How to Do a Hanging Stern Draw Stroke | Intermediate Whitewater Kayaking Skills Series

The Hanging Stern Draw is an often overlooked but endlessly useful stroke for intermediate and advanced paddlers. It allows us to create cross-current momentum. it uses the force built by the current on the blade, to propel your kayak forward, rather than using multiple power strokes.

+NZ Adventurer it is primarily a dagger axiom 8.5. A couple if shots have the dagger nomad. Axiom is basically a planing hill version of the RPM

Hi Steve. It is a way of performing that yes. It is an extension of a sweep which helps continue to drive cross current speed.

How well would this work in a packraft? I imagine you really have to exaggerate the edging

It certainly works in a packraft. The main issue is because the hull speed on a pack raft is slower you lose the power on the blade more quickly. You can do it with no edge in a packraft as long as your paddle is sufficiently long.
