@Darius Kang "descendants of immigrants from Europe who came to America and turned the mosquito and snake infested wilderness into a modern, prosperous country" - Eh, then that would only apply to British colonials, not general "Europeans". Especially since there is not such thing a unique and singular "European" culture, group, or people. I don't remember Estonians or Poles "creating" America when they arrived in like the early 1900s. Secondly, seeing as that would only apply to British colonials, then that definition doesn't apply to the majority of Americans. Thirdly, also seeing as how the US white population is dwindling, then the perceptive norm would change as minorities become the majority.
@MMAmachinhead925 жыл бұрын
@Darius Kang "Utter nonsense! The various people who live in Europe have more in common among them culturally, group-wise and a people " - Um, how? Do they speak the same language? Have the same religious values? Same 'cultural' values? Same cuisine? Last time I checked - no. A liberal Swede with secular 'values' has very little in common with a conservative Russian with Orthodox 'values', don't you think? "Many Europeans from various countries fought in the American Revolution - The majority of Revolutionary soldiers had origins from the British Isles, African slaves, or France. "Yes. Because of uncontrolled immigration invasion by non-European peoples" - LOL, so you're a believer the "White Genocide"? Ok, then, I'd rather have your "muh white genocide" then Apartheid. Get used to it by now.
@MMAmachinhead925 жыл бұрын
@Darius Kang "They have more in common with each other than the Swede has in common with say a liberal Indian or the Russian has with a conservative Arab" - Yeah, how? Last time I checked, being gay is now outlawed in both Russia and Saudi Arabia, while liberals in India and Sweden both support equal rights. So...fail. "If the only way to stop white genocide is by walls, Apartheid and herding people like you into prison camps then walls, Apartheid and prison camps will happen" - Are you Nazi-LARPing your "Camp of Saints" wet dream fantasies? You really believe that these drunk, 70 year old Stormfucks are going to start their "muh civil war 2: electric bugaloo"? Ha, well, keep on hoping that'll happen. In the meanwhile, I'm doing good old Uncle Georgey Soros dream of committing 'muh white genocide" by miscegenating the white races. Our dream will live on.

simply.s I think you misread why a number of Americans feel they don't have an accent. The Americans whom believe this don't think American English is the proper standard, above all others. They think American English is the most basic accent, the most generic, the least dynamic. I suspect they feel that if English speaking humans were pressed on an assembly line....their generic, factory language would be general American English...and that you would have to buy upgrade packages to sound like one of the English, Scottish, Aussie, South African etc,etc accents. I don't think any Americans think they have a superior accent. Americans don't tend to think about accents at all, but when they do, they tend to conclude that American English is the most basic, generic, cheap version of spoken English. People of the world (when not traveling) tend to experience much of other people/accents through entertainment and such. The US is abnormally insulated, because it is swallowed by American content, media, entertainment. We simply don't hear many non-American accents, because it's difficult for foreign entertainment to break through in America on account of how big/pervasive the American entertainment industry is. The only nation that really gets anything through is basically England...we see the odd English entertainer speaking somewhere, or something on BBCA, or Downtown Abby or whatever. This is probably why (also probably why Americans think everyone there has posh accents, from the shows we watch) a number of Americans accuse anyone speaking English in a non-American accent as being "British" (and 95% of the time when they say British, they just mean England), because that is the only foreign content that reaches us. South African, Kiwi, Aussie, Irish, Zimbabwean, Namibian, Swede speaking English...whatever...some Americans will say "Love your British accent!" in response. Americans don't really get exposed to many other peoples in popular media. It's all foreign and unfamiliar to us. Japan and China are kind of insular in a comparable way to the US. The US is to them what the "british" is to Americans. Everything foreign/English speaking is probably American in their mind.
@simplyshama9 жыл бұрын
Dane Potmo Thanks for your explanation. It still doesn't make the response "I don't have an accent" any better though :) I always find myself saying, yes you do - just like I have an accent - you have one too. An American accent is an accent nonetheless. It only adds to the image that America thinks they're the centre of the world. Like how you guys have a World series with only American teams , in sports played only by Americans. How does that deserve the "world" title!?
@danepotmo25139 жыл бұрын
simply.s I don't agree Americans see themselves as the center of the world. Americans see themselves as off in their own world(a world no better or worse than someone else's world), and assume everyone else is also off in their own world too. If the US was genuinely so up its ass in relation to other nations, I can't think it would so openly, clearly, prefer the accents of other peoples to our own. People that genuinely feel superior to others don't tend to reject their own thing, and fetishize the things of another. I think you're English right, or Scottish?? if you talked to any American Boy, what would he say?? "I looooove your accent!", basically like clockwork. American women are far worse. If I were an ugly Englishman whom couldn't get laid? I'd pack a suitcase full of condoms and vacation in the US, because on just accent alone, he's going to get laid. Anyway....I am a huge baseball fan. I will do my best to not get annoyed, be a dick about this,,,but no promises. I assume you know nothing of baseball's history in the US? Baseball is very important to Americans. It represents continuity here because of how unchanged it has been. The top league MLB, consists of two leagues, the NL which has been in continuous operation since 1876, and the AL which has been in continuous operation since 1901.The first World Series, which was played between those leagues, was played in 1903. From 1903 though today, the World Series has been played in every single year except 1904 and 1994. The 16 franchises in the leagues which played in 1901 still exist, within league. No contractions, no relegations. A straight line. That 1903 World Series was called a world series, because that's what people did at that time to sell events. Things like the "World's Fair", or every carnival show that professed to have the "world's tallest man". It is simply a wording of its time meant to draw crowds. And, think about that time. There is no concept of globalization...there is no UN, no League of Nations, internet, commercial flights, television....nothing that links the world. It was called "World Series" from the onset, from 1903. The US wasn't very well going to change the name of the biggest event of a culturally important sport on account of people from nations whom don't care at all for baseball finding it "Arrogant" 110+ years after the fact. No nation would I doubt Because you don't care for baseball, you probably don't get how important of an institution it is in America. If you did get it, I doubt you'd have a problem with the US naming the event the "World Series" 112 years ago. Do you think the US should rename a cherished institution in its nation on account of people from foreign nations, whom don't care for baseball at all, having a problem with it 112 years later? This is what I mean by America not thinking it's the center of the world, but is off in its own world. An American cannot fathom why anyone might care that 112 years ago we called a special event the World Series, and don't feel like changing it now to accommodate people whom care zero for baseball entirely. Moreover, Americans are completely indifferent to what championships are called in the sports/nations others play...because we respectfully think of them in their own world as well. If Indians want to call their cricket championship events "Galaxy Champs", an American wouldn't care or notice. Whatever soccer or rugby titles are called? Americans don't notice. It's not arrogance or a sense of superiority that drives anything we do. We like doing our own thing, hope others do as well. There is no malice in anything towards other nations in things like "world series". It was never created to insult or mitigate anyone owning to its 1903 context. I am genuinely perplexed why 112 years after the fact it has become some sort of rallying cry for people to insult America, as if the US is assholes for not recognizing in 1903 that 112 years later the world would be infinitely more integrated and global.
@simplyshama9 жыл бұрын
Dane Potmo I never said America should change the name. I just wondered why it had that name when there's nothing Worldly about it! Thanks for explaining :) I get it now. America is ignorant to the culture of others because all they're surrounded by is their own culture. Whereas abroad we're exposed to our own culture, American culture, and the culture of the countries that surround us. Which, if you live in Africa, Asia or Europe, is pretty easy as other countries are so close by. In America that's not the case, you'd have to travel long distances to explore a culture completely different to your own, where as I could pop on a two-hour flight or get on a train. In some places I'd only need to ride a bike to cross borders.

one can recognize an American from far away, when one can hear and understand (if one speaks American) from far away. They wear their night clothes to go out and they don’t even try to understand what other countries customs are or what they wear in public etc. And yes, they seem to own the world, no matter where they are. But, they are giving, friendly and open minded and that is something the Europeans can not always say for themselves. But yes, they don’t need umbrellas, because it does not matter if their clothes get wet. Europeans wear nice clothes to go somewhere and it does matter if their clothes get wet. +SuzakuX No it's really not. It's a perfectly reasonable explanation. The "quiet/polite" Americans wouldn't be noticed as much by the natives of that country. I've lived everywhere but the far east and nobody experiences freedom like America. More importantly, what all these people are describing is prosperity. True freedom brings about prosperity, abundance. I spent half my life defending that prosperity, and not necessarily through war, that's not all the military does, so as I listened to these people describe us I realized how far we are from the America I grew up with. That leads to my second reason. To whom much is given, much is required, we used to live and die by that but it seems we've forgotten how we got here. It's all going away. America is falling just like the Roman empire fell, and for the same reasons. We can't seem to figure out the war or opponent we're fighting now. Ourselves.

@@bluewuppo I would say, not in general (especially compared with other Asian countries). However, the older people stare REALLY hard at you sometimes, and it can be a bit annoying. You can either try to ignore it or stare back. If you have black hair though, Koreans always want to touch it, which I think is pretty awkward. I love Korea in general, very friendly people, safe streets, and great food. It's a great place to live and work, especially if you have children, they tend to be very kid oriented and friendly.

This video just shows me that almost if not all countries have stereotypes about other places. It's just how they were raised and what they see. To them they see the commercials, movies, reality shows that show the comments that they made. In America we have stereotypes about other countries that go based on what we see so when I read the comments left below, I get a little mad. The video was funny to me because while not every American is like that, we are very diverse country.
