Like this so beginners see it: it is MUCH easier to turn the motor over by hand if you remove the spark plugs so that you are not fighting the compression of the engine. Side note you shouldn't use a swivel on a torque wrench unless it is a constant velocity (cv) as you wont get a true torque reading. Overall great vid should really help guys that are just starting to get into the higher levels of maintenance!
@Shimmoda6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree and it’s the only torque wrench I had at the time I purchased a much better one to do the valves on my rsv4

Great choice of maintenance topics !! I'll bet most riders don't even know these need to be done on a set maintenance schedule .. Bad Ass The Muscle Biker ... Loving it !!
@Shimmoda7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was always confused what actually happened in a valve adjustment when I first started riding so hopefully this will answer most people's questions! Also the spark plugs were within the resistance. I did have my throttle body module go out but I replaced that other than that it's been gold!
@NJOwensGoFastAngelYYZ7 жыл бұрын
So how's she run now ?? Tight tappets steal performance and cut into the life of the valve train substantially .. I know every time I've seen a motor go thru shimming it hummed like a song afterward .. Plus that quickshifter too tho !! Dude you're falling in ZX love all over again huh ???

Loving the DIY bike maintenance man please keep it up. Great reference when working on a bike a home. Is there a specific kind of brand brake cleaner? I hear it's great for general cleaning on the bike. Like if you spill a little lube or oil or sum and the brake cleaner will get it all off.

@The Muscle Biker Thanks for helpful vid man:) Question!!! I bought an 01 gixxxeer & its runnin onna str8 pipe fml shouldn't of bought it like that. Should I replace the 800$ pipes (too much rn) AND THEN give my bike a proper tune up (adjust the valves, test compression, synchronize throttles, replace spark plugs & air filter, etc)?!! Bc even after a tune-up wouldnt my bike still be running lean bc of the str8-pipe thus still damaging my engine slowly but surely? Anyones input would be great:/ Thanks in advance!

Nice vid man. Any specific reason you went with iridium plugs?
@Shimmoda7 жыл бұрын
+Clark Brent they are more performance oriented
@ClarkBrent7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get that, but any specific reason? I have a set in my ZX6R right now. Probably gonna use NGK CR9E's once it comes time to replace them again. They just run too warm for SoCal weather, plus I'm not running NOS or anything too crazy under the hood...err gas tank (?) of my bike that honestly requires iridium plugs.
@Shimmoda7 жыл бұрын
+Clark Brent yeah you're probably right plus they dont last as long so I'll have to replace them as soon as I add on 7k miles. I don't really have a specific reason just for performance haha
@ClarkBrent7 жыл бұрын
Haha no worries bud, not trying to even hint that it was a mistake to use them. I think they actually last longer in cars than normal plugs, but not sure if it's the same on bikes. I personally went with them myself to see if I noticed any difference, and honestly other than the temp increase, I haven't noticed much of a difference. If you have a Power Commander, you might get more out of them than I did, though.

Total complication. Buy a Yamaha V Star 650 or 1100 and they have adjustable valve tappets. Take the tank off take the tappet covers off and adjust the tappet clearance. An easy job which is easy to do in about 20 minutes. You do not have to take the cams out or any thing like that,as there are NO SHIMS. This is one reason why I bought my V Star 650, it is just so easy to adjust the valves. It is also air cooled so no water or radiators or water pumps, just simple air cooling. There is NO fuel injection on any Yamaha V Star 650. They still have a carburetor which I can adjust any time that I want myself. You can take the spark plugs out easy without having to take any other part off the motorcycle to get to get to them. The spark plugs just screw into each side of the engine.
@Shimmoda5 жыл бұрын
Why would I switch to an old outdated non sportbike? Taking off the cams and measuring shims takes literally an hour I don’t think it would be worth the switch
@7316bobe5 жыл бұрын
@@Shimmoda I had a 1980 Yamaha XJ650 that I had to do the shims on from time to time. I sure did hate that job. I switched from a sport bike to my V Star 650 Cruiser. The cruiser is a slower motorcycle but at my age of 66 it suits me well. Slow and very comfortable with the old fashioned easy to work on engine. I like to do things myself and then I know that it is right. If I was younger I would buy another sport bike a 1971 Honda 750 4 because they had adjustable tappets and a single cam. I owned 2 of them and they were great motorcycles and easy to work on. Catch you down the road from old Bob.
