How to DIY install or swap the RNS315 or RNS510 GPS with your RCD510 radio

I have a Sportwagen 2013 and did the swap out for an RNS-510. Without VAG-COM / VCDS the NAV unit works perfectly and the steering wheel controls do change the radio station and volume. VAG-COM / VCDS is needed to key the RNS-510 so that it shows up in the dash however and feeds the nav into it. If you want that, then you also need to physically disconnect the compass near the rear of the vehicle (it's velcro'd to the ceiling).

the stock radio in is actually the rcd-310. the 510 is the touchscreen w/out nav.

These Volkswagens and SEAT are extremely easy to work on. Just pull facial off and unscrew. Whereas Vauxhall or Mercedes are a pain in the ass.

Thanks for a very useful tutorial. Ive just started to fit an RNS510 to my Mk 6 Golf and managed to remove the old unit. The surrounding trim does need a strong pull to come free. I'm stuck with the vent panel. The 2 star screws are out but the panel refuses to come more than an inch free. Seems stuck along the top edge. Is there any other clip there? Your help would be much appreciated. David.

First, how do I find out what the radio code is to my new rns 315? second, In an unfortunate accident, i smashed the screen of my original rns 315 in my 2012 golf TDI.... :[ is it possible to just relace the screen or does the entire console have to be replaced? I think so. they all seem to use up the same space, and they fit in the same place, so it'll screw in just as the other radios. I myself am going to swap one of these (rcd 310) for an RCD510

I found your video trying to solve the problem of owning a U.S. Spec Tiguan in Europe. Everything I'm finding seems to say that it is not possible to get European maps loaded onto a U.S. Spec RNS-315 or RNS-510. It seems like you might know if that is really the case, and if so, is my only option then to swap out a Euro spec unit for my current U.S. one? Is that even possible? Thanks.

+Travis Hefley I'm about to replace my RNS315 with a RNS510, so I've been doing a lot of reading. From what I gather, you're correct. Unless your car already has bluetooth installed, you'll need to add it yourself. I don't have any links handy, but I know you can get the bluetooth part for a pretty decent price (~$100 think?). Not sure if the mic is included with the module. Sorry I can't be specific.

You will not need any coding if you dont have the multifuctional display + (MFA+). If you put a RNS 510 into your car it will work without coding. The only thing you will have to code is the navigation directions in the MFA+. (Talking about Golf 6)

If I were to buy a RCD510/RNS510 OEM off a car junkyard (found a few, and they can sell twice as cheap than eBay), will it still require the PIN during initial boot? What if they dont know it, I doubt they know it because they have a crashed car, and is unrepairable, can the PIN be cracked or smth or looked up?

When you buy the radio, the previous owner should give you the code or there should be a code given in the radio book when you newly buy the car. If you don't have either you better hope for the best that it doesn't ask for a code. Sometimes it just bypasses it, *but very unlikely
