Although two friends of mine grow long beans totally neglected, allowing them to sprawl and just getting a light harvest, I intend to follow your method,alternating plantings on two 3m long trellises. As well as their normal green and red varieties , I have been able to buy some seeds of different cultivars which I will try in later gardens. I really like your video, as you have such a full understanding of your work. Best wishes from tropical Australia!

Thank you for going into detail about pruning and getting the vines to climb on the trellis. Not many KZbin videos focus on that.

Well! This is a lot of solid information! I have grown different beans on a trellis like this, maybe five years now. When I put up the trellis and the strings I thought I was finished, now I see that was just the beginning! This gives me some hope, I have to say. It is just as you say, if you don't manage the vines they just grow into a tangled mess. There certainly are beans (and edible leaves and shoots!) but clearly not what it could be. Also I think that you're saying that the managed plants will be stronger. I think if I keep up with those shoots and take them off quickly all of that can be eaten! I'm very interested in plants that have edible leaves, so I don't have to wait for an eventual harvest, which may never occur!

I am so grateful to you for your videos. I hail from North-East India and our choice of vegetables are almost same. I tried looking for good videos that will help me grow my vegetables but all I got was disappointment. And then I came across your videos and they are a vegetable gardener's delight!! I grew malabar spinach, long beans, ivy gourd, cherry tomatoes, pumpkin and hyacinth beans after checking out your videos. Hopefully they will grow out to be great!

I would love to see you cover Asian vegetable growing basics in a video. I mean by that, to answer the question 'What is Asian traditional gardening really ?' One can answer that about permaculture, organic vegetable growing, French intensive and so forth. I believe Asian gardening is diverse, but it is definable in comparison to the rest of the world, and it is different in many wonderful ways. Whenever I see videos of Asian vegetable gardens they are fabulous. I asked a Chinese friend of mine where I could learn and he said there is nothing to learn, it is 'just' gardening. But as an 'outsider' I would argue this is not the case. For example Chinese gardens are so distinctive. I'm not the first person that felt this. For example FH King visited the far east in 1910 and found that vegetable gardening was the most complex and developed in China. He was blown away by the difference to American farming. He noted that everything was recycled, nothing was thrown away, ash, bone, manures, human waste, old crop residue, building material from houses... everything had a second use in soil building. Soil building was a massive effort and required the most labor, and there were multiple ways of making compost and liquid manures. Many crops were harvested young, and eaten in an immature form, as it increased productivity. I can also see there is a lot of stacking in Chinese vegetable gardens. Farms in America, and Europe just do not make such intense use of trellises and intercropping. There were hundreds of differences to the American way which produced the dust bowl, and we are heading the way of the dust bowl again, but this time it will be dust - earth. Ancient Asian farming techniques could save the world from starvation. I learned doing soil advocacy at Kiss the Ground that 4 tons per hectare of soil are lost nearly everywhere in the world. But in FH King's book one can see that more than that was put back in the soil in organic matter every year, hence the ability to farm the same soil for thousands of years. I realized that permaculture has taken a LOT from Chinese gardening. I mean the old traditional kind, because modern Chinese horticulture is 'space age' with multistory greenhouses using hydroponics and aeroponics so it has become something else that you can't really do without a lot of technology. You are literally the only person in the world I have come across in four years of gardening research for my website greenidiom.com who is in the right kind of space to answer this question about Asian gardening.

Bluegrass Arts Anne ..Same here. I’m in zone 5, so I started my bush beans in my regular garden in May, and they’re starting to produce now, but I’ve learned so much about cattle panels this Summer that I had no idea about, that I had to try it..lol Luckily, I have two 4x12 raised beds, and I only had one planted this year, because I made my in ground garden so much bigger. So we just got home our 16 foot cattle panel tonight, and I’ll be planting that raised bed with purple and green yard beans tomorrow. Fingers crossed 🤞 that I can pull this off before the first freeze up here..lol But I’m excited!! :)
@kentnorman52984 жыл бұрын
Cattle and feed panels will certainly work as a trellis, but it is a real pain to get the old vines off of them at the end of the season. Using the bar and twine makes it super easy to take down the vines, and you can then just throw them in the compost bin. Thanks for watching and commenting on our channel. AsianGarden2Table.com

I have my long beans situated to grow up a 7’ handmade bamboo structure. I have put jute string over the top Bamboo pipe to each plant so they can climb the string. There is no other horizontal pole midway down like yours. There is a wide center dirt area to walk under to harvest both sides and cultivate soil. Basically a triangle to walk through. Will this be sufficient? They will basically grow up vertically to the top . I wish I could show a picture.

Hi, Great video as always. I have been growing the yard long bean here on the Gold Coast, Australia. We love them, have frozen the excess. We went on holiday while they were still producing, so now we have an excess of dried seed. Do you use the dried seed in cooking? Have too much dried seed for next year crop, so would like to use them in cooking if possible. Appreciate your help in advance, thank you.

My beans are under attack from insects that suck the sap. We call them thrips. I am in UK. After watching your video I did some heavy pruning, probably removed half of the biomass and cut out infected areas. I left the healthy leaves. Four hours later I noticed hundreds of thrips gathering on two or three large healthy leaves, so I cut those as well and put them in a sealed container. I don't know how this experiment will turn out. Do you have any advice for dealing with sap-sucking insects?

aloha sista how you and da family stay fine I hope, hey sista if you go to home depot , in the concrete area, there are some mesh wire 6×6 square holes, around3'× 7' its for concrete to put inside the form wen dey pore the cement in to the form to prevent it from cracking, I use the whole piece but I cut some top wire to bend and hole the whole thing to the tent frame I use 2 of them, I hang one then I hang the other on the tops bottom, after I cut and bend some top wire to connect them both so they can hang together, its easier than tieing all those string every time you plant a vine, its just a suggestion I will send you a picture of my set up if its possible

3-28-17 hey sista i forgot to mention that its light gauge and easy to carry and put up, you need a wire cutter cause regular pliers wont do it, a hack saw can, metal cuttter ect, well I hope it will work to your benifit cause you sure tie a lot of string lol lol no string invloved aloha from oahu hawaii friends always george and danyelle
