I was able to find and order the Shopnotes magazine 115 showing how to build a router lathe. You can use a scrollsaw too. Just that it cuts a bit slower. Or you could look up my bandsaw plans and build your own bandsaw!

I've seen on other tutorials (specifically on using scroll saws) to use clear packing tape to help lubricate and prolong blade life (and it makes removing the pattern easier). You can also use a heat gun to make removing the pattern much easier! Thanks for the brilliant idea to use a drill for the inside part of the teeth! You just made my life soooo much easier!

I made your box joint tool and found everything working perfectly... The gear cutting files worked perfectly. I took the hpgl file into corel and exported as a .dxf to convert it. I then took it to VcarvePro and made the gears on my CNC. I used a tapered ball end bit to finish the inside taper... Love your stuff...

You are ridiculously intelligent. The things you build are just beyond my wood working talents. This gear project however, was explained so simply with such perfect step by step instructions, if I ever had a wooded box joint jig and needed a wooden gear, I feel pretty confident I could make one.

It almost seems KZbin posters get paid by the minute. Lately, many videos have titles that are outright lies, clickbait. I look at comments during the first minute. If there is a negative, I drop out.

I don't sacrifice function for thrift. I just buy when I come across a good deal. Most of my purchases weren't really necessary to begin with. I also like to demonstrate that you don't need the latest toy from Festool to do a good job.

I just slapped myself in the forehead when I saw you use a drill press to clean up the little spaces between the teeth "ahead of time". Lol I was making it WAY to difficult with all the twisting and turning I was doing on my band saw. How smart you are scares me a bit. Your demeanor is calm and quiet yet beneath that is a power I cannot comprehend. People we traditionally view as smart - loud, outspoken, good at polishing a perfect image, etc. - are usually in positions of power and are completely different than you. It scares me because the general public, and myself, might overlook your incredible intelligence when meeting you for the first time. What is mentally required to assemble what you assemble from start to finish, film it, edit it, and complete everything all the way is absolutely astonishing. Use baltic birch, or the finest plywood you can get. For cutting by hand - use a coping saw, and a lot of patience!

Definitely not. My drill press cost I think around $160. Before I got that one, I used one of those really small drill presses that can sometimes be had for as low as $45.

I've never made wooden gears but back when I was an industrial Maintenance Technician, I made metal gears by the paper template and bandsaw method. Sometimes a piece of machinery would break a gear tooth and it could take days to get a replacement. If it wasn't a really high speed or precision gear, or a helical or bevel, I could put it on a xerox machine and make a copy, (actually two copies so I could cut and paste around the broken teeth). Then I cut the teeth on a band saw and hand filed them so they ran smooth. We didn't have a milling machine or the cutters to mill them. The gears were nowhere near precise as the manufactured ones, but they only took a couple of hours to make and would last until replaceements arrived.

i have a project i am working on...it is related to a tricycle....as it stands..there are two chains on it. one from the pedal crank to a middle hub that has 3 internal gears....from this hub,there is another chain that goes to the final drive sprocket on the drive wheel.....i would like to replace the 1st chain with a drive shaft of sorts....i think this is possible because the sprocket on the pedal crank is basicly a big gear..... what do you think ? a drive shaft from the pedal crank to the internal gear hub ...feasible ?

What kind of plywood do you use? Where do you get it? At 3:35 when you are filing, the plywood appears to be equal to a solid wood. In fact, it almost appears petrified - almost stone-like. The plywood I use, such as Birch Plywood (NOT Baltic Birch - just plywood laminated with Birch) has actual wood fibers between each layer. My plywood seems much less compressed. It's so hard to explain what mine is, but to sum it up - my plywood is normal! LOL Yours isn't normal. Like I said, it is solid, stone-like and really has no texture in the different plys. What kind of plywood is that??? Thanks!!!

Amazing video! Just a small tip. Before gluing the template, you can use blue (or transparent) tape over the wood and then glue the template to the tape. To remove the template, just remove the tape. Clean and easy! And use a scroll saw, if you can. Those can be tilted by design ;)

Definitely not the program. Maybe your laser cutter. Laser printers can also distort a bit. Just print it with an ink jet printer.

Tip for drilling the holes: up the speed on your drill press! Initially I was using the lowest speed and it was tearing up the paper template and causing a lot of tearout on the backside. Using a higher speed dramatically improved my results.

I have had good luck with rubber cement to mount the paper. Some types (not all) peel right off when you are done. Experiment. I use a type i bought at Staples. Great video - amazing - nothing like wood! Lloyd New Hampshire USA

The bevel is just for the angle. Straight gears are straight.
