Back in the 80's, I had my BC Rich Mockingbird long horn done in a finish like this. It was pearl white but depending on how the lights hit it and the angle, it was blue...they called it white flip flop back then.. Still have the axe, but haven't played in years. That blue/purple looks sweet!

So, I just painted a no name el cheapo bass I got from Amazon with this Rustoleum color shift line (there are at least 3 different versions of the same paint just from these guys) but in the Rose Champaign color. It came out great, well as great as I could have. There was an issue with the wood, some flaws couldn't be sanded out, so there are a few weird flaws in the paint, but in areas you can't see during normal usage. I was blown away by how good the shift looks in person, no video or picture can really capture it.I paid 13 bucks for a can of it, used a can and a half to get the effect/shade I was happy with. Used Rustoleum American Accents Satin black, figured it would make the color shift pop, and it really did. You REALLY need to take your time with this paint, especially if you don't have much experience with spray painting. It can get away from you really easy. Their reccomendation to not sand it makes it even more challenging, because sanding it removes the flake that makes the color shift. But it really does compare to a spray gun formula. I didn't poly/clear coat it, it's just a cheap bass that I wanted to practice on before I try to build my own bass. I threw a black bridge on it, a cheap pre-wired pre anmp/pickup, some black Fender J bass style tuners in black. It sounds good enough that I'd use it for practice or an occasional performance for the heck of it. When it does wear it will just look better.

This paint does look good but I used to have a hell of a time trying to refinish car panels with the stuff.It's sometimes easier to paint the whole car because, as we know, painting panels edge to edge is never going to be a perfect match and sometimes they are too different. You can't flick blend the paint into the next panel as the full colour ground coat is needed to provide consistent opacity for the effective/reactive semi transparent coat. It can react differently depending on application of the top coat lacquer as well, many test spray out cards can be needed. It's an attractive effect but difficult to repair. Having said that, repairing it on a guitar would just require a refinish all over (after appropriate prep work) and that isn't too bad as it is small compared to a motor vehicle and more fun. Great demo video as always. Thanks. 🤘👍🎸

Thank you for the video! I have some questions regarding how to go around an ash strat body that used to have a poly finish that I removed: 1. I've got two questions that are a bit irrelevant to this video, but I'm going to ask anyways. First of all, thanks so much for all of the time you take to make free videos to help people! Question #1: Can I cover a oil-based poly with a water-based poly? Or vice versa? Question #2: If I covered a high gloss paint with a flat/satin poly, what finish would come out? Flat or Gloss?
@BradAngove7 жыл бұрын
You can cover a water-based poly with an oil based poly. Just make sure it's fully dry and give it a light scuff and clean first. If you cover the gloss with a flat or satin, you'll end up with the flat or satin. Make sure you scuff the gloss (after letting it dry) before you coat over it.
@JacobsBrendan7 жыл бұрын
Can I cover an oil-based poly with a water-based poly without using a primer? I know you usually can't cover oil paint with water paint without primer. So, I wanted to know if the same principles applied to polyurethanes and other clear coats.

Have you ever used the duplicolor mirage? Also gonna try the vinyl sealer you talked about in a different video. What do you think the effect would be if I did a couple light coats of Chameleon paint, clear coat it and then go over it again lightly with another chameleon paint, or maybe start with sparkle silver, for instance, clear coat then light chameleon paint? Hi Brad, thanks for the videos. They have helped me mucho with my project. I have been working on repainting a recurve bow riser, similar to a guitar, its wood. I did this same paint scheme before watching any of your videos but ran into some problems here and there. I am on my 3rd attempt. It came out great the first 2 times, I really like rust oleum paints, but the problems were really in the prep. Do you have any advice on prepping wood for paint. I could probably find some videos but yours are great and I thought I'd bring it up to you. Besides that, I'm wondering what you would recommend for my next step. I have prepped the wood and primer (BIN Shellac white, highly recommend for wood) a little better than before. The first couple times I did this I did 2 black base coats, 2 colorshift coats, and 3 clear coats back to back with 20 minute flash times in between. Came out effing awesome....until I tried to handle it too soon and got a cool towel effect imprint....then I saw your video explaining that a little too late. Anyways, this time around I already have my primer and 1st black base coat, next I plan to sand with 800, clean it with Windex (is that ok), spray 1 more coat of black, 2 coats of colorshift, I'm throwing in some translucent black shadows in some areas. So do you think I should maybe put a couple coats of clear over the color shift and let it dry a few days before going into the translucent? Or should I go into the shadows and clear in one session? Thanks.
@BradAngove6 жыл бұрын
You’re on the right track. Windex is fine for the cleaning part. Don’t do more than three coats total in a session. 4 at the outside. Otherwise the first ones won’t dry properly. It’s up to you whether you want to use an intercoat clear prior to the black, but I think it’s a good idea. It’s something that the automotive custom painters do frequently.
@BradAngove6 жыл бұрын
Yes, sand again before applying the colour. I recommend you have a look at my video on why I never wet sand guitars. I also have one titled something like “do you need to sand between coats of paint” that should answer your question better than I can here.

Just to make sure I understand what you did: You applied base coat flat black, waited for it to flash, then applied three coats color shift, waiting to flash between each coat?

Hey Brad! ive painted my Ibanez RGA8 with one can of this Color Shift paint. I got a bit of orange peel because the distance wasnt uniform. Should i wet sand it with 800/1500 sandpaper or it can be fixed aplying clear over it then sanding/buffing/polishing? What clear should i use to avoid any chemical reaction between paints? There's the cheap Rust Oleum lacquer the one with the black chair pic on the can and the more expensive Automotive Acrylic Lacquer but the latter says "Do not use over existing air-dried enamel paints." A bit confusing. Thanks!

@BradAngove7 жыл бұрын
You can sand it flat, but I'd try to throw another light coat on afterward and then seal it in with the clear. Sanding it can mess with the way the metallic pigments sit. I put the mask on at first to set a good example, but I was super hungover and it was making me feel less than ideal haha.

Yes, I wondered whether the light coat after flat sanding was the way to go as with other metallic paint.....thanks. I get a similar feeling wearing my crash helmet when I have a hangover. I still have to wear the helmet, but at least I can open the visor! Cheers.......

Quick question... could you hydro dip with this kind of spray paint?
@BradAngove4 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure. I don’t hydro dip.
@caseyharris40134 жыл бұрын
Would it be as effective if you turned it to a matte finish or used a matte clear coat. Is the gloss what makes the chameleon effect? Thanks!
@BradAngove4 жыл бұрын
It would be less effective because the light wouldn’t pass through as well. Light angles are what give the effect it’s impact.

How long did you wait between black and chameleon, and chameleon to clear coat? Did you sand between coats at all? I'm used to painting vehicles. This seems a bit different

It’s not different really. I believe I waited about 10-15 minutes and didn’t sand in this case. It was a long time ago though, so I don’t recall exactly.

I know this video is old but hoping to still get a response. I’m painting a Jackson Kelly and got the black basecoat and have this exact paint. Was thinking of using a different basecoat on the beveled edges. Maybe a green? And I have a lacquer clear and also planned on putting glow in the dark between the kameleon paint and the lacquer. Any recommendations? Would the green look ok?
@BradAngove5 жыл бұрын
The green would look green haha. If that’s what you want go for it. Not sure what you mean about putting glow in the dark between the layers, but in any event, be sure to test the lacquer over your paint on something else first to make sure they work together.

Hey there Brad, I'm thinking of stripping my old squier tele with a poly finish and giving it this chameleon treatment. I was wondering if I have to apply a wood sealer after heat-gunning the paint off? Also the appropriate times to sand in the entirety of the procedure. Sorry for the loaded question! Love your videos!!
@BradAngove4 жыл бұрын
Hi Patrick. Have you considered just sanding the original finish with some 800 grit and moving straight into painting it?
@hughmann1304 жыл бұрын
@@BradAngove would this work? I'm completely new to refinishing a guitar so I've not much knowledge or experience to go off of. I'd sand the entire paint off or just enough to give the new paint something to bite onto? Thank you so much for the quick response.

Yes just sand the original stuff so the new paint will bind mechanically. Use the original paint as your sealer.

Hey there Brad! Just finished shooting an S type guitar with this same paint and I'm looking forward to clearing it with spray max 2k. Got a really clean application with no visible dust/fibers/bugs. Any recommendations on cure time before applying a 2k? Should I wetsand the basecoat first before the clear?
@BradAngove2 жыл бұрын
I think if you wet sand it you will change the look of it dramatically. I’d let it sit for a couple weeks at least before clear coating with that product.
@guntherabrahamowicz46594 жыл бұрын
Would you sand it prior to adding a clear coat, or is this an exception?
@BradAngove4 жыл бұрын
I like to add one coat of clear within the re-coat time (15 minutes) so that I can sand that instead of sanding the paint directly. I would avoid sanding this paint directly.

Thanks Brad. Great videos. Trying out this paint on test samples with rustoleum matte black primer. It's been very inconsistent. Either streaking and poor coverage or blushing. Some days seems to work, other does not. I see folks online have been experiencing same thing. I've sprayed on low humidity days, cooler or warmer days, warmed up the can etc. Naturally I'm hesitant to try on the guitar. Any tips?

Low humidity is key to avoid blushing. I’m not sure why you would be having variability in coverage though.

Some tips - If this is your first time with a rattle can it should be 12-16" away. Very light coats. Try and mimic him you'll be running. Primer recommended Black base coat REQUIRED - 327866 Do NOT sand or thin the color shift paint in any way. Nope! Not even with wet 3000 grit sand paper. 3 color shift coats minimum, 5 should be good. Additional coats can be applied after a few minute which gives you time to look for any issues. If you leave it to dry for a full hour you need to wait a full 24 hours for another coat. A clear coat enhances the effect. Super light coats. 280702 OR USC SprayMax 2K Glamour High Gloss Aerosol Clear - Only with appropriate safety gear. Contains cyanide which will kill you.

If I use a heat resistant paint for the base and the clear, do you think it would last in a engine bay, on the valve covers?
@BradAngove4 жыл бұрын
I don’t know, so I can only guess. My guess is no though. Heat resistant paint doesn’t deteriorate from heat, but it also doesn’t insulate as far as I know.

What primer and clear coats could I use that wouldn't react with this paint?
@BradAngove2 жыл бұрын
It should be fine over more primers. I just used the rustoleum painters touch on this one. Clear coat is a bit of a different issue. Their same clear should work, and 2K clear likely works, but you have to be careful about timing since you can’t sand this stuff.

I wonder how this stuff would work for hydrodipping... Feature it prominently (b/c its expensive!), but work in some complimentary colors so it's almost a chameleon swirl... Or hydrodip with different color shifts... Oh man, if that worked it would be trippy!
@BradAngove7 жыл бұрын
+kirt fulcher That sounds like it would be pretty wild. The potential issue though is that the effect gets stronger as you add more coats. You would have to have a dark base, and then I’m not sure if you could get it on there thick enough for a decent effect.
@kirtfulcher62887 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it seems like the aerosol paints skin over pretty quickly for hydro dipping so I'm not sure you can build enough on the surface of the water first... Still, I just nabbed a $40 "project" guitar from the local music shop so I might just have a victim-er-test subject :)

Probably blushing. It comes from moisture being trapped under the finish from excess humidity.
