A really good exercise for this i s really just doing the same thing on the floor. Roll over to right side, one hand supporting, one above your head. Then, straighten one of your legs on the floor. The leg facing the ceiling should bend, then develop to your head. Be sure to keep it turned out.

what's the turn called when you keep one leg extended out by your hip & then turn ?

@lewis72 it's because a bar of music is normally 4 beats long, but dance is normally in phrases of 2 bars i.e. 8 beats. So the 5678 is to set the tempo of the dance and so people know when to start on the first beat.

I'm assuming there is, but is there anything similar in dance to the "Memmel" in gymnastics? It's a double spin in a held split. And your foot is right in front of your face.

@Clara Foster I'm sorry I was giving the basic action not teaching a dance class. I'm not a dance teacher, I'm a student and stating how I was taught them. I find it easier to think about them like this. So please note, I know what fouettés are I've been dancing for 11 years, when your sub correcting people, don't be so rude about it? K thanks bye.

@lewis72 You are supposed to start doing the skill on 1 (the beginning of the eight count) so they give you 5-6-7-8 to give you preparation to do the skill like there was another 8-count before it. If they just started on one, you would be rushed to start and in large groups, everybody would be starting at different times.

@1SkyIsTheLimit1 Ah, OK. I guess that that makes sense. My sister's been doing dance for years and when I used to get dragged along years ago, I always wondered why the counting seemed odd. I was always into athlectics, so only had to deal with "On your marks - Get set - Go !"

@agyfrejacharl spotting is picking a spot in front of you, and making sure you watch it the whole time while you turn to keep your balance. look up spotting for dance and click the second video that comes up. it'll show you how to do it

A fouette is a plie* crosse, open a la second. It only does half of a GRANDE ronde* de jambe en l'air*. A ronde de jambe en l'air is when the leg goes to passe then to second then back to passe. When correcting people, please know what you are talking about.

It's not all that bad, but it definitely wasn't the best, the turn needs to be more controlled and balanced. This was still helpful, though! =)

God, I hate competition trick and turns, there is no technique going into this, no wonder the girl cannot perform the pirouette correctly, most of her central weigh (her pelvic area) is tilted completely to the side... Who could ever expect her to do this right? Even the preparation is a disaster, who preps in a SIDE LUNGE!?

*Fouette, and no It's not. A fouette turn is your leg going from pile, second, and then doing a rande de jambe mon lair. While spotting.

depends..... actually im nOt really a "beginner" only in my second year of jazz but im advanced went from rec to comp in 1 year and have good flexibility and turns so.... i guess i dont count but for people who hav never danced then ya far too advanced for beginners. AND NO I DIDNT TYPE THIS JUST TO BRAG I TYPED THIS AS I WAS THINKING IT SO KEEP ANY RUDE COMMENTS TO UR SELF

It's not a kick spin..it's a side isolation turn; kick spin your leg is in a bow and arrow position but with both hands on the foot. Get educated before you go around talking smack, or at least know what it's called. Have a nice day:)
