Your cabinetry and finish work is beautiful and your video production work is surprisingly just as good. Very nicely done and so professional! I found your video as I was looking at ways of refining the distressing techniques I've been experimenting with on the cabinetry of my 1870s-vintage houses...which are often happily pre-distressed, so the painting, sanding and staining will be great for highlighting the wear and tear marks of the last 150 years. Where the wear doesn't exist, your tips and techniques for creating them are much appreciated.

I just now returned to your video to refresh myself on your technique in preparation for another house project. By the way, I did the work mentioned above on an old pine build-in wardrobe a couple of years ago -- used Webster green for the color coat -- and the finished result was stunning. Thanks for that!

Oh, the art of simulating randomness. It's no surprise there wasn't a sufficient class on it; something like that seems like it takes tons of practice to find the eye for balance in such a specific way. Really awesome work you do. Fantastic film work too. It really pulls me in.

Your videos are excellent! Very professionally made. This is the only video of this type on KZbin. I painted a pine coffee table all red. Unfortunately I painted it in semi gloss latex. I want to add more dimension to the top and have a more rustic look so will try your technique. I’m concerned the semi gloss is too slick to take the glaze like your cabinets. Can you recommend how I can achieve the look despite the semi gloss? I was thinking about giving the whole top a light sand.
@Fishcamp6 ай бұрын
Love it and great to hear. You will be fine with semi gloss, the only hang up is when you go to sand it it will ball up and clog the paper. No problem with the glaze adhering. Same technique and outcome. Good luck and enjoy it!

Thank you. We use a Sherwyn Williams hi build lacquer but you could use a poly or water based finish. Just experiment on sample boards to see which you like the best. Each finish step changes and that is part of the fun of it!

Love the work you are doing! Beautiful finishes. What clear coat are you using over your water based satin paints? I fear lacquer would lift the paint or interact poorly. Please share your methodology with us mere mortals.
@Fishcamp3 жыл бұрын
Thanks and yes, we use lacquer over most of our finishes but sometimes we use a tinted Briwax. The big thing is to make samples, always make samples so there are no surprises. Thanks again!

Yes, please let us know what type and color of satin paint and glaze you used. We’d like to do the same thing here in Texas.

John we are putting together another video on the process of yet another cabinet project. The paint is an Ace brand in Brick Red and the glaze is a Sherwyn Williams brand in Van Dyke Brown. Thanks for the feedback

Hi!! Absolutly beautiful!! We are planning on doing this technique inside our new home. What type of glaze? Does it have to be antiquing glaze or can it be minwax staining glaze? Any more tips would be appreciated.
@Fishcamp3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for writing and glad you enjoyed it! We use a gel stain so yes, minwax will work. Just make a bunch of samples, it’s amazing how paint colors will change with different glazes. Have fun and thanks again!

@@Fishcamp you mentioned in the video that latex paint was used. I plan to paint my kitchen cabinets using acrylic. Will this technique still work for distressing?
@Fishcamp2 жыл бұрын
Yes it will, same effect. Just experiment with samples to get it right.

What kind of glaze did you use? You mentioned glaze at the beginning but then as you were applying it said stain. Looks awesome and thanks for the tutorial!
@Fishcamp5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Rick and did notice that it was missing. We used a Sherwyn wiping stain on this which is a concentrated stain. We usually use a gel stain and really like the ease of use with that. How did you find us and are you a subscriber? If not we sure would appreciate it! Thanks for the question

Can you do this over Sherwin Williams Emerald urethane trim enamel paint in satin?
@Fishcamp9 ай бұрын
Definitely but we tend to like matte over satin because it doesn’t ball up as you sand it. It works just not as “dry” as matte. Again, just make samples and know what you’re getting into before committing.
@tammykeliin66409 ай бұрын
@@Fishcamp Ok I may not be sanding down to the wood anyways because I used a bonding primer and its almost impossible to sand thru it LOL . Whats the best product to use for the glaze? I tried Varathane gel stain on my samples and altho it worked fine, ir seems to get a bit sticky. Is there a water based product that may work better? Thank you!!
@bonjokin28102 жыл бұрын
Do you prime the wood first? Or just one coat paint, coat of stain then a coat of sealer? Thank you
@Fishcamp2 жыл бұрын
No priming unless you want an under color, which can be really cool but not here. Paint the raw wood, sand out the areas you want worn, stain/glaze and top coat with lacquer. Play with different colors of paint and stains, it’s amazing what subtle changes in colors can make dramatic results.
@bonjokin28102 жыл бұрын
@@Fishcamp Thank you for sharing these techniques. I can't wait to show them off.

Do you still prime and paint, then your doing the distressing then the glaze
@Fishcamp Жыл бұрын
No primer whatsoever unless you want another color as an undertone. Experiment with smaller pieces and enjoy the process!

Sorry to ask another question, you had said in another comment you used sherwin williams vandyke brown as your glaze, was that there bac wiping stain? In canada were limited i use there bac wiping stains as glazes because we don't have "glazes" in canada ,but i find the bac wiping stain takes 3 days to dry before i can top coat due to the low binding ingredients, but it has great playability just curious if your using another product i don't know about from sherwin, i see you use gel stains from old masters but they color the paint a bit dark unless you top coat and then apply, so i was just curious because your glaze in this video came off very well similer to a bac wiping stain does on just a painted surface.Just wasn't sure if you had issues with drying time, im always afraid of the wrinkle effects in my clear coat if my glaze isnt dry enough before my laquer, so I always wait 3 days before laquer, so just wondering what your take is on this, Thank you, you are definitely an idol of mine perfect execution alaways look forward to more videos.
@Fishcamp9 ай бұрын
Definitely the BAC, not sure why it’s taking three days to dry. Should wipe it off immediately after doing one area, say a door panel or something like that. In a well ventilated are you could probably re-coat in a couple hours. This is why we make samples so you don’t commit to a piece of furniture and unhappy with the outcome. Here’s the process- paint, distress, glaze, topcoat. Every piece will come out darker once you apply glazing so definitely make samples then duplicate.
