In this video I'll disassemble a Coleman 400b single burner camp stove. The techniques that I share in this video can be useful for other stove models as well. Coleman models 508 and 533 are almost identical. If you have an Exponent model 550 please look for my video on that one. Thanks! Enjoy!

Just want to say a big thank you for this video. I really like old Coleman stoves but they are really hard to get here on the other side of the pond. I finally managed to score a 400A in a decent condition and at a logical price the other day and by following the steps in your video I disassembled it, identified and repaired the defects, removed the rust and now it's running smoothly. Thank you for your help, you made me very happy!

Thanks for the excellent information. My 400B is +30 years old and I've only had to keep the pump oiled correctly. IMHO, always using clean fuel, filtering it when filling, helps keep everything running smoothly.

My 533 has not been working for a while. I had just watched Coleman's video showing how to change the generator. I was about to order a new one, and then I thought it was too silly not to try to clean it. A few hours ago, I decided to take it apart and that's where I would have needed your video. I was afraid of having made a mistake by completely removing the small steel wire which really did not slide at all. Finally I managed to put everything together, but I was not completely serene. Now that I saw your video, I am reassured, and I think that I will soon disassemble it again to better clean it because even if now it works, and I am very happy of that, it makes a lot of yellow flames and soot. Thank you for this really useful tutorial.

Thanks for your response. This 400 generator does not have the removable nozzle as some do, as you mentioned in your video. I have sprayed brake cleaner into generator tube with the fine red tube , let sit for a short time and blew out with compressed air. Generator wire is difficult to insert, so I feel cleaning is required. What other chemicals may be used

Very helpful. Do you have to replace O rings much? I have a 533 that was NOS and works but due to age might need them replaced. Is the 550 b much lighter with the aluminum tank? I like the 533 but mostly use a Trangia or Caldera Cone for hiking now.

Hello, I love your show. I watch it all the time, I recently purchased a Coleman peak, one model 400 stove I for the life of me cannot find a generator for it. What’s happening is the little black handle that goes back left and right from clean to light leaks down near where the handle is, I don’t have a way of re-packing it. Do you have any suggestions where to get a generator cause it’s a great stove I had it running but then I noticed it. Flame was kind of coming down where the handle is.

My stoves that are built for Coleman fuel all burn low octane gasoline. There's a slight risk doing this however because it can lead to cleaning/replacing generator faster than if using Coleman fuel.

The valve lever position spring puts a side load on the oring, the 5/32 IDx 9/32" OD x 1/16'' oring works fine, but after sitting unused in the "clipped" position, the oring deforms and causes fuel leakage. Replacing the oring with a fresh one resolves the leak, so I store my stove (long term) in the unclipped position.

I have the same stove. Getting fire ignition in between the large bowl and inner bowl. Need to take it apart I already tried resending the bracket that holds the generator into the box. It's got to be a seal issue between the bottom of the base (first part on the fondt) and the large bowl or somewhere in there. Thought I saw a video but can't find it

Great assembly / disassembly video. Would this process apply to a coleman 533 dual fuel stove? I have one and wanted to clean everything inside out. Looks to me that the only difference between this model and the 533 is the pump and the fuel tank but the top assembly is almost the same... or not? Thanks!

I tore into one of my Coleman single burners today (a Peak 1, similar to the Feather 400), and after a full disassembly/reassembly, I found that I need a new check valve and air stem. The current one has stripped threads. While searching for replacement parts I discovered a tool on Ebay that's made specifically for the job, so I don't have to risk a screwdriver mistake. Everything should arrive in a week or so.

Thank-you so much for your quick reply. You're not kidding when you mentioned the valve is difficult to break free. I did try [before asking you] to back off the valve as you recommended but stopped because of not being sure of the procedure. I did figure there was a stuck steel ball in the open position as I was getting back-pressure on the pump so in the interim I removed the needle and put a couple of drops of Penetrant Oil in the valve, let it sit for 20 minutes and then with the screwdriver and hammer I gave the valve a sharp whack. The ball freed up and the check valve seems to be working fine, for now. If it acts up again and with your info I now feel confident that I can remove the valve. I've located a Coleman dealer here in Montreal where I will be able to pick-up a new kit. A video from you would also be greatly appreciated. Again, thank-you!!
