14or15 to get your calorie range goal. 2) Fatloss phase -Should be losing around 0.7% of your bodyweight per week. (Take your weight and multiply by 0.007 to give you pounds lost every week) [Progressive calorie deficit] 15-20% So reduce your calories by multiplying your maintenance between .8-.85 -Should take 6-8weeks at diet calories -2 week break at maintenance right after (intermittent dieting) Diet tips: •High Protein diet (0.7-1gram per pound) Grams should match your weight •Spread your protein throughout the day •Unprocessed foods •Eat satiating foods 3) Reverse dieting -Tips: •Don’t go back to original maintenance •Don’t change your cardio levels •No cheat days The reverse diet should maintain your weight loss. After the diet you should have a new maintenance (multiply your new weight by 14 or 15) and then add 200 calories. 4)Build? You can stay at maintenance or bulk up. -To bulk: •Increase your calories by 15-20% •After 1-4 months, go back to phase 2

Recognize which are the highest calorie foods and eat smaller portions of it. Cut up some fresh veg on the side to make up for it. Cutting the portions may be hard because I'm sure that high calorie home cooking can be irresistible but you just gotta commit and eat slowly. It may take you 20 mins to realize you're full. On the occasion of I crack and want mac n cheese ill make 1 box with my hubby, have a small portion, but load up on a kickass salad on the side for example. Good luck, be strong!

Jeremy, this video is exactly what I was looking for. I started tracking what I eat and exercising consistently for almost 2 years now and I wen from about 184lbs to 145lbs. Over the past 3 months I have been fluctuating from 144-146 lbs while eating 1450 calories which should be giving me 1-1.5 lbs weight loss per week. My goal is not necessarily weight loss but fat loss, I measure my body fat % weekly with calipers and I am currently at 15%. Like you mention in your video, I've reached a state where my body has adapted to my diet and am no longer going down probably because I've been going down for almost two years. I will be going through the recover phase and advancing in the steps you display in this video. Thanks so much for your help, really appreciate it!

There is only so much stress a body can take before it stops giving up the caleries. The maintenance will help regulate it and help with the stress you put it through for such a long time. But then return to the calories after a week or two break and then you can go back onto it.

@@E_Rico back to yo-yo kinda dieting, tbh, but I will say I've now gone about 6 months without GAINING weight due to having a better understanding of my calorie intake without even tracking. This is the longest I've gone without gaining weight in about 12 years. I'll be back to dieting/working out this summer when my wife (teacher) is off work for the summer. We'll see how it goes next school year but I'm just gonna set a small goal for the summer and then try to maintain that again. Too hard to track macros/calories with family and working 70 hours a week. May be an excuse, but it's absolutely a more legitimate one lol. I still think the slow diet method is the most enjoyable one I've ever been on due to not needing to COMPLETELY deprive myself of the nice things. I'll set a small goal this Summer and then more small goals throughout the year. For now, I'm counting not gaining weight as a small win.

My biggest takeways from this video -take your time -higher protein -don’t give up completely, you might go on diet breaks, you might even need them Things I’d like to add -eat more veggies -focus on eating healthy, nutrient dense foods, your body might just be trying to replenish lost nutrients -don’t be afraid of fat, eating just protein and carbs all the time could keep you hungry (in b4 Greg Doucette) -be thankful, thankful that you have access to food, let alone healthy food to nourish your body well. You’re in a small group of privileged people. The problem you’re facing with weight management is a much more desirable issue than other people who are starving, malnourished, and eating crappy foods. But your guilt, fear, and perceived suffering can make anything feel much worse than it is

I lost weight really quickly at first because of my intense calorie deficit, work load, and gym time and got back to my high school weight. I've plateaued now that I'm back at the weight my body has been for years. Now it's really hard losing more because now I know my deficit was too low and have been working on gradually increasing it. I haven't put it back on but I'm just tryna make sure what I'm doing now is sustainable and I can do forever. Hopefully I've changed my habits for the better.

This is just the video I needed to confirm my theory (mentioned below). I did keto and it wrecked my body, literally! I tore both of my menisci because my body got so weak doing keto and caused me to lose a lot of muscle (without training/cardio). And so, I had to quit. And my gut feeling was telling me to do strength training first (with an adequate amount of protein, carbs, and fats in my diet) to recover from that before I start doing fat loss. Thank you for this, Jeremy! I am now following a 3-day weight training with 3-day 30-45 minute walk, and I'm feeling great!

some unsolicited advice...eat plant based whole foods and you dont have to count calories. i also began intermittent fasting (20:4) and dropped a ton of weight. whatever you do has to be a lifestyle change meaning it cant be temporary or else youll simply regain after you stop. lastly drink tons of water and go on long walks. good luck.

Outstanding. I’m losing an average of 3 pounds per month, and I’m happy with it. I eat balanced meals, and never feel deprived. It’s been about 4 months and I have not felt any need for cheat meals or binging. My calorie deficit is about 200-300 per day. The progress is slow, but steady. I’m happy and looking forward to losing more fat through the months, years. Thank you for not encouraging fad diets which are often unhealthy, and almost always unsustainable, unnatural.

Wadizzit I can’t stand fad diets. I’m a girl by the way, and it’s really irritating to just focus on eliminating foods. I’d rather take my time, and have the patience to do it the right way. When we deprive ourselves of the needed nutrients, our body recognises that and becomes rebellious. I love the food I eat, and I love the energy it gives me during my workouts. I feel happy all day. 💜

Important question: What brand of tank top do you wear? I'm a fellow Canadian in South Korea, but I've scoured all the major sports retailers in North America and can't seem to find a decent fitting tank top like yours. Where can I get that tank top that you wear in your videos (the blue or gray)?

After that I learned now to reverse diet for a little bit in order to maintain my goal weight, then increase the weights and bulk up by 15 pounds and cut down another 10. dinodude18 that’s tough. I’d recommend: 1) starting with a base of oatmeal, brown rice, carrots, eggs, bone in chicken, and bananas cause that stuff is always cheap 2) I rotate my other fruits, veggies and meats based in what’s on sale that week 3) if it’s on a great sale, buy and freeze. For example, my store had blueberries 99 cent pint last week so I got a bunch 4) talk to the butcher at your grocery store and find out what time of day they mark down the meat Hope that helps man good luck
