That is some serious Truth. A No Buy is not a casual thing, especially for a year. It's actual Shadow Work, dealing with a part of us that we don't like much. By removing the "consumer Want-Buy-Get-Forget-Want" noise we can hear ourselves clearly, and we don't always have the sweetest voice once we can hear ourselves clearly.

I'm going on a no-buy for 2019... and boy is it hard to not succumb to the panic-last-month-buy. I clearly was not prepared to feel that much anxiety about the soon to be no-buy. And this anxiety shows me how much of a disturbed relationship I have with shopping. So many emotion!!
@OpportunisticOmnivore6 жыл бұрын
Aimée Goudreau-Côté oh definitely agree about the panic feelings! I am starting a low buy, too, here on my KZbin channel and the immense impulse I have to browse Ulta, Sephora, HauteLook, and elsewhere to see if there is anything I want/need/could be MISSING OUT ON COME JANUARY 1 is HUGE! No, I am NOT going to DIE if I don’t buy the newest face lotion to hit Sephora or get the latest lipgloss from Fenty Beauty that trendmood1 just posted about... but I keep finding myself browsing trying to find things I don’t need and likely don’t even actually WANT just to make sure I won’t be missing out next year. Ugh. Disgusted with myself TBH.

I actually did a no buy in 2019 without realizing it. I was working on curbing frivolous spending which I was so proud of. I only bought replacements for items I use all the time. I ended up with more money I could put in my savings and saw how much money I wasted on things that didn’t add any value to my life. So glad I found your channel, great content.

I decided to start my no buy at the end of 2018 (December 1st) instead of January 2019 exactly because of reason number 2. I decided in November that I was going to do a no buy. Then I found myself making lists of all the things I thought I needed to buy before I began. I realized that was defeating the purpose for me because the mentality of "stocking up" and "backups" is something that contributes to my destructive spending habits. Especially during sales. So I decided to start early and I'm happy that I did. I'd just suggest that if someone is starting a no buy to think about the reasons they are doing it when making decisions about how to prepare for it.

You are so so right about it being your choice to succeed. I'm gonna go ahead and compare shopping addiction to drug addiction for a minute cause I'm recovering from both. Whether it's making an impulse purchase or deciding to get high nobody else is making those decisions for you, no matter how bad you feel. We might be powerless over the fact that we have an addiction, but we are not powerless over our own actions. If you relapse it's because you chose to.

Around the end of 2016 I found a facebook group called MakeUp Use-it-Up. I found it through the KZbinr "Elle is For Living". The focus is on using what you have. Since then, I have done so much better with my addiction to Makeup and beauty products. I have stayed on a "Low-Buy" since I found them. It's a fun and very supportive group. I think several of us are fans of yours and have mentioned your channel in the discussions. The one thing I say if anyone asks about using their collection is always to make an inventory of what you already have. The first time I did it, I was finding so many bottles and tubes of stuff in drawers and cabinets and under my sink...it was astonishing, all that I forgot I had when I kept purchasing more. Some type of inventory was such a key for me, I did mine in an Excel spreadsheet and kept it front and center to remind myself of what I didn't need to buy, but some people do it by hand or in their phone or even by taking a photo. :) Your makeup in today's video is amazing!! Gorgeous as always. xo

Started a no-buy last august. I didn't want to wait until the new year. Unsubscribing from things really helped me so much. I've noticed in the last few weeks I've started browsing some IG accounts again just out of curiosity and I've found myself not being interested at all. I'm just now starting to watch some beauty creators again. And if I find anything triggering I feel confident in my ability to either turn off again or just stop watching and move on with my day. I've also found such joy in my existing collection. I've also found so much joy in old hobbies like reading again. Buying books wasn't part of my no-buy, it was just makeup. And I've started buying second hand books and I don't feel guilty at all.

But I haven't finished a makeup category yet so I have been unable to repurchase. I never really made any rules but knew that I wasn't in need of anything and I can definitely carry over into 2019. I don't know if it was because of my no buy but the sales have been insane this year. Sephora had multiple friends and family. I remember 2 sales a year. Ulta had multiple 20% off coupons and on prestige brands recently and extensions. I wonder if they are seeing the no buy trend and trying to stay on top of it. I try to unsubscribe to emails but they always seem to creep back in to inbox!

Interesting stuff. I'm not planning a no-buy, but I'm definitely going to do a low buy. I'm pretty much going to be starting it this year. I'm a Sephora Rouge and whatever TF the middle tier (used to be the high tier) at Ulta. Both companies have been sending out points and 20 percent off coupons, and dollar off stuff, and rewards, and all kinds of enticements since October, and TBH, I'm just shopped out. Want to see how bad it is? I have a $15 off anything gift card from Ulta, and I had a reward of 350 points, plus 20 percent off prestige brands, and I couldn't think of anything I wanted enough to spend $35. I have enough shampoo, body wash, lotion, soap, and makeup - ohhh yes, makeup! - to last me until the next millennium! I don't know if this is how people get when they're ready to say "enough!", but it's going to be a long, long time before I buy anything. How much highlighter can one human being accrue?? I just barely crossed the line into renewing Rouge at Sephora. I had enough points to get a $100 GC, and that is going to sit there until there is something worth getting (or for 90 days, when it expires.) Unless I start buying products at Sephora for resale, I absolutely cannot think how it is possible I will EVER spend enough to requalify as Rouge for next year. I always feel vaguely unsettled when I watch your videos. Make no mistake, I enjoy them, and I like your personality; you're very good at what you do. I think it has something to do with the idea of making a commitment like that that unnerves me. What is going to work for me is just focusing on this disgust I have with TOO much STUFF. I want to wait a few months to see if any of my actual joy with skincare and cosmetics comes back, and then see if any brands or companies have come up with something interesting. So FWIW, thanks, Hannah. You're a better woman than me by swearing off buying for an entire year, but OTOH, you've been an inspiration - if a somewhat nerve-wracking one! :)
@OpportunisticOmnivore6 жыл бұрын
katylake212 what might work for you and INTENSIFY that unsettled feeling if you do find yourself getting weak and wanting another $30 lipstick when you have 50 lipsticks is to do an inventory of that category and see how much you have. Further, if you still are tempted, add up the AMOUNT YOUVE SPENT on all your lipsticks (or whatever category is tempting you) and that will probably shock/disgust you into deciding you do NOT need whatever that thing is. This is a technique I plan to do myself. I have done an inventory and have videos and photos of my whole collection so if I DO get weak and decide I NEED something and the inventory video/photos don’t help, I’m doing the math of how much freaking money I’ve spent on that type of item and scaring the crap out of myself to get me turning from that impulse and getting back into no buy mode. I’ve been filming my inventory for my KZbin channel and, man, that has certainly heightened my willpower a LOT not to go crazy splurging right before my low buy starts!
@zaria57856 жыл бұрын
katylake212 Your comment resonates with me so much. I get those same emails from ULTA and Sephora and I'll ask friends and family if they want to use my discount for anything they need. I still shop, but not for myself and I now look a year ahead to see if there's a good deal on a bday gift that someone whom I love would enjoy. When I went through my no-buy in 2018 within the 1st month I got suckered into a 75% off sale because I convinced myself that I needed a couple of purple eyeliners (since it was the Pantone color of the year) to complete my eye look because I wanted to pan my purple eyeshadow. If I hadn't made that purchase I would have been fine in hindsight. I've finished using up 3 eyeliners this year and none of those were the purple ones I bought. How much of my purple eyeshadow did I use? Only 1/3! 🤦🏻♀️ Also, I gave myself my birthday month to purchase replacements. Since my bday is in June that gave me 6 months to plan better. Also, I gave myself a budget. And I told all of my friends and family that I was going on a no-buy year. I wanted them to hold me accountable. I think once I announced it - my goal became my reality. Wishing you the best and rooting for you to try a no-buy in 2019 on a month to month basis. ✌🏼
@katylake2126 жыл бұрын
@@OpportunisticOmnivore The unsettled feeling is the vague idea of NOT buying anything for an entire year (although doing it for several months doesn't bother me at all.) The disgusted feeling is the way you feel when it's a holiday and you ate EVERYTHING. You are so full and you feel absolutely sick, and the sight of food makes you want to vomit. Lipstick is my passion. What makes me sick, truly sick, is that I have SO many lipsticks, and I couldn't even tell you how many are dupes for one another. Sure, there's a shade difference, or a formula difference, but no one but me would be able to tell. Funny how you don't intend to buy cosmetics that are so similar to what you already have, but it makes sense. You buy what you like. The problem comes when you KEEP buying it! I'm not horrified by the amount of money I've spent. I know what I spend. I can afford it. What bothers me is what a waste it all is since one person cannot possibly USE all this stuff. I think there are all kinds of ways one can tame one's spending. Hannah's is one way. I admire her tenacity. But there are other ways to do it. You have to find what works for you. The goal is to stop buying what you probably don't even really want, and to use the stuff you already have. My disgust at all the STUFF I haven't even touched yet is going to be more than enough to carry my makeup moratorium through the spring!

@@zaria5785 Thank you! I appreciate your tale of no-buy! I love that it's so real; one of the things that doesn't work for me, my personality type, is guilt. Nothing is more likely to make me want to do the opposite of anything than someone trying to guilt me into change. I have to make a rational choice of my own accord, and I respect other people who do the same. You feel ill enough when you think of all the stuff you don't want to buy anymore. IMHO, it's just cruel trying to guilt people into giving up a bad habit. Just doesn't work, and it's cruel, besides.

katylake212 -Thanks for replying. When I re-read my prior comment I can understand how that last sentence came off as forceful even if that's not my intention. I'm actually just getting excited (in a nerdy way I guess) about strategizing my own game plan for 2019. I take my no-buy on a month to month basis because it's what helps me otherwise this transition would be painful too painful. It's been my only method of relief from anxiety. So I have to distract myself from shopping. I literally bought a desk calendar so I can fill it with activities (like reading my books that are collecting dust) just so I don't otherwise walk the malls and be tempted to buy unnecessary stuff. I do well with schedules and lists. I also understand that not everyone has my problem. Anyway my credit card isn't too happy with the abuse it has taken in recent years. I want to do better because I know I am capable. My spending habits is one area that personally I can stand to face some hard truths. Not everyone has my problem or is in my situation and I get that. Anyway thanks for your time. ✌🏼

Thank you for filming this! This video is full of amazing advice. I tried to do a low buy last year, started my channel in March for this reason, and then did appallingly badly. I found your channel several weeks ago when you were on the Half Cousins podcast talking about your no buy. Your guidance about making specific rules is huge. This is how I failed last year, no specific rules and guidelines. Also, your perspective that the only way you fail at a no buy is if you LET yourself fail, if you are not hard enough with yourself and strong enough to NOT give into impulses and buy stuff! It is true. I was weak on myself in 2018 with regards to shopping. I see now that the reasons I gave at the time for letting myself buy (I can afford to buy the thing, I don’t need to stop shopping to get rid of credit card debt or anything like that, it’s just one palette... which became 40 palettes!!! I haven’t tried that brand and need to for my channel, I want to buy all those things to review on my channel, my skin NEEDS to try this brand new product because it could cure my acne! Haha yeah right!) were garbage. The ACTUAL reasons I was being soft on myself and letting myself “cheat” my low buy to the sum of thousands of dollars was because I actually didn’t have enough willpower to go around. I am in a job I loathe, working for a person who I despise (I have been actively working on changing jobs, though, since August), so making it through the day in this job, DOING a good job at it and staying patient, polite, appropriate, and not just going postal and ranting and raving and, frankly just freaking QUITTING, is a challenge. That is not something I have been able to discuss on MY channel because I don’t really want it out there in a public forum where it could get to my company. But I thought I may be safe enough venting in a comment here. Further, my husband and I started Aktins in January and switched to Keto in June. These have both been very big changes for us and massive tests of willpower. We both look better and, more importantly, feel better with this big habit change but it does test me each day to NOT cheat and eat garbage. The same techniques that I have discovered and used to stay on Keto for the last 6 months I think will be VERY important to adapt and use in my low buy this year. It kicks off on New Years’ Day and I am very excited to not TRY to have a low buy year but to HAVE a low buy year.

I've been using this time leading up to Jan 1st as a soft open as you've suggested and it's funny because I keep saying I HOPE I'll succeed, so point number 8 was exactly what I needed to hear! One thing I learned from this soft open that might be useful to share is that if anyone else is doing a replacements only no-buy with a rule about being able to buy something after running out of all items in a category for makeup/skincare, I've found it worth it to lay out the categories beforehand so I'm not making up new categories as an excuse to shop midway through the no-buy. So, for me, I laid out the steps in my skincare and haircare routines as categories, as well as makeup subcategories. The categories are personalized to me and what I want to pare down to. For example, I have 3 existing blush categories (overtly warm, overtly cool, neutral) that I've sorted all my blushes into, and I'm not going to run out of any of those categories this year, but it gives me clarity and reassurance to have done that (i.e. to have given myself room that if, in the unlikely event that I finish the 3 cool-toned blushes I own in 2019, I'm not stuck with only orange blush for looks). However, this also makes sure that if I finish my one magenta blush sometime during the year, I cannot suddenly invent/decide I have a "magenta blush" category that I can buy a replacement for, because I've already laid out the categories and there are still 2 other blushes in the "overtly cool" category that magenta falls under. It'll also be fun as the year progresses to see which items I prefer in certain categories or if I can go without entire categories (like maybe I realize I'm fine not owning any cool-toned blushes at all!). I can't wait for my full no-buy year, and even though I know it'll be difficult, I also know it'll be worth it because I've seen the incredible ways in which you've grown and changed and transformed your life. I can't wait for all of us embarking on this journey to experience that for ourselves, and I'm so thankful to you for inspiring us and sharing your entire journey! 💛

I love your hair in this video. Your last video about your overspending after the 2016 election really resonated with me. I felt like since the outcome was so depressing (speaking for myself), I would make it less depressing by focusing on better myself - essentially spending more on self-care to be the best version of myself. Somehow it turned into a habitual habit of buying things constantly, and obsessing about what new beauty and skincare release was coming out. My boyfriend joked that our bathroom closet was like a mini Sephora with all the huge stash of unopened makeup and skincare products, so I jokingly searched on KZbin "How to stop buying makeup" and that lead me to search "no buy challenge" and lo and behold I found your channel and the rest is history. Well, more like a historical repository of my addiction and bad spending habits and how I need to face my trauma, accept them, and make better decisions going forward. I really found a lot of inspiration and support from your channel. I'm going to do a hybrid low-buy/no-buy in 2019. Thank you for being vulnerable with us during your no-buy year and inspiring us to be our true, authentic self.

Hi! I am one of the people who is triggered by store emails and certain types of beauty social media content. I am less than a month into a no-buy 7 months and I needed to unsubscribe because this early on, the temptation that these present is too strong. I have also found that if I indulge in fantasy shopping online behavior, it is helpful to always empty my cart after. This way it is easier to forget whatever items seemed interesting at the time and to also feel less compelled to complete a transaction.

The last section of this video is really great...for years I have been trying to simplify my life, get out of debt, stop shopping etc and it's been super hit or miss - mostly miss. I usually describe this dilemma as knowing the answer but not knowing the equation. Which without knowing, you can't find your why, and you will lose your momentum because you didn't know why or what you were committing to in the first place. When the pain sets in from denying yourself the things you used to medicate yourself with, if you don't know why you are doing it, you cannot talk yourself out of making bad choices. Thank you for being so vulnerable and honest in a public space...I think you might be one of the first people talking about this stuff that has ever really gotten to the heart of the matter. Well done.

I have decided to do a no buy year. My rules are no clothes, that’s my problem, no accessories and no homewares. I’ve written a four pages of rules, my husband is on board and I am going to video my outcomes and journey on utube. I know I’m late to this channel, but Hannah I have watched all your main videos and your journey over the last couple of months and you have truly inspired me to kick my butt and stop waisting money. Im starting on October 1st, this year being 2022 and finishing October 1st 2023. I don’t have any subscribers, but recording my journey and watching it back will be like keeping a diary. Thank you 🙏 you are awesome 🤩

Looking back on this video over a year later, I've finally decided I'm ready to do a no buy, and I'm starting now, even though we're several months into the year (my no buy, my rules lol). I think I had somehow convinced myself that a no buy would mean I'd have to completely sacrifice the joy of buying beautiful things. I was deluding myself into thinking that you can't experience pleasure when you've actively set limits for yourself, which is a completely irrational, dangerous mindset. Sure, I may be denying myself the intense dopamine rush when I impulse buy (although this experience isn't even that pleasant, and actually laden with anxiety). But I will be allowing myself to actually appreciate the few items that I do buy/already own, and to derive far more pleasure from them. Also, putting a halt to the constant stimulation and influx of shiny new things will help me figure out which items ARE actually adding value and which aren't.

I decided to start with a low buy for a month. When I succeeded with that, I tried a no buy for a month as well. I just kept telling myself to use what I already have. Should I break down, I will allow myself to splurge on one item that I cannot stop thinking about. So far, it has been working and it’s almost coming to a year now without me breaking down. Surprisingly, it gets easier with every passing month and I feel lighter after using up what I have. Thank you for your advice and inspiring us..💕

I'm starting my no-buy in march. I'm going to do it for a year. I'm writing this comment simply to make myself accountable. I'm also writing this, because the language in these no-buy videos frustrate me. They only talk about "the new year" and January, failing to mention that you can decide to start your no-buy at whatever part of the year. I have an addiction to pretty things, especially clothing items. I struggle with insecurities and depression, and buying clothes gives me an instant rush. It's sick and sad and I want to break the habit. I know that the only way for me is to go cold turkey. I've tried to "buy less" or become a minimalist, but that just isn't where I'm at yet. I'm going to allow myself to spend on experiences, but not things.

I have always been frugal and consequently manage my spending. I never buy the IT item and had actually thought I was wrong. Prosperous 2019 y’all 👍🏼

Great suggestions Hannah, your comment make your own rules and of not thinking that a successful no buy is based on luck really resonated with me. I’m on a low buy because cutting cold turkey would be hard for me. However I decided to stick to my rules of low buy. Your idea of makeup play time has helped me a lot. I set time aside every week for play time. I have also decided to have challenges with myself to used the color cosmetics I have. This week is, I will only use 1 eyeshadow palette a week and I have to make it work for every day (I wear makeup everyday). My goal is to get to know the palette and what I like about it. Similar to your comments on past videos. My other challenge is to figure out why I bought so many lipsticks and blushes. So I’m comparing them all to see what is the common denominator. I love doing this on make up play time. I will continue to watch your past videos to look for support on my journey. Thank you Hannah. 💕💕💕

I do love skincare and makeup, but I don't think I need to do a no buy for example. However, I still found your content very relevant and motivating. I love that you made a years worth of content without having the "trendiest" item or newest release. I never felt like you were (even subletly) selling me an item. It's really refreshing to see on this platform, especially since a lot of the content on here is basically an ad (regardless if that is the intent). Your channel was suggested by another subscriber because I have been on a no buy since 9-1-2018 and plan on continuing. I really like how honest everything you say is. I have been thinking to start a no-buy for myself, and every time I was thinking about the different aspects of what I'm allowed to buy and what I'm not allowed my brain will sort of stat making plots of "what if" scenarios. So uou have helped me a lot to see that this is actually okay and how I can overcome this issue. Also I agree that there os no point in unsubscribing from sells emails, because if a person wants to go through no-buy they want to become more strict and disciplined, so that emails - getting them, looking through them and resisting the temptation would be sort of a reward for the job well done. Thank you for your honrsty in this and all your videos. You are great!

This feels and sounds like what I imagine an AA/recovery meeting sounds like. You drove the point home beautifully that only WE are responsible and WE are the ones that choose and have the control. I would also like to add that we keep promises to others but too willing to bend the rules for ourselves. I hear that somewhere and it struck a chord. It's important to keep the promises we make to ourselves and build that trust with ourselves. That's how I started working out regularly. I made a promise that I would go for a run 3 times a week, it's realistic and I've been keeping it for 3 months!

I’ve just found your channel and am working my way through your videos. It’s made me realise I need to do a no-buy year for 2019 as my spending, especially on makeup and skincare is ridiculous. It has got me into serious debt and it’s stressful but I still convince myself I can buy more stuff. I am going to use the rules similar to yours in that I have to use up a whole category before I can buy something new and am including makeup, skincare, clothes and homeware. Currently I’m in the panic stage thinking what do I need to get before I can’t buy what I want rather than what I need but I am going to make an effort not to just buy a tonne of stuff before the end of the year. This video has been very helpful. I have been reading the comments and I see a little piece of me and my experiences in every one of them. I am going a no buy. I do need to set down some rules and I am working on those this week. Currently I am $158 dollars away from Rouge and I am already Platinum at Ulta. The urge to get to Rouge is pretty strong but I think to myself - I will not be shopping at Sephora next year at all so why try and get the perks of which 90% I don't take advantage of anyway. This no buy is just one change I am making for next year and my accountability partner and I have already been discussing how we can remain positive and reach our goals in 2019. This will be a challenge for me since I shop for reasons other than a need for something. Now I have to direct those behaviors in a more positive direction instead of just shopping to feel better about a situation. I wish everyone the best of luck to however you choose to make 2019 your best year yet. Thanks Hannah for putting yourself out there and being so transparent with this process. I look forward to see what is next for you in the next year.

I’m really feeling the urge to panic buy. I can’t yet because my family has a rule that you can’t buy anything for yourself between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I did ask for makeup for Christmas, so maybe that will help the urge. I think part of it is I have a small collection so far (4 eyeshadow palettes), although my developing patterns mean that I have bought all of those palettes in the last year, which is why I am going on a no-buy. I’ll keep your advice in mind although I might still get something between Christmas and the new year. After watching this video, I’ll make sure it’s a lot less than I was initially thinking.

I appreciate your tips. I'm on a no-buy for 2019, having way overbought in 2018 (makeup & beauty, specifically). I have decided that I am allowed to replace products I use up (which will no doubt be skincare and personal care items, since I can't imagine using up the makeup I have anytime in my lifetime), but will otherwise not purchase. I have also decided that I will continue to receive emails from Ulta and Sephora because I want to get to the point where I can read them and be in the habit of critically thinking whether I really, really need something or not (usually not). My intent this year is to enjoy what I have instead of continuing to accumulate more.

Gift cards. I usually get them for Christmas and my birthday, which is the 27th. I have made the rule that I can buy the Urban Decay Born to Run palette with them, because I do want to add more color to my eyeshadow collection. Otherwise, it's replace only. December has been my "soft opening" before I start the hard no-buy January 1st. I am going to keep the Sephora and Ulta apps on my phone for the reasons that you listed. Ever since you mentioned about this video, I was waiting eagerly! These tips are very very useful. I have 4 categories - Makeup, skincare, hair products and daily wear clothes. I am giving little space for lip balms and acne patches. Clothes - only replacement when needed. Make-up n hair care I don't need anything. I am planning to do shop my stash every 15 days or one month. That way I use up all the products. It's slowly working. I have managed to stay away from couple of beauty websites here at India. Christmas sale going on! Usually, I will buy something by creating a need n buy thinking I am making wise decision. But this time, I opened, saw everything. Funnily didn't feel any urge to buy. I am checking daily deals at Amazon. So far added to cart n deleted 😂😂 I am planning to finish my colouring books in the time I spend "window" shopping (bought adult colouring books to relax myself couple of years ago and barely used 🤦🤦) Baby steps 😄 Thank you Hannah 😘😘

This was a wonderful video and something I will definitely revisit. You are so right about other parts of your life changing. It’s been a beautiful thing. The most important point I think you made was number 8. ONLY YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOUR NO BUY. Leave no room to fail. Succeed and set yourself up for success. And you know the most beautiful thing about keeping a promise to yourself like that?? It allows you to keep MORE promises to yourself. I stuck with a training program and I went from zero to a 10k. Once I did that I KNEW I could do a no buy, and I have. I KNEW I could do a Whole30, and today is day 31. Keeping promises to yourself if one of the most powerful things you can do because it teaches you that you are worth it! Edit: PS. Your hair is on POINT in this one girl. I’m on day 10 and I’m going to wash today only because it’s so gross from so much running.

Have you read any of Gretchen Rubin's books. She has her Happiness Project series but her latest books are about habits and strategies we use to trick ourselves out of new habits(Better Than Before) and a personality tendency framework ( The Four Tendencies). The Four Tendencies was a huge aha read for me as her framework deals with how we respond to Inner and outer expectations. Also, so helpful in understanding other people in our lives. I am all for self exploration and understand OURSELVES. Your year has been a deep dive into that and I find it inspiring. Going beyond the "I want to do this" to the "WHY do I want to do this", from the "I don't want to do this" to the "WHY do I keep doing this" is how we can understand and then change. Plus, you have mentioned many times "sitting with the feeling of wanting" and riding it out is so profound. People need to let themselves feel and just because you have the feeling doesn't mean you have to ACT on that feeling.

Your approach is on a deeper level. The roots of this craziness are understood then worked upon them. I'll look for that book, thanks for the recommendation. 😘😘🙏

You’re right about willpower. My main problem areas are Books, Makeup and Skincare. Last year I imposed a ‘one in, two out’ policy on my book buying and it was really successful. Not only did it slow me down and leave me with fewer books overall at the end of the year, but it also meant I could buy what I wanted, there was just a consequence. This year I’m going to do the same again and I’m going low buy on Beauty. Replacements only with a budget to buy what I want around my birthday.

thank you for this video Hannah, all your videos have help me to decide to go on a no-buy on 2019 for makeup, skincare/bodycare, books and clothes/shoes. The rules: I can replace items which I don't have replacement (as you), I can buy 4 books a year as I have a subscription on a club and I have to buy one book every 3 months. I can buy something if I receive a gift card (Christmas or my Birthday). I can (if I want) buy 3 things beauty-related on 2019, no replacement items. If my spending with the gift card is higher as the amount on the gift card, it will go on this 3 items. sorry for my bad English... I have already began my no-buy on makeup this month, I know I can do it for an entire year. I have debts to pay and I would like to take violin lesson, but I don't have currently the money every month because I am overspending in all areas of my life :( my husband will encourage me to be straight with myself :) have a nice day Hannah, and THANK YOU again for your positive vibes in the beauty community ♥ I wish you a wonderful Christmas period and hope you will have some vacation :-)

I wont lie, I have been avoiding watching your No Buy videos because I didn’t want to come to terms with the fact that this is something I need to do. I have a few problems, the biggest being $2000 in credit card debt due to my unregulated shopping habits and not enough income to pay it off. My second issue is the fact that I LOVE having baths and using bath bombs.. Which are expensive. I have decided it’s a No Buy year for Makeup/Skincare except for replenishing, and the same goes for body and haircare. However the bath bombs are where it’s hard. I think I will limit myself to a certain number or a budget per month. I really needed this series/video. I’ve been anxiety ridden all holidays thinking about this debt and wondering if I was the only one who had a shopping addiction like this. I felt ashamed, stupid, and alone until I watched this video. I’m still disappointed in myself, but I’m excited to push myself and change my mindset. I’m scared too, but I think that’s a good thing. Thank you for this.

You are not alone, Allison! It's ok! Once you start making a plan and sticking to your rules you will feel a tremendous sense of relief, better than new things and maybe even better than baths :) I was a lush addict for a long time when I lived in a cold climate and I understand the need. Budgeting is a great idea, and maybe also having some backup bath stuff, like Dr Teals's Salts from the drugstore, so that you can keep having baths as often as you want and just keep the bath bombs for special baths?

This is like the 7th video I have watched of yours. I absolutely LOVE the intro. I am serisously looking at my overspending categories. (Hair care, skin care, makeup, grocery store, home wares) And looking at what I can do in 2019 to get these categories under control. THANKS for being such a bright spot of hope on KZbin, and sharing your journey with us!
