How to do a Phoenix Spin Tutorial on the pole. A blind grab like spin transition into a twisted grip handspring. This is an advanced pole transition but.....you do not need to have a solid handspring before starting on the prep for this advanced transition. I would encourage you to watch the tutorial and start working on the spin prep for the Phoenix if you have strong one arm spins. Then when you have mastered your handspring the two parts will come together to make a beautiful phoenix spin transition to handspring. For those of you that have a solid handspring but have struggled with this transition, take a step back and focus on just the spin prep. It is developing the spin and timing of the first part that is crucial to making the overall transition work relatively effortlessly (otherwise it ends up being a straight up deadlift).

Once you are able to do one arm spins start working on the spin portion even if you aren't ready for the handspring portion. I'm looking forward to seeing it someday!

This video breaks this spin down very well into all the little steps that go into this spin. And it gives excellent advice : DO NOT RUSH ANY OF THE STEPS BEFORE MOVING ON TO THE NEXT STEP!! I did just that and it was not good. I wish this video would have been available when I was teaching myself this spin.

It does take time and practice but focus on the spin and improving that. The spin is the most important part in the beginning.

LOVE this spin! Plus this spin has a sort of sentimental value for me as well because it shares its name with a bald eagle that I used to care for at the wildlife center where I used to work, and that eagle and I had a special bond and so when I found out there was a spin also called Phoenix I went in to work and told him that I was going to learn that spin just for him. Unfortunately before I was able to successfully pull it off he was killed, and I made it my mission to accomplish this spin in his honor. Soooo, I taught myself to dead-lift into my handspring and I was fearful of kicking/sweeping into my handspring (back injury from years prior is why I was afraid to tweak my back if I swept into it) so I guess from what it sounds like in this video I am doing a dead-lift twisted grip Phoenix. Maybe? I still tap my toe to get up into this move and I want to not tap my toe, I know I am strong enough to do it and I know I don't have the "tick-tock" motion of a straight line in front and behind pole, I know I am getting out and around pole correctly, but watching this video I think I need to get my splayed legs way way way sooner than I have been and that may help. Thanks for posting this video.

Any chance you have a true grip Phoenix tutorial as this one is great but I struggle with twisted grip due to shoulder mobility x

Not in my free KZbin tutorials, no. The spin concept covered in the twisted grip phoenix is the same regardless of whether the final handspring is in cup, true or twisted. It's then the rotation and timing that changes with each grip.

What area do you need the most strength in for this invert ?

You should already have a strong handspring for a full phoenix but you can start working on the spin and hand placement part before mastering your handspring.

@@Elizabeth_BFit I'm not at that level yet, but if I ever feel confident and secure enough I would definitely try to learn it. I can't do my hand spring on my other side, and my reverse grab is very close to the pole. Once I fix those issues, and have an instructor to spot me (currently I am self studying pole), i would definitely try.

Hi, I can finally Phoenix! But like twice a month I’m ripping my calluses open doing it. What do you use on your hands/calluses to keep them from tearing??

Congratulations on your phoenix!! For calluses I don't have much of an issue with them anymore but there was a time when I did and found it's best to file them down just a little bit. You don't want to completely take them off because it's like baby skin all over again underneath but if you let them grow to their full thickness they are actually more likely to come off in a huge chunk, then exposing that baby skin all over again.

I can handspring and deadlift but im still having issues! I get halfway through this put cant push myself up into ayesha! Any tips or where i may be going wrong?

My Shoulders are fucked. I cant spin while holdingvwith one arm ...nor can I even do the ballerina. I can handspring into a butterfly...but...I try not to do it

I have terrible shoulders too as a result of degenerative joint disease combined with abuse to them back when I was a competitive fighter. I do regular shoulder stabilization and strengthening exercises for them to keep them as functional as possible. I'd highly recommend adding an off the pole regular maintenance routine for your shoulders. Are you currently working with a physical therapist or kinesiologist?

Ayesha/handspring...same/same... the phoenix is the name of the transition spin that takes us up into the ayesha/handspring. And different studios/ people use ayesha vs handspring.
