The trapjaw phenomenon is definitely interesting. Trapjaws take a long time to grow and are pretty fragile in captivity. Which makes their domination so unexpected. But since you made this awesome list and graphs it's started to make sense how it happened. The other ant species relied on food offerings to keep their numbers stable. Once you left for UK again and left them with no offerings. The other ants likely shrank in population while the fragile trapjaws could prey on pretty much anything without offerings. But I have to admit the speed of the domination was still way faster than i would have thought. A predator probably wouldn't stop them considering how good they are at self-preservation. But if they had a powerful rival ant colony in the tank it could push them out of productive areas of vivarium. Keep us updated on this, so interesting!

I recommend some Microhyla frogs. They will eat pretty much small enough to fit in their mouths but in the wild I know stomach contents studies of a few species have found over 50% of their stomach contents to be ants. Obviously there are a number of species that haven't been tested but given the fact members of the genus are a similar size and live a similar lifestyle to eachother it's reasonable to assume the diet is also similar. Alternatively Kaloula pulchra could be an option being more commonly available and also eat a lot of ants. Though they will also eat other larger prey too so keep that in mind.

I had the same thoughts about adding some smaller salamander species.
@thebloodyenglish6620
@thebloodyenglish6620 Ай бұрын
@@scottmclaughlin1410 salamanders wouldn't be a good option for this setup. While they may eat some ants for most species they don't eat a lot of ants and this enclosure will be too warm for long term success for most species (certain species from the Bolitoglossa genus are the only ones I can think of being fine in this setup with the warmer temperature long term). Most salamanders are pretty sensitive to long term exposure to warmer temperature, though this impact might not be obvious. Like with Fire Salamanders (a very commonly kept species and one I keep outdoors) a lot of care sheets say they live around 10yr. Which to most people sounds like a long time given the fact they're a small animal. But most people keep them indoors and often they're kept at 18-22c which is actually too warm for them to do well long term if kept consistently at these temps (just isn't warm enough to immediately kill them). In reality if they're kept cold enough they live significantly longer then 10yr living into their late 40s and even mid 50s. You see it similar with Axolotls. A lot of people talk about how delicate they are being super sensitive to water conditions and often at risk of bacterial and fungal infections, bloat etc and say they're a super challenging species to keep. And they are if kept too warm. Most people try to use a chiller to keep them around 18c but again long term this is actually still too warm, I should say in my opinion. For reference 17c is when I start to get concerned and if the water hits 18c I'm starting to take measures to cool it down. As soon as you keep them colder they instantly turn into a very tough and hardy animal that hardly ever get sick. In the wild they are from very cold water getting down to 6c on average in the winter and not uncommon for it to get colder and staying around 16c at the warm time of year spiking up to 18/19c for short periods of time. People often say they live around 7-10yr and rarely up to 15yr. But when you talk to people who keep them colder then how people usually keep them they usually live into their 20s and even into their 30s. I got a group I keep outdoors in the UK, even in winter when the water is covered in about 4inch of ice I still see them hunting for small aquatic invertebrates though very slowly 😅 I've got some which I've had for 8yr and the old man who I got those original ones from had them for 14yr, and he did the same as me which is keeping them in a tub full of plants with an overflow but no filter outdoors in a shady spot. In the past 8yr I've never had any issue whatsoever and the same experience is had by others who keep them in the same way.

@@scottmclaughlin1410 What species did you look at and which ones had ants be a significant portion of the diet, the only ones I know of that have a diet where ants play a significant role is members of the Plethodon genus though they avoid species that have chemical defences. So curious to learn what other ones do. PS incase my reply comes across argumentative/pointed that's not it at all it's genuine curiosity as it's something I'd like to keep in mind in the future incase I keep any of the species you mention in the future. As for a lot of species I keep I try to make diets as natural as possible, obviously can't necessarily get the exact prey species but I try to keep their diet based on the prey types. Like when I used to keep species that diets consisted significantly of ants I kept several ant species to be the main food source, fish, frog & reptile eaters having a diet mostly of these things or purley of these things depending on the natural diet (breeding my own fish, frogs, toads, lizards & snakes as feeders) etc. Just realised how my comment might come across/be open to interpretation given it's just text 😅

@kykel4948
@kykel4948 2 ай бұрын
@@nordicants6232See my comment. I would recommend starting with spiders, then adjust from there. I'd recommend a breeding pair too. The babies will feed heavily on small prey items like ants as they grow but are still small enough to be prey themselves and thus not grow out of control. The issues with amphibians and reptiles is they will target more than just the ants on a much wider scale. Frogs, toads, skinks, etc won't just eat ants but also isopods, slugs, crickets, beetles etc. They won't eat just the ants but also the prey items of the ants which might still make the growing imbalance ultimately worse. They also have no natural predators in your vivarium. Spiders do not feed on all the same prey as reptiles and amphibians due to a number of traits such as size and natural defenses. They are smaller and less likely to target larger prey items that the others would target but also, they have stricter preferences. Example is that most spiders don't like slugs. Spiders however also checks and balance themselves. Spiders will not only prey on the other organisms in the vivarium but also each other and they are still small enough to be prey to your current reptiles and amphibians in the enclosure. They will even fall victim to the ants themselves on occasion. Whilst they are a step up on the food chain from the ants, they are still low enough to be prey to them as well.

@@nordicants6232 I'm not sure. I think larger predators such as amphibians and reptiles will put a faster dent in their numbers compared to spiders. Your vivarium does have a water segment so I imagine amphibians at least have a place to escape to if the ants try to harass them?

You need some more spiders, preferably hunter spiders like wolf spiders or various ground spiders. Webbing spiders will help but they are less likely to web near the ground and might not catch as many ants as they do other insects. Perhaps a couple of toads but something else you could also do is ant lion larvae, which feeds almost exclusively on ants. These however become flying insects later and may only be a temporary solution if you don't have a sealed environment to keep them from escaping. You have to be careful with the balance. Hunter spiders like wolf spiders or ground webbing spiders would be best. Especially breeding pairs. The spiderlings will feed quite heavily on your ants as they grow. You want to pick specific predators that are more likely to eat ants rather than general hunters. Toads and frogs are opportunistic eaters that will eat anything, not just your ants but toads are also ground dwelling vs frogs which tend to be more arboreal. I would only do frogs or toads as a last resort as they will likely also feed on other organisms besides ants which ultimately could still contribute to the imbalance in the system.
@nordicants6232
@nordicants6232 2 ай бұрын
Thank you!! Great points on the spiders, will need to get ones that hunt on the ground… and for the toad/frogs being generalists is perfect as if any antcolony becomes too big they will get predated on more and therefore get balanced out. Great points! What frog/toad do you reckon I add?
@kykel4948

@@nordicants6232 With toads, I don't know the specific species in your region but you want to be careful you don't pick one that gets too large. A smaller species of toad like the American Toad (just an example of the size) would be best. Toads are very voracious eaters, even moreso than frogs and can be brazen in their food choice even attempting to eat things close to their own size. A dwarf toad species might honestly be best if you could get your hands on one. With frogs, most species will do but make sure the one you get has the right environment and doesn't get too large for the enclosure. Frogs need much higher humidity than toads to be comfortable in their environment.

@@nordicants6232 That's ultimately your call. I'd recommend some hunter spiders and a toad after that. A dwarf toad will feed on smaller prey and is thus more likely to eat the ants so if you get a toad, that's my recommendation. I've had minimal experience with dwarf toads though, only ever owned a dwarf american toad but the care was exactly the same for it compared to others. I would do some research before buying one. Wow!!! This was unexpected. I would have thought the marauder colony more likely to have increased in numbers more quickly than the trap jaw colony. Mind you, I have only seen trap jaws in captivity, but they seemed finicky to maintain, and didn’t have explosive growth. It would seem your predators are choosing other species over the trap jaws, giving them an edge. Perhaps they are able to cause a predator more pain than the others, or they have developed a strategy of mobbing any predator in their territory, and killing them by force of numbers hence the edge of larger population. Amphibian s of some sort might be good predators for them, reproducing in water, where they are safe from the ants, and mostly in or near the water except when seeking food. A thick rubbery hide may also be an advantage. I know you are more on top of this than I am, and I will gladly see what you decide to do. I still miss that hammer head.🖤🇨🇦

I just am surprised at the explosive growth of the trap jaw colony, any I have seen before are slow to grow, and easily lost,, but yours appear to go against my previous experience. Perhaps it is where they have positioned themselves in the vivarium? I love your vivarium regardless of who is in residence, and have lots of patience, your uploads are always worth waiting for. I'm not sure you could realistically control these kinds of ants with predation. Your best bet would be around parasites , parasitoids and disease, etc. Most predators would just take an occasional meal, unthreatening for the demograhy, and few things would dare to close an ant’s nest. Exactly like man-eating lions. They can't stop us from owning the savanna. Sociality tends to make you that broken.

@@nordicants6232 The parasitoids might work for disturbing ants' behaviors (it's proved for fire ants, they are more cautious and spend less time outdoors when parasitoid flies are around). But I guess a toad could do the trick , provided they will compensate with their own predation the foraging area loss. Even one predatory ants in a terrarium is a big deal given how much space and preys they need in the wild. Maybe changing the landscape to make refuges zone hard for ants to reach ? Or maybe temporary refuge with a door to cut ants access and let time for prey to reproduce. A bit like pasture areas ? By the way with a bit of coding you could use some AI machine vision tools to monitor insects populations and ants trails.

@@nordicants6232 I think cataglyphis and messor would be good choices. maybe a temporary pond in the middle like your old vivarium for triops or other shrimp that live in that habitat

I just watched the video, I don't think spiders can stop those ants. Most of the spiders don't hunt ants at all and even if you put one that do it, they won't be enough of them.

Probably nothing can save it from dominating ants colony. Just watch what gonna happen or reset it. I would prefer the 1st option 🙂@@nordicants6232
