You, Sir, are a genius! I recently moved and took my chrome ball wall clock with me. On reinstall in my new place, I was OK with the 4 quadrants (12, 3, 6, & 9), but when it came to the minutes I completely forgot how I did it the first time. I do know it was a lot more complicated than your method, so I gave yours a try. Easy-peazy! Thanks so much!

Mathematically there is one major problem with this method. You started out with a big step already done - the horizontal and vertical demi-chords. While that will work, it depend on how accurately you draw them. So how did you accurately lay them out? One answer is to not even bother. Instead, simply use the compass to mark out the even hours, and then bisect one of the angles they create, say the 12 and 2pm angle to create the 1pm position on the diameter. From there, mark out the remaining odd hours. Doing it this way will ensure there is no error in the way you layed out the initial criss-cross which would make every other hour inherit the error. The key is to use a sharp pencil and accurately place the compass point in the center of the circle line.

It's not as easy as you think. I've tried 4 different times on a sheet of 10" x 10" paper, and can't get them lined up equally. I'm making a clock face, so this is a crucial part. This is spot on... it's the first 2 lines that are the issue - N-S, E-W. That has to be spot on. Take a piece of square paper, fold in half and half again. That should give me the N-S and E-W to get me going.

@@judykritikos2953 Take your combination square and find the center point and layout your cardinal points (12, 3, 6 and 9). Use your compass to draw your circle. Then starting at the intersection of the circle and 12 and three draw six arcs of the same radius as your circle. Or draw six Arcs stating at 12 and then bisect three of them drawing a straight line through the center. This isn't rocket science.
