Digging clams is actually a lot of fun and a great way to provide yourself with fresh and free sea food. Plan to have clams for dinner the next time your family returns from the beach. Remember to always check online or on posts at location for government shell fish advisories. You cannot cook paralytic shell fish poisoning out of the clams. And it is illegal to dig for them even for bait when an advisory is issued in that area.

I live in Ohio and am taking this tip to dig muscles here too---right now they a lowering the water by holding water at dams which exposes the large beach area here and have seen lots of muscles and lake clams and some people are already digging but I think it highly regulated here----thank you for the video.

Is it safe to eat freshwater bivalves? I think it may not be. I would check with your state's fish and game office first.

Nice looking clams, how do you cook them? here in the Pacific Northwest(Seattle, Wa) I harvest mostly manlia/littleneck or steamers about 1-1/2" to 2" which i steam or saute.

+w ching We shuck half the first night and rinse the sand out and then batter and deep fry. The other half remain in a bucket of clean ocean water which we then throw in corn meal. The clams eat up the corn meal and are less sandy for when we steam them. I need to experiment with sand removal techniques. Any suggestions?

+Farm Forage Your doing it just the way i do it, I think the corn meal was just a myth thing but when adding it to the salt-water it gives the clams the illusion of plankton thus when they eat the corn meal they spit it out and clean their stomachs of sand&grit. But now i just forgo the corn meal and purge the clams in salt-water for 2-3 days and when cook them i have very little sand&grit. I also find that just before you cook them a very through rinse with cold water helps. Gd. luck clamming!!

After purging for 2 or 3 days you've also got rid of any toxins in them, but you must keep changing the water otherwise they use up all the oxygen in the water and drown

Good point not to leave them too long without circulating some oxygen in. We eat them all within 24-36 hours. They are always still alive when we are rdy to eat them. Histamine cannot be cooked out of decaying fish but can be reduced by keeping cold. Our bucket goes right in the fridge which may also slow their metabolisms.

It would depend on where you are located (country and region) and then it could still be closed due to paralytic shell fish poisoning. The limit in my area of Nova Scotia is 100 per person per day provided the season is open and is not closed due to other reasons.

You can call for your local tide times or google for tide tables - it tells you when it's high tide and low tide...

I dig clams for a living and this is NOT the way to do it. I understand that this method are for those without tools but you are going to be breaking more clams than you will be harvesting and that's a good way to piss off all the clammers in the area. For any interested in clamming, please invest in a clam hoe or learn how to dig clams by hand.
