I had no idea I could plant them that close if they were on a trellis! And I’ve been gardening a loooong time. And belly button down! I actually planted my pole beans after watching this video and In my head I was telling the beans “there you go, belly button down nice and cozy”. I know, I talk to my plants. Thank you for a really informative video!

I just discovered you Susan and glad I did. I Love vegetable gardening, I live on a farm and ranch and have been growing veges for 50 years. Of course in the beginning I was a complete novice. But with the help of a few books I was on my way. Of course, we ate the produce and I canned and froze lots of it !!!! But my main joy is the wonders of nature, planting a seed and watching it grow into a plant that produces food that sustains us. I struggle with mobility issues but I have a new daughter in law who loves to garden and I am teaching her everything I know but there are always new thing to learn !!!!!!

I use a metal dinner fork to pop out plugs or from 72 inserts. This works much better than a smaller stick. It also allows you to pop the complete plug out every time. A fork is also slightly curved.

that helps but seeds will find their way to do what they do. Even if you plant a seed upside down, the roots will grow down and the stem will grow up. However, whenever I'm not sure, I plant it sideways!

I started to germinate bean seeds between paper towels about 40 years ago, when they germinate and have a root of about 1/2" I put them in the ground, I have never lost any beans because of the orientation of their belly buttons. In fact it might be better to plant them with their belly buttons up since the root will go naturally downwards around the seed, straighten out, then push the leaf part of the seed upwards. I started germinating beans inside because birds were digging them up. It also gives me a 2 week start. I use a high sphagnum moss mix to prevent damping off. A finely-milled sphagnum moss is a great idea. A good starter is really important when starting tomatoes when talking about damping off. Over watering is one of the causes of damping off. Letting the surface dry before watering and watering from the bottom help prevent damping off.

I learned a few tips with getting the plants at a young stage acclimated or they will get sunburn. In Guam, we also struggle with snails and so I would leave the young plants elevated till they’re about a foot long or more Otherwise they’ll get eaten and then transplant them in a container.

Hi, LaKay. It's nice to meet you. This is certainly an unusual tip but I learned it years ago from a highly-respected soil scientist/plant pathologist. As soon as I started paying attention to the orientation of the seeds at planting time, the germination rates skyrocketed! Have a great garden this year.

Great comments on beans and from the other video on peas. Your short growing season is very similar to upstate New York. Yesterday was one of the coldest days with snow showers. That's a good reason to start beans indoors and be ready to plant when chance of frost is past.

I'm sure sorry you've had some horrendous weather. That can be so discouraging in the spring when we gardeners are all dying to play in the dirt! And I agree that's a great reason for starting the beans ahead of time. Hope your weather improves soon.
