In this video, i show you a a how-to guideline to cleaning and re-grease your primary CVT clutch on a 2008-2012 Yamaha rhino 700 EFI. This CVT clutch is also used in other Yamaha models such as the Grizzly and Kodiak.

just a note, but make sure you push the cam plate all the way down and hold it in while installing clutch or weights can fall out of tracks and you have to start all over

Very good point. The inner slider sleeve was resting on the bench so the cam plate didnt fall fully into place. Good advice, thanks.

FYI. The grease on the rollers has zero lubricating purpose. It's strictly for noise surpression. Hense the reason most guys eventually go greaseless. The OEM roller weights are self lubricating plastic covers.

Thanks for the help; a slight [didn't seem needed] adjustment made all the difference. New Question: 2008 Rhino 700. Regarding Gear Oil fills & 0.xx L: is a fraction of a Liter critical? Is filling acceptable until the gear oil flows out of the fill/seal port?

Thats all thats needed. Fill untill it flows out the check plug or fill cap for the front.

I'd really like to know where you got the oil seal driver that is shown in the background a few times. About to swap my wet clutch drum housing and will be replacing the oil seal.

That is just a cheap seal driver i picked up at Princess Auto (Canadian version of Tractor Supply) Any NAPA, O-Rileys, Car Quest, etc.. will have those.

@@ruyguy8888 Thank you so much! Am I correct in assuming it fits completely over the shaft that drives the primary clutch assembly? Trying to set that seal flat and flush with a shaft in the way has proved difficult in the past.

If you are experiencing a inconsistent take off from a stop (as in your RPM's are never consistent before your machine starts to move, you may have a sticking set of rollers or worn sliders not allowing the pressure plate to move in or out smoothly. This will also restrict your top speed from a little to a lot. You may find you are high on the RPMs but you are simply not going the speed you should be. A bad sheave surface will cause excess heat and wear in your belt. Only way to tell this is really to inspect it for grooves or notches on the surface. A bad surface could also be cracked and feel out of balance. Like a vibration that is consistent to your engine rpms

I just changed my oil in a 450 Grizzly. I took it out for a 1/4 mile ride. I then realized I used auto synthetic. What should I do now? Can I just change the oil with Yamalube, or do I need to flush it.

that little bit of ride time wont hurt anything, I'd throw a new filter in there to be extra sure, but just go ahead and drain and refill. No Need to flush.

Question. When stopped, my Rhino only finishes a shift into H, L, or R after a slight tap on the fuel pedal. A notable clunk is heard as it 'drops into gear'. Is this likely a primary CVT clutch issue or something else, if something else, please comment.

That one i haven't actually heard of before. If your shift linkages are adjusted correcty on the shiter to transmission , then i would say the internal shift fork inside the transmission may be starting to go. The primary doesnt enguage the transmission until the secondary spins. But if you in-between shifts because of a linkage or bent shift fork then spinning the secondary to align the transmission gears is what you are hearing.

Seems like i have to clean and replace the ultramatic grease on the primary sheeve every couple of weeks. Any thoughts? 2006 yamaha 450 wolverine.

bad seal on the case cover perhaps? letting water/dirt in? The other thing i would look at would be the sliders to make sure they are not causing the sticking you may may be experiencing.

Any suggestions for me? My rhino doesn’t want to go when I step on gas and it revs high then slowly starts to go. When it gets to higher speeds I feel it act normal. I was towing a heavy trailer. Thinking it’s something with clutch but not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Your primary Sheve sounds like its stuck or dry. I'd suggest first pulling the clutch cover off, taking your primary clutch apart, clean re-grease first. Then look at your secondary clutch spring to make sure its not cracked or broken. Either way, your going to have to pull both clutches out and inspect

Ok so I cleaned both clutches and inspected. Nothing looks wrong. Still doesn’t want to go. I tried going with the cover off to see the clutch work but it’s like it’s stuck in mud and doesn’t want to turn easily. I hope it’s not the transmission. Ugh. Anything else to check?

Also in neutral it doesn’t spin easily. It wants to spin but barely.

Sounds like it could be wet clutch. Does oil smell burned?

I've rebuilt a few of these clutches. Once the cover goes on the primary it prevents the grease from slinging inside the case. It needs the amount i placed in there to lubricate the rollers and sliders. If you have a proper amount of grease to measure out, post it here and i will pin the comment. To date. this rhino is still in service and working well as a work and recreation vehicle.
