It's actually possible that the built up grease was starting to eat through the finish and it wasn't the cleaning product. I've had one of those plug in oil air freshener things take the paint off a shelf that was too near that outlet. Prolonged exposed to certain oils can start to take off finishes.

I did your method on my cabinets. Using the exact product and process. My cabinets had a lot of build up. The cutting board degreaser was not that successful. I had to scrub a lot. Great video! Very informative! One question: how can the mineral oil be fatal if swallowed, when it's a) food-grade, and b) recommended for use on cutting boards (which will, of course, mean that food cut on that cutting board will be in contact with the mineral oil, which means that you end up swallowing mineral oil when you eat that cut food)? I normally use mineral oil to treat my cutting boards, but if it *IS* toxic, maybe I should find some other way to condition them?
@asmith25382 жыл бұрын
I left a comment about this too, but mineral oil can be taken as a laxative so I'm confused as to what is being used here.
@AskAngelaBrown2 жыл бұрын
Hi Happy Bunny! Sorry, I didn’t mean to cause confusion. You’re right, in the video I was referring to the mineral oil as food grade. You are ok to use it on your cutting boards. Here is the definition of "food grade" www.csidesigns.com/blog/articles/what-is-food-grade and here is the Safety Data Sheet for the Mineral Oil used in this video. www.howardproducts.com/files/sds/HOW-113_Cutting-Board-Oil-1.pdf It is important to note that mineral oil is a liquid made from petroleum. While it is used for many ordinary household things and is safe for the intended purposes, using it in a manner inconsistent way (such as confusing it with other kitchen oils) could have fatal effects. The warning is to keep it in a locked area when not using it on your cabinets or cutting board and it is NOT intended for consumption.
@happybunny8922 жыл бұрын
@@AskAngelaBrown Oh, okay - that's a relief! Thanks for replying, and for the really useful links - I had recently oiled my cutting board with mineral oil, and was concerned that the food I'd chopped on it since then might have been (mildly) toxic!
@johnstorrie36352 жыл бұрын
Mineral oils are oils derived from crude oil as used in lubricants and have different types. Further processing of the paraffinic oils result in white oils referred to as paraffin oil. They are safe, however, ingestion of them is a means to promote bowel movement as in laxative effect.

@AskAngelaBrown2 жыл бұрын
For a greasy stovetop, you can use a degreaser or dish soap. Leaving it on (dwell time) shouldn't be a problem because the surface of the stovetop will have a gloss coat or an enamel on it. After you've scrubbed the surface and the stovetop is clean, rinse and wipe any soap or degreaser residue from the surface before cooking again. 👍

@AskAngelaBrown2 жыл бұрын
Are the layers also wood? Are they sealed wood? And is it all the same type of wood or are they different types of wood? The best option for something like this (assuming it's a custom piece, which suggests it could be pricy is to contact the manufacturer or store of the brand and ask if they have a custom or proprietary product they use for cleaning - and if using it will void the warranty. They often sell something that is in alignment with the products they sell and if something malfunctions they will honor the warranty. Does that make sense?

I dont understand the mineral oil (food grade) is fatal if swallowed but you can apply it to a cutting board? Also, are you using a dry sponge wiping the oil off? Thank you.
@AskAngelaBrown2 жыл бұрын
Hi Deb, Great questions. Here is the meaning of "food grade" www.csidesigns.com/blog/articles/what-is-food-grade and here is the Safety Data Sheet for the Mineral Oil used in this video. www.howardproducts.com/files/sds/HOW-113_Cutting-Board-Oil-1.pdf it is important to note that mineral oil is a liquid made from petroleum. While it is used for many ordinary household things and is safe for the intended purposes, using it in a manner inconsistent way (such as confusing it with other kitchen oils) could have fatal effects. The warning is to keep it in a locked area when not using it on your cabinets or cutting board. It is NOT intended for consumption. The sponge can be damp - it absorbs grease better when it is damp, and it is more flexible and easier to use.

Thank you. The project turned out really well. We do this process for average families once a year and then families with young children (who can reach the cabinets) twice a year. This keeps them looking nice year round.

How about painted cabinets? Any advice?
@AskAngelaBrown2 жыл бұрын
Are they wood? If yes, are they sealed? If yes, the same method can be used. The mineral oil is clear, will remove the grease, and can be wiped right off. 👍

Hi! What type of brush attachment for the drill do we use for this project? I have a kit of attachments, but I find that even the softest one could potentially scratch the wood. Thank you in advance!
@AskAngelaBrown2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeniffer, thanks for watching. Here is the paid link amzn.to/3PbggvQ to the drill brushes I use for cleaning. When you hover over the picture a row of product pictures appear. One of the pictures in this lineup has a color-coded chart that explains which color brush (strength type) you use on which type of surface. I know it seems like you will scratch the cupboards - but the green one is designed specifically for this purpose.

I found it interesting the food grade mineral oil is also toxic. A tip I saw on a home diy channel involved cleaning greasy hands (think mechanics) without harsh chemicals to dry them out. Like dissolves like so use cooking oil to get the tough grease off then finish with dish soap and hot water. Sounds like the same principle as using the mineral oil.
@AskAngelaBrown Жыл бұрын
In the video I was referring to the mineral oil as food grade. Hi question. What does the butcher block oil do. Thank you
@AriannaAyers Жыл бұрын
1.) Wear protection, mask, glasses, and gloves 2.) Take off knobs, and soak in Dawn dish soap and water for 10+ minutes 3.) Take a foam paint “tester” brush (black foam applicator, wooden handle), and “paint” on food - grade mineral oil used to moisturize cutting boards. Store in an away / safe place. Wipe after 10 minutes with a cellulose sponge, which you will dispose of after cleaning the cabinets. 4.) Use Murphy’s oil soap Murphy’s oil soap in a spray bottle on cabinets, and a power drill + brush attachment combo. NOTE: Never use degreaser. It will dehydrate the wood, can take off paint, and ruin or remove the cabinet finish.

I have a question why is it when I clean it looks horrible but when someone else cleans it looks beautiful??
@AskAngelaBrownАй бұрын
Great question. We are our own worst enemies. We are more critical of ourselves, our work and our homes than we are about others in most cases. We see all the flaws and imperfections of our own homes, when we tend to give a free pass to others helping us. Learn to give yourself a thumbs up for your efforts and you'll notice your appreciation of your own work will improve. 😀

I don't have an issue with greasy gunk build up other than on the blinds/thing above our stove (it's a vent thing from the 80s that used to have a massive microwave in it and one of these days we will replace it with a proper hood but it's a space with odd dimensions and we're trying to figure out how best to handle it). HOWEVER - my cabinets have the recessed panels in them like those in this video and giving them a good scrub down is such a chore. That drill brush is the tool I never knew I needed. I've been putting off giving the cabinets a good cleaning - I was going to get started today - but I simply must obtain that tool first. It seems the green one is "medium" stiffness and there are a few colors of medium stiffiness, yellow, blue, and green - the color is just so you can keep them straight for dedicated chores. Good to know for anyone looking to buy. So I have a set of brushes ordered and now this task I have been putting off... well now I can't wait to get started! Thank you so much for this tip, your videos are so inspiring and helpful. :-D

How to get rid of heavy grease from cabinets? It’s very easy…..don’t fry greasy foods or deep fry inside the house to begin with. After spending a fortune on a kitchen remodel, I bought an electric frypan and an electric deep fryer and simply use them outside on the back patio when cooking or frying messy foods……it’s genius, no messy cleanups on the stove or cabinets or strong odors in the kitchen.
