Today I'm sharing with you my setup for my ducks that keeps their water clean for a long time and minimizes water changes to 20 minutes. After a lot of trial and error, I have finally found a great setup to keep my duck's water clean. Below, I've listed the few extra parts required for the FULL setup I have:
Your ducks told me they want these mealworms (you'll thank me later!) - amzn.to/3Bdu9o8
MODIFICATIONS IN THIS VIDEO (required):
Rubber seal: amzn.to/33EBhbo
Silicone Seal: amzn.to/2ZUrYD3
CURRENT UPGRADES (STRONGLY recommend):
1. Increased Diameter from Pump to Swirl Filter from 1 in to 1 1/2 in with better quality hose - amzn.to/3FwTETF
Note: This will require proper adjustments to swirl filter inlet sizes!
2. Replacing the Return Line with upgraded hose as current one has already torn - temporarily repaired for winter.
FreezeFlex 1in - amzn.to/3VBqj00
Seems great quality. Here is the Hydromaxx alternative - amzn.to/3VYXZok
I STRONGLY recommend using the tubing above and avoiding the corrugated versions for this application as those will not last over time.
PARTS (Please let me know if a link does not work):
1 1/2" Uniseal: amzn.to/37ni8N5
1 1/2" Hose (This has a smooth inside which I think might help prevent clogs as well: amzn.to/3o6x88B
Coupling for pump to hose: amzn.to/36kfpEM
Coupling for hose to swirl filter: amzn.to/3ln5hPI
1 1/2 PVC: amzn.to/33sJUGy
90 degree elbow: amzn.to/39qBIdS
ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS FOR THE FULL SETUP:
(Not needed) Butyl Tape - amzn.to/3fF0QgH
Silicone 180 1-inch hose - amzn.to/2CgrJJz
90 degree elbow to connect to 180 hose - amzn.to/3hF1Jb6
1 inch bulkhead (need 2) for hoses to exit duck run - amzn.to/2YKaWpX
1-inch pond tubing (need 3: input, output, swirl drain/backwash) - amzn.to/3fBwOdT
1-1/4 pond tubing (for swirl to biofilter) - amzn.to/37CuyQX
Extension Cord (that can handle enough amperage) - amzn.to/3fzvF6z
Waterproof box (because ducks splash and it rains! My filter would always trip the breaker before I got this!) - amzn.to/30RLqSb
Power Strip (this one supposedly has a lot of safety built in) - amzn.to/3wLn26T
Waterproof Single Plug Cover (for extension cord to power strip): amzn.to/3Y6nXbl
Pool (I tried many and this one works by far the best!) - amzn.to/3iGR04T
Pool Noodles (for them to perch next to the pool, they are on these A TON!) - amzn.to/3uz5AhD OR amzn.to/3VW5Cvt
Gutter Drain Below Pool Drain Plug - amzn.to/3UzMySJ
Awesome Water Feeder - amzn.to/3F9jFHx
Aquagarden Pump/Filter - amzn.to/3qwBY5V
WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THE SWIRL FILTER
(See my DIY here: • The BEST Swirl Filter ... )
Required Tools:
Drill - amzn.to/2AyVjto
2-inch Hole Saw - amzn.to/2B5Kjni
1 3/4-inch Hole Saw - amzn.to/2UDQHJe
PVC Cutter - amzn.to/2ULCw54
Pipe Thread Sealant - amzn.to/3d0u7kr
PVC Primer - amzn.to/3fowpvq
PVC Cement - amzn.to/2YBq8FA
Project List:
Barrel - amzn.to/2Y4ujuV
1 inch UNISEAL 2 pack - amzn.to/2AAidQX
1 1/4 inch UNISEAL 2 pack - amzn.to/37zHQ0r
1 1/4 inch PVC pipe - amzn.to/2MVzcQn
1 inch PVC pipe - amzn.to/2B5LtiE
1 1/4-inch barb fitting - amzn.to/3hoShbH
1-inch barb fitting (NEED 3!) - amzn.to/2Yy7Dlt
1 1/4-inch adapter - amzn.to/2zw8quN
1-inch adapter (NEED 3!) - amzn.to/2XY6MeM
1 1/4-inch elbow - amzn.to/3dZ5eqI
1-inch elbow - amzn.to/2MVhFb3
3 to 1 1/2-inch “drain” - amzn.to/3dWe2NX
1-1/2 inch to 1 1/4 reducer - amzn.to/2UHFRC5
3-inch drain cover - amzn.to/2B6W0tX
1-inch spigot - amzn.to/2YvCQWw
1-inch tubing - amzn.to/3fihItu
Hose clamp for drain - amzn.to/2UV0DhP
Stake to attach hose to have control and stay clean (you don’t have to use this but something similar - you’d remove it after you clean, along with the hose clamp) - amzn.to/2MVT9qb
Bio Media - amzn.to/3hpQiE7
Media Bags (You could get the 6 pack and it would still fit!) - amzn.to/2XZZWWf
PVC Lengths:
3 inch (x2) of 1-inch PVC
2 inch of 1-inch PVC
7 inches of 1-1/4 inch PVC Note: you can modify shorter (min of 3 inches) if you have trouble getting the drain level.
Flexible hose for drain - 32 inches
My new filtration setup:
Laguna Clear Flo Kit - amzn.to/2ABXRqx
(Or to purchase individually)
Laguna 960 pump - amzn.to/30F904A
Laguna Pressure-flo 2000 - amzn.to/4a5iaIh

I’ve had ducks for a year, and in the summer I had to dump their dog pool every single day. I bought the pump you have with the light last year, but it’s not enough. It’s getting warm here again, and I was not looking forward to the daily work. It is the biggest pain. This video is exactly what I needed. Thank you!

@@MegaMilezAwesome! I found this video about a year and a half ago, purchased the Laguna pump and pressure filter then with intentions of adding the swirl filter later. Your right about the corrugated tubing becoming brittle over time but I haven't switched it out yet. Also, I'm thinking of doing multiple stage swirls since I have currently 5 adult ducks using a 125 gallon koi pond with a return waterfall box this will be connected, soon to be 8 adults as I will be merging my flocks back together after breeding hormones subside. Any and all advice is welcomed....and prayers for getting some control over clean out days 😂

Hey man, thanks for making all these videos! I've come across a few of your previous videos now while researching a backyard wildlife pond with a waterfall, and we want to get some ducks and allow them in it as well. It sounds like you have to drain the swirl tank every couple of weeks? I was really hoping to go much longer than that. I'm planning an inground pond that will probably be 2000+ gal, we want to put a bunch of plants in there so we will need to ensure we pick stuff ducks won't eat but those should help to clean the water a little. I was thinking of using a large trash can for a swirl filter and am hoping the bigger size container and more space between the intake and the outlet will allow me to go longer without cleaning. I plan to have the trash can swirl filter overflow into a downpipe that goes to the bottom of a DIY 20, maybe 40-gallon lava rock biofilter. We were hoping to get 4 ducks so hopefully the larger pond and filter will be enough to keep me from having to clean the filters every couple of weeks... every couple of months was my hope! I guess frequent cleanings won't be too bad as long as I can figure out a way to hide the garbage can while keeping the clean-out spigot accessible. I've been thinking maybe I should just get a wet/dry bucket head vacuum that is solely for vacuuming out the swirl filter so I can bury the swirl filter to hide it easier... but I guess that trades off cleaning convenience for looks and I've already warned my partner that they will need to help me figure out how to hide the garbage can haha. If you have any suggestions for having to clean less often, or for building an in-ground pond that we hope will attract various wildlife, I'd love to hear it! Thanks again for your videos!

You're welcome! Having that much water will automatically require less cleaning, unless you plan on having a lot of ducks. The way I have the swirl filter setup, it takes all of 5 minutes to remove the lid, drain, spray out, and close up. I'd worry about doing lava rocks as eventually that will need to be cleaned out as well as duck poo builds up. In addition, if you plan on doing a garbage can, you'll have to figure out the proper flow rates as to not have it simply overflow - or seal it and create a pressure system like mine. I'd strongly advise just having whatever swirl container have the drain at the bottom with a hose on the outside leading away to drain it where you'd like. It just makes life easy when you are cleaning. In terms of my maintenance/your reference point, I have approx a 150-175 gal system with two ducks and I will either fully drain and clean the system/pool (20mins), partial water change (15 mins) or swirl filter spray out (5 mins) every 1 to 1.5 weeks depending on their water. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to create a system that extended drain intervals while making maintenance super easy and this is what I ended up with. Before I had this setup, it would take me over an hour to clean their pool out and it was a total disaster. Another alternative is to try and make an entire aquaponics setup - but I'd imagine it could be rather difficult due to the load ducks put on any system. That said, a swirl filter will for sure be an asset, along with the size of your planned system.

Hi I followed ur instructions on how to make the swirl filter and connected to the main filter also a Laguna. However when placed on the ground at the same level I get a bottleneck somewhere and water doesn’t flow into the Laguna. I’ve now placed the swirl filter a bit higher than the Laguna and that works but still every now and then the swirl filter overflows . Would u have any ideas as to how to fix these bottlenecks?
@MegaMilez
@MegaMilez Жыл бұрын
The swirl filter has to have the lid on along with the rubber gasket to seal it. Did you do that? The laguna filter is a pressure filter and needs a pressurized system.

Not a new owner, but I’m one of the folks that uses a kiddie pool and dumps it out every so often. But, encountering your video has me considering a filter (and maybe bubble aeration to keep algae down) two quick questions… 1. I know nothing about pond filters… why do you need the DIY Swirl Filter AND the store bought Laguna 2000? 2. I use a pond heater during the winter, do you run your filter and pump during the winter also?
@MegaMilez
@MegaMilez 5 ай бұрын
1. The swirl filter collects the larger material and prevents it from clogging the system. Also, without the swirl filter the water would not be able to stay clean. 2. I use a small deicer when necessary and run the system 24/7/365. Though the heat does seem to make things pretty gross.

That is tough, but not impossible! Depending on what you mean by "nearby electricity", I personally run a 100ft extension cord for everything. Been using this exact one for years with zero issues amzn.to/4bzXQjo Otherwise, you'll just have to get a larger kiddie pool (not inflatable as it won't last). Something like this amzn.to/4dTDhzI you can dump out and refill - though I'd suggest creating a drainage system or even installing a drain plug to prevent the run from turning into a swamp over a few changes.

That might be difficult but not impossible! I'm not sure the extent of "No nearby electricity", but I've been running this 100ft extension cable for everything (on a GFCI) with zero issues: amzn.to/4dRPk0B. If that won't work you'll need to get a hard plastic pool you can tip over like this: amzn.to/4dTDhzI - though I'd recommend creating a drainage system to prevent a swampy run. Possibly even adding a drain plug in the pool itself.

I think the most difficult part of doing that for a duck application is getting the flow right so it wont overflow and wont clog.

Heads up, these are broken: "Laguna Pressure-flo 2000" "Power Strip (this one supposedly has a lot of safety built in)". Reposted because I think my first comment got flagged because I included the links.

If you put a piece of copper pipe or anything copper in your pool, it will prevent algae from growing.

We have 6 Muscovy and 2 Pekins so we picked up a 300 gallon stock tank for them. It's recessed so they can basically just walk into it. For filtration we start with a Laguna 2000GPH pump, Laguna 4000GPH filter (bio & foam filters and UV light), Tetra waterfall, small separate pump to circulate water even more, Microbe-Lift for algae and "sludge" (duck crap lol). The filters need to be cleaned every week, replaced once or twice a year depending on how they hold up, in the summer (110+ degree temps) water is drained every month, come fall to spring every 3 months or so. There is also an auto-leveler installed since evaporation is a big deal here. The ducks love it and it's been going strong in the current configuration for about 3 years. Cheers!

Sounds like a nice setup! Me personally, I drain their water each week or a partial every other week - mainly because a lot of their waste is liquid that won't be caught by any filter, so I don't like the idea of them drinking that. I only have to rinse out the swirl filter, rarely take apart and clean the pressure filter, and clean out the in pond all in one filter (that I have in there mainly for water feature/light). I am going to order some of the Microb-Lift/Algaway you mentioned, going to give that a shot - would be nice to not have to scrub the algae all the time!

Sorry, well... it's a filtration system, it filters the water. ;) If you're asking about the swirl filter, it is a type of filtration to remove large particulate matter. You can search online for how it works.
