Is everyone missing the point that he is helping a friend who doesn't have a lot of money? Yea solid wood is great, but this man used a piece of mdf to give his friend a beautiful new space! Great Job as always Mike! I greatly appreciate you making projects that the regular man can afford!

I guess removing sink and plumbing in kitchen would save money. Also spending hours working on a $5 piece of wood would save money if you have the time. Realistically get a professional to remodel your kitchen and spend the money for a nice kitchen. Your home is generally your biggest investment, your kitchen is the most expensive room in the house.

Not particularly my style but it's definitely a huge improvement. I'm sure with a really cool backsplash, sink, and some paint on the walls it will definitely look great.
@MarkLindsayCNC8 жыл бұрын
As a former cabinetmaker, I'll say right up front that you did an excellent job. Euro-style hinges are really nice to work with, aren't they? Now you know why they're so popular. All in all, about the only criticism I'd make would be your choice in making the drawer boxes out of MDF. I think your friend would be happier if they were made from a good hardwood plywood. The MDF drawer boxes might not last very long. Then again I could be completely wrong, but I don't think so. It depends on how you use your kitchen. MDF has been used to make doors and drawer fronts since MDF was first routed, and it'll hold up really well if the paint is kept decent, so no criticism there. Overall, however, I think it's a job well done - one you both should be proud of. Well done!
@ModernBuilds8 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thanks mark! That's a good tip on the drawers, One thing that makes me feel better is they'll all have liners and one of the silverware organizers to hopefully reduce wear and tear

Those hinges are massive the savers, very forgiving as well. Blüm, who first developed this pot hinges does soft close rails/slides as well. For the unit that is flush to the wall, there are variants to the pot hinge that allow it to open flush with cabinet unit or forward to avoid the handle crashing.

The results are awesome. The tutorial was fresh. You did a better choice using mdf because flat plywood or maple wood will warp. The paint you use was my only concern. Laquar prime and laquar base with commercial varnish sealer will waterproof your doors and resist wear and tear. Thanks for idea on aligning door fronts with the handles itself.
@davideggleston8376 жыл бұрын
Thank you! stellar idea, I was trying to figure out the best way to update my look on a tight budget. I'll have to do some pricing but I thing that cabinet reface might just still be in budget while looking loads better then just sanding the old doors and painting everything.

Very cool. Thanks especially for the glue+water tip for sealing end-grain/pores. That's going to come in handy. One joking remark if I may - the kitchen now looks a lot like one from IKEA - just made from solid wood and MDF ... Anyways - love your style. Keep on producing great content. Most appreciated! Thanks and cheers!
@ModernBuilds8 жыл бұрын
You're right it does. In my opinion, I love the designs Ikea makes, It's just the quality and rigidity of their products that I don't like.
@JMTosses8 жыл бұрын
I fully agree. Usually IKEA has a way of keeping it lean and aesthetic without the "too much" I see in so many other furniture houses. Also if they have something good like the billy for example, they will only do minor improvements and stick with the general design. That way I for example could modify lots of old billy to make one huge billy wall. And the quality is OK if you get the better stuff as for example the PAX system which can be moved a few times without going bad. My main beef with IKEA is the particle board which cannot really be upcycled or even be reclaimed once it's too far gone where with plain wood you can plane down the rough spots and reuse pretty much everything unless it's burned or turned into dust. Anyway - love your work - keep doing it and great to see you do something completely new every once in a while! Cheers!

Tristan Dollinger, they are definitely modern and minimal. I don't think they look cheap at all.

A border would make it look a LOT less modern for sure. A glass window would be cool but a lot more work and more expensive.
@KMayflower7 жыл бұрын
Having details on a door definitely does not make it look modern. Detailed doors are actually out of style... Flat panels are far more on trend and glass with that small amount of cupboards is tough. Besides glass is actually not that stylish anymore either imho.
