that helps but seeds will find their way to do what they do. Even if you plant a seed upside down, the roots will grow down and the stem will grow up. However, whenever I'm not sure, I plant it sideways!

I just discovered you Susan and glad I did. I Love vegetable gardening, I live on a farm and ranch and have been growing veges for 50 years. Of course in the beginning I was a complete novice. But with the help of a few books I was on my way. Of course, we ate the produce and I canned and froze lots of it !!!! But my main joy is the wonders of nature, planting a seed and watching it grow into a plant that produces food that sustains us. I struggle with mobility issues but I have a new daughter in law who loves to garden and I am teaching her everything I know but there are always new thing to learn !!!!!!

Hi, Patty. Thanks for subscribing! You can plant the seedlings on either side. But I've found that seedlings tend to lean toward the south when growing, so I've been trying to remember to plant the seedlings on the north side of the trellis (in each bed) so they'll grow toward the trellis.

I started to germinate bean seeds between paper towels about 40 years ago, when they germinate and have a root of about 1/2" I put them in the ground, I have never lost any beans because of the orientation of their belly buttons. In fact it might be better to plant them with their belly buttons up since the root will go naturally downwards around the seed, straighten out, then push the leaf part of the seed upwards. I started germinating beans inside because birds were digging them up. It also gives me a 2 week start. I use a high sphagnum moss mix to prevent damping off. A finely-milled sphagnum moss is a great idea. A good starter is really important when starting tomatoes when talking about damping off. Over watering is one of the causes of damping off. Letting the surface dry before watering and watering from the bottom help prevent damping off.
