Finally! BEST explanation ever. Now is your turn Ford. Yes they should explain who was the engineer who came out with this absurd way of releasing the pipes of a fuel pump module. Is like let's make it hard for people so they would break them apart when they try to replace their pumps. The red line seems the hardest one. Mechanics usually break that one even when using not too much force .

thumbs up for you Mister tedjar! You're right, no one goes into detail about the spring in clips on the lower collar. in fact most of the video's i have seen they break the collars off.

I loved this video! Helped me out a lot. I'm working on a 99 Mercury Cougar and I had that problem that I couldn't seem to disconnect the fuel line from the pump. Thanks!

For some reason, our 1999 Mercury Mystique had a 5 inch diameter hole above the 6 inch diameter pump lid and lock ring. I literally had to trace a 6" hole and make little snip cuts and bend the tabs back. I did not have the time, tools and energy to drop the gas tank. After changing the pump (and thank you for your advise), I bent the tabs back down and caulked in the snip cuts with silicone. The rubber lid would not stay in place so I used a couple of strips of duct tape to secure it. Crazy.

Earlier Contours used a small pump housing. Ford did not make a bigger hole in the sheet metal for the later contours. Dont even think about dropping the tank, impossible without removing entire rear axle. If you try. a good chance you will crack fuel tank plastic inlet.

This is a major issue. Those cruddy rings dont work, they break. I have a 1998 with 80,000 miles. The plastic is rotten on these clip rings, after they broke off without being able to remove the lines, I tried lifting up the catch the rings are supposed to lift, which also broke,. Even after somewhat lifting them, the nylon 90 degree inserts refused to budge, gasohol has swollen them and they dont release. So cut them off. AND you have to take a chisel and cut a huge hole cutting the sheet metal to be able to remove the pump housing. So rather then spend fortune on a new pump and new Ford fittings that you can no longer buy. I drilled out the broke plastic 90's from pump housing, then dug out the orings and snapped off the plastic white and red undue ring surrounds to get to the bare black housing. Then I tapped with 1/8 NPT thread the remaining black pump housing, went to H Depot, bought some 90's brass 1/8 and some close. Soldered close to the 90's. Will seal with Seal ALL from Eclectic products. Then of course FORD placed them too close, so had to grind one 90 back to clear other 90 then retap the brass 90 used for the return line. On the ends of the brass 90's, screwing in brass barbed hose ends. And run rubber fuel line to the Nylon tubes after clipping off only the end of the FORD nylon inserts leaving the ends of the Ford 90's nylon inserts still in the nylon tube. A couple clamps will hold the rubber line, just slide it on good and far and clamp twice with one clamp past whats left of the FORD nylon insert. ALternatively, could drill entirely the black plastic in the housing enough to slide rubber fuel line direct to the electric pump inside the housing keeping drilled hole tight to rubber fuel line to form a seal, and have to do that for the return line also.. Its like these Contours are throwaways cars. How many people would spend over $500 to fix their Ford fuel pumps. My cost is $20 for pump on Amazon, and $15 in parts, plus some know how to get it done.

This was very, very helpful. However, my fuel pump was replaced in the past and the collar with the tabs was not reinstalled by the shop that did the repair. Any idea then how to get the fuel line out?
