@PiDsPagePrototypesАй бұрын
Hard part is finding a shop where they understand how alignment works, and will then alter the setting to match what you want the car to drive like. Let's just say, that when you take a '66 Valiant, keep the factory toe setting, give it a smidge of neg camber and a whole bite of positive caster, they stop understeering and corner like the lightweight sports chassis they really can be.

God I love a four post lift with an alignment computer. You roll on, suspension already settled, zero the wheels and start aligning. Really expensive, but the boss paid for it. String alignment is for open wheel racers where you have easy acces to all the relevant nuts and bolts.

When you replace the temp sensor in the block, remove your rad cap and hook up a shop vac (duct tape) to your rad. Orient the shop vac hose vertical for a couple of feet to prevent drawing liquid out of the rad and turn on the shop vac. This should prevent coolant from draining from the block (but keep your finger on the hole when you pull the sensor to limit the size of the air bubble you introduce). Works for fuel and oil systems as well.
@oilyragsgarage7200Ай бұрын
Have done quite a few home alignments because my local roads are trash. My go to method is string, 4 jackstands, 2 steel pipes with sluts cut in them for the string at even lengths. From there I make a square box around the car along the centre line of each wheel with a metric steel ruler, although sometimes I break out the imperial one just to annoy my car mates LoL.
@Simey2wheelsАй бұрын
Considering race teams used to do this constantly I'd say it's good enough! Half the wheel alignment places don't really care as much as we would, so I also did my own on my old 911. Quite easy and fun to do. I used some long timbers front and rear with vert rods for my strings. Also used a digital level but didn't use it's results (wasn't accurate or repeatable) so I reverted to trig for better accuracy.
@panamafloyd1469Ай бұрын
When I got my first sportscar in the early '80s, I wondered why they handled as poorly as my dad's Dodge Fury after I did suspension work. Thank goodness an older guy gave me a well-worn copy of Fred Puhn's book. Funny thing, when I was racing SCCA in the mid '90s, I was still using string. I feel like one of those 'old guys' who still knows how to rebuild carburetors.😄

First, great job at doing a static alignment. I've aligned thousands of cars and even some track cars. When doing track cars, you must compensate for the weight of the driver and if you really want to split hairs, a full tank of fuel verses an empty tank and split the difference. I would use sand bags in the drivers seat and in the trunk to compensate. You would be surprised at how much 200 pounds in the drivers seat and truck can affect settings.

I did my own alignment with a telescopic rod type and it came out perfect. What I discovered was with a perfect alignment the tires will never wear out evenly because nobody only drives in a straight line. The outer edge will wear out faster due to all the turning and because our right turns are tighter than left turns the outside of the left tire will wear out faster than the right tire.

I used to do this on Corvettes that I did frame off Restorations with a string and turntable and plates like you have we would put a small shim in the front string going around the widest part of the tire. Wrap the string all the way around the car with a pretty heavy spring to hold tension on it in the back middle then we would have one of those caster camp bubble things that would go on the bearing hub with a needle to center it in the spindle in later years when I did alignments with regular machines, you had to calibrate the heads, but it was very important that the head was at the midpoint of the wheel directly out from where the axle was. Especially when you’re doing 20° sweeps of the front wheels you won’t get the exact same number I don’t believe if it is not in the center of the wheel.

I'll be super happy for you when you finally get Mr.2 tuned but keep in mind that (coming from someone that's been dyno and real world tuning bikes for 20 years) your tune will likely need some tweaks using your driving data (and seat of the pants feel). Most people can't/don't feel the imperfections of the dyno vs driving tune but I believe you will. That plus, it literally takes a year of driving (through all four seasons) to perfect the Air Temp. and Barometric (when available) tables...

F yeah! Amazing work on that alignment, figuring out that fault with the electrical and sensor diagnosis, loved the cuts and edits on the video too, pizza squirrels are cool and so it's the Bowser joke lol. I am just up to date on this car from a few videos back so when I spied a LINK ECU I was really excited because I've wanted to try and get one thanks to wanting to try entry ignition with port and direct injection. An advanced ignition timing that has a direct injection just before top dead center that runs off of a lean mix to a nox compression and o2 burn at peak high pressure for gas to be less able to boil and vaporize but still burns while other combustion is already occurring. Engineering explained talks about what entry ignition is and it's effectively this. Air and fuel is hot, gets squeezed into small hole, burns into larger chamber hole, power goes burr. But in this instance it takes energy to overcome the fuel vaporization point under higher pressures but it has a longer duration to do it while it helps prevent knocking by being done this way. It cools the top of the combustion chamber for a bit but then gains heat as it burns nox and the rest of the o2 in the "reaction vessel chamber" fancy speak for a sealed metal syringe that's attached right to spin something lol. But I don't have any money for that at all 😅 so I opted for saved over time and arguments and making deals with parents, yada yada for a titan 2.0 projeckt ECU from wmtronics based on the speeduino stuff, it's got up to 8 cylinders is port and ignition, all the stuff of a fully kitted out ,or nearly, mega squirt setup for about $400! Looks good too, can come fully done up already with soldered parts, can be much cheaper, even run off the same tuning software honestly. There aren't many reviews out there, but what is there looks good, a huge forum too! anyways, enough nerding out about stuff from me, I got everything going from leftover stuff from the parents and hoarded stuff. cars be expensive. tools, everything. hardcore but I really wanted to try and get there somehow. Thanks for continuing to put out videos, they help me out a lot, hope the cat is doing well. I can't always keep up but I try, its been hard trying to even try for me, let alone validate things that i have for ideas. saw a driving for answers video come out about a new porshe patent that is basically exactly one of my designs i talk about in this video I @ for integza for this radial engine idea i had. it was like over a year ago or something like that. been bumming me out hard, honestly. not even getting into a whole bunch of other ones. I can't even search for my videos on youtube search and find them, its crap, so if anyone reading this wants to find it, its on my xenonreality channel and its in my engine playlist. linking things seems weird to do on another persons channel, so im not going to do that. keep up the great work, have a nice one :)

I remember my POS 1980 Olds Omega - I did a front-end alignment on it with two sledgehammers! Ten-pounder for the caster, twenty-pounder for the toe. The car had been t-boned - TWICE - by the time it was handed down to me. Struts were bent, same for the tie rods; the balls in the ball- joints were CYLINDERS instead of balls. It crabbed like hell above 5mph, hence my desperate measures. Amazingly enough, the damn thing drove straight after ''Hammertime." Well, as straight as you could get with a car that had built-in understeer from the factory!!! The rear end? I shimmed every other lug nut, and overinflated the tires by 2 psi, and called it good - those cars had a rear "axle" that looked like it belonged on an old-school Radio Flyer kiddie-wagon!!!
