Your timing is impeccable. My 1999 996 C4 engine blew on Wednesday. Pulled the oil filter and sump yesterday to discover the oil looked like brown Goldschlager. Spent last two days searching for information to help me decide what course of action to take (rebuild, replace, cut bait) and just today found and binge-watched every episode you've posted. Whether I decide to tackle it myself or not, will be following closely. Amazing that cars this "old" don't already have a quality guide like you're creating. PLEASE keep it up; great work so far. A request: please provide some details on costs/sourcing as you go (not the Harbor Freight stuff... the special tools and Porsche parts).

Hello David, In the back of my mind I am always making these videos for people like you. I would have killed for more information before I started to dig in, never mind all the misinformation that wasted time and energy. In this week's description, I did include a link to the actual special tools I purchased (the Large Plastic Blue Case). So far I have spent very little on special tools besides the scissor lift. I do plan on giving a rundown of the nitty-gritty as I start buying things to put it back together. Good with your project, thank you for watching 🤘😎

I came it across it yesterday, not a lot of views but some good detail on technical aspects of rebuilding the crank and heads... can't vouch for the content but appears to be knowledgable.

Hello and thanks for your videos. You are making history here on KZbin. As far as I am concerned, you are the first one documenting this work. One question: Can I remove the valve covers and camshafts while the engine is still in the car? I think I should replace the tension pads on the camshaft tensioner. Thanks a lot for your advice. Hello Tom, The girls will be back, they may be bringing some of their friends 😉 Previous to this I had done the occasional Oil change and some brake pads when I was younger, never anything even remotely as crazy as rebuilding a Porsche Engine. I really just wanted to see if I could do it. Last summer the rear differential broke in our Family SUV, I took it to the dealer and they made screw up after screw up including sending the new differential to a different state! It ended up taking so long that I had them give back the truck and send the part to my house, I put it in that weekend and that made me think that perhaps I could try something more challenging, then the Porsche came up on craigs list and that was it. I really hope other people will realize they can do it too, its a bit scary and frustrating at times but also very interesting and enjoyable. I had so many questions for years about the names of parts and how engines really worked, it has been great for the gear head part of me. @@ManinaGarage Thanks for the explanation - bummer about your truck though. A guy has to be very careful about choice of repair shop for sure! I wouldn't mind seeing a video tour of your shop and tools some time. It has been kind of hard to tell exactly what kind of a space you have to work in. Have you been following the "997 Dad" videos? He seems to have a similar setup. You guys are my heros!

@@aboyandhisdog That was the service department of the Main dealer for my brand of truck, I kind of expected that they would do an amazing job! I was wrong..... If you real want to see the tiny garage, I’m happy to show you, I feel that might be a short tour 🤣 tool wise the majority of everything is a set of metric wrenches and sockets from 6 mm up to 32 mm (some gaps) I only recently got the electric socket wrench. My tools are pretty basic, not fancy by any means.

I recently found some sludge in my coolant hose wall. My mechanic told me that possibly, oil from the engine get mixed into the coolant. I am looking through this video over and over again trying to figure out at which part there could be a potential point where engine oils gets into the path of the coolant. Are there any coolant travelling into the cylinder head? If they do, at which point does the coolant flow from the cylinder block to the cylinder head?

Hello Daniel, just to be up front with you, i am not a mechanic. There are probably multiple ways that water and oil could mix in these engines. I would look at your cylinder head gaskets and your AoS system based on what I have learned making these videos. Thank you for watching 🤘😎

Is there no removal sequence for the valve cover/camshaft cover fastener and especially the cyl. head? Never removed the 996 head but for the most part, when removing camshaft journals (which in this case would double as the cam cover) and the cyl. head, you should remove the bolts from the outside and work your way toward the center. This prevents warpage. Also, when fastening, work from center and work your way out, this will prevent binding. Not sure about this engine, but it may be worth looking into. Of course, your service manual would have for sure mentioned this if it was important. Thanks for the vids, glad you found the issue.

Hello ae86, the Porsche special tool “cam supports” take the pressure off the cam cover. When I didn’t have the cam support I did remove the bolts in a pattern to reduce strain. Having done it both ways I would say that at least in the case of this engine there was not enough pressure anywhere in the system to warp anything, lots of fuss over something that turned out to be a non issue. As I mentioned last week, there any many professional engine builders that do not use the cam support on these engines. Thank you for watching. 🤘😎

Look's like may be no damage to bottom end, are you going to go ahead a split the case anyway? I don't know what would be the best advice on that

Hello Don, I feel it would be possible to just replace the VarioCam pads and put it all back together, I’m not sure I could live with myself. I intend on opening it all up and replacing the big end bearings and the rings. From what I have read, that pretty much gives me a new engine. I’ll either fix it or break it, it could go either way at this stage. 🤞. Thank you for watching. 🤘😎

Hello Toronto Jay, Good question. That is one of the reasons that I’m opening the crankcase up, those bits may have blocked an oil passage or something else that I cannot comprehend. Thank you for watching 🤘😎

I'm totally surprised: the plasic guides already caused damages to the P 944 S+S2 camshafts...P didn't "learned" from their mistakes in past...

Hello Rene, yes you are absolutely right, the Cam Pads seem to have been a known design fault for a solid decade prior to this cars manufacture.

Using the hammers to remove the pump can damage the mating surface of the pump. Same for the headcover. Please be careful with that.
