You two are absolutely making my first dahlia garden fun and so far a success. If not, I'll just have to "learn to live with it" and do my best next time.

Congratulations on making the best dividing video I have ever watched. It was completely informative while never being redundant or boring. You are succinct, yet you provide added nuances to the process that I and newer growers will find extremely helpful. Thanks for a great watch!

Thanks Geoff for a fantastic video. We are in autumn here in Syd Australia, so I'm about to start chopping mine down but I'll be watching this again in late September when spring comes around. Cheers

Thank you for doing this video. Everything is so easy to see and follow. My dahlias are big because I was afraid to divide them, now they’re too big for pots until I can plant them out after my last frost date, end of May. Your dahlias are beautiful!

Even at this stage you might find you can split them with gentle pressure.

Hello there im new to Daliah tubers i just wanted to ask you i just went and got some tubers from b & q can i divide the shop tubers i just got that are still in the original bags? or do i need to put them in pots just the way they and when they get some little shoots then divide them up? im just confused and dont want to do them the wrong way around and mess them up. as i cant afford to get lots of tubers i rather divide them up my self. so please do let me know so i can start them off. a fantastic video step by step instructions and big thank you to heather for doing all the hard work at the back doing camra work with out her we couldnt see this video. another thing do put any ferilizers for the daliahs? do they need any food?

Hi Aleshaa. Yes, it is possible to divide shop bought tubers. It’s best to get them growing in a bit of compost, but don’t cover them too much, you need to be able to see the shoots when they start to grow. Once they are obvious, it’s then okay to cut the tuber up, remembering that each shoot needs a piece of tuber to grow from until it starts to grow its own roots. See another of my videos for more details “Growing dahlias month by month episode 5: early April”. Yes, you need to feed your dahlias somehow. I use my own make compost, but it’s okay to use Growmore, or any other general fertiliser. Remember to keep them well watered once they are growing strongly. But don’t over water them when they are young plants, because the tuber can rot in standing water.

Helpful, thank you :)

After cutting, do you need the cut area to scar over or is it ok to immediately plant it?
@Dahliaholic Жыл бұрын
I immediately plant it. If the tuber was dormant, ie in Autumn, then I would let it heal over, but if it’s growing it should be ok to plant it straight away.
