When I was a kid growing up in rural Montana my Dad had an old '74 GMC pickup. The bench seat was shot. We had no money so he drove way out into the deep woods where there lived an old hermit who made money by selling all sorts of stuff that he had locked away in a bunch of old shipping containers. Dad bought a roll of super thick, heavy duty carpet. It was the type of carpet you would see in a gym or the entrance way of a public building. He reupholstered the seat with it. It looked great but the old man who sold him the carpet had let his goats shelter in the container with the carpet so his truck always had a slight goat smell after that. At first it was unpleasant. But I got used to it and now I'd love to be able to take another drive in that old goaty '74 pickup.

@@oldschoolautoupholstery Try letting it dry for a couple of minutes if you can. The only reason to not wait and instead put the parts together immediately is if you need to adjust the position of the parts. If you let it dry for a couple of minutes first it will stick at first contact and not let you reposition, but it wil adhere better.

Thanks for doing this video. What is so simple for you is NOT so for newbies. Here is what I learned in this 10 minute video (1) What density foam to use (2) Do not allow adhesive to tack up (and why), go ahead and assemble right away. (3) Use sew foam to cover over the repair area. If I had not watched this video, I would have guessed at the density, allowed the glue to tack up and would not have used the sew foam to cover the repair.

Anyone who tells you to not let the glue get tacky Before You Stick the foam together is wrong. I used to repair seats for a living and learned from a master of his craft who owned the business for decades. You always wait for the glue to get tacky Before You Stick two pieces of foam together no exceptions

I just did something similar to my BMW sport seats. The driver side outer bolster cushion was badly damaged from years of being rubbed on, I went to a craft store and purchased a nice piece of firm foam to replace it. Figuring out how to cut it was a bit of a challenge, but ultimately I shaped it with a small pneumatic sanding tool I have. It’s a small 2 inch disc that rotates at a very high speed. It shaved down the foam very nice, and allowed me to get the proffer shape and profile that was necessary before installing the new seat cover pieces. Seven sections to that seat, what a pain in the butt. I bought it from a company named L seat, I would have loved to use a local upholstery shop, but there isn’t really anything like that here where I live, such a shame, I love giving local businesses my money over big companies when I can.

I've learned how to do this years ago and repaired many seats, then i went fixing mine's but then realized i could buy a complete set of seats out of a brand new Audi they converted to RS look for 120 bucks, after that burning the old seats is the best way to fix them, and installing new ones by adapting the mounts on the chassis is way easier, unless you are fixing an antique or furnitures, so having this knowledge is well worth it.

Most of the times I didn't even cut out the "Cancer" you referred to. I would just saturate the damaged area with contact cement, let it dry and then spray the HD foam I was using for a patch. When glued together I then used my small sandpaper disk grinder and shaped the foam to match the original contour of the rest of the seat. Sometimes I'd put the scrim foam but most times I was able to match up the contour of the original foam well enough that it didn't need the additional quarter-inch scrim on it to smooth it out.

I have been gluing foam for sporting projects for almost 30 years. I have found closed cell you want to let it sit/get tacky. Open cell you can apply it wet. I figure this is because airflow still allows the foam to dry more easily.

Brother I think you missed the fact that the whole bolster is dilapidated, for that repair I would usually take the whole top half off and replace and reshape it, or add a piece like you did then top it with a soft 1" foam, tapper of the edges and let the 1" kind of self shape to the cover to get it back closer to its original shape. I would also pull the old foam backing off the factory cover where it is already damaged and add a layer to the foam to limit the chances of there being any ridges or bums created with the old stuff rolling or bunching up

So i glued in a piece, reshaped it and glued a piece of vinyl over top like a patch. All these gm truck seats seem to wear in the same spot. Now the cover can move without dragging back and forth over the foam.

I'm an upholsterer. What you did wasn't bad, but the way I do it is a bread knife, then finish shaping with an angle grinder with flap disk. You can get it pretty perfect without having any hard corners from cuts. Then spray with headliner glue, and top with dakron. You don't get so much extra pooch that way. Then recover and done. Also, I probably would wrap the seat bar with dakron before adding the foam so I didn't have a crush point where it was hollow under the foam

I used to do this for a living and you must wait for the glue to get tacky Before You Stick To Pieces of phone together or you're not doing it correctly and the seat will fail. You use an electric knife to cut the foam to shape then you use a die grinder to form it to mirror the other side. Do you use the much thinner phone to overlap the thick piece of foam you glue down and you cut every Edge at an angle and shave it down with the die grinder until it's perfect.
