Steps:
1. Carve off a section of hair.
2. Using Jumbo Braid, create a simple extension braid with the natural hair.
3. After a few turns, split the natural hair and extension hair in two.
4. Combine one of each together and continue braiding.
5. Once the braid is slightly longer than the natural hair, backcomb a small amount of the fiber so that the braid does not unravel.
6. If you are doing a full head, braid the rest of the hair in this manner before moving onto the next step.
7. Use a latch hook to pull extension fiber through the braid at the base.
8. Put the two legs of the fiber together and add a bit of backcombing.
9. Wrap the fiber around the the braid creating a casing.
10. Once past the braid, backcomb all the fiber together so the transition is as smooth as possible.
11. Backcomb the extension fiber to the tips.
12. Starting at the base, twist and use a steam method to seal each dreadlock.

Kanekalon is manufactured to be heat set. The fiber doesn’t melt with steam. To remove them, simply cut below the wrap, unwrap the base then unbraid the hair. Really simple, actually.

It really depends on how fast your hair grows. Typically they start looking a little less awesome around the 1.5 to 2 month mark - but as a general rule of thumb - no extensions should stay in longer than 3 months. After 3 months, your natural hair needs some good maintenance - but you can put them right back in after a good brush and wash of the natural hair. :)

Yes, you can use a flat iron method, but wrap it with a damp towel so you don't scorch the outside of the fiber.

It is a kanekalon jumbo braid. Kanekalon is the type of plastic that the hair is made from, Jumbo braid is a bulky texture braiding hair. You can find it on our website at doctoredlocks.

For synthetic dreads it will not matter your natural hair texture. There is a flat iron method, but these would be made before the installation and then attached using a different technique. The time and price will depend on your stylist.

The hair used in this tutorial is synthetic kanekalon jumbo braid. This is the type of hair we highly recommend for synthetic dreadlock work. We carry many different brands of this hair, so if you have a particular favorite, call our store at (509) 326-7100 or use the Live Chat on our website doctoredlocks(dot)com to see if we carry what you'd like to use! =]

You would likely need about 7-10 bags for a full head. It’s not sold by length, so you’d have to adjust depending on your needs. :)

Super easy, actually. Just cut below the wrap, unravel the top part, then unbraid the inside. Slides right out.

If you don't own a steamer, you might want to check out another video we have called "How to Cover Your Base Color on a Synthetic Dreadlock Installation Tutorial." It shows a similar process on how to hide your natural hair, but doesn't require any steaming or setting. You can find this video on our KZbin channel under "Playlists" in the Single Ended Synthetic Dreadlock Installation Tutorials playlist. Thanks for watching! :)

Thanks! :) Steamers can be purchased at various places. You just want to make sure they have a high wattage and a direct steam nozzle. If the wattage is too low, they wont produce enough steam to push through the center of the dread.

Yes, there is no reason to cut your hair off when you are done with this style. The natural hair is safely braided inside. I wouldn't say this is the "normal" way to do dreads or extension dreads as there are lots of ways. Check out our tutorial section at our Doctoredlocks web page under Synthetic-Dreadlock-Tutorials - you will find everything you ever wanted to know about amazing looking temporary dreads that won't damage your hair. :)

If you go to our KZbin channel and click the "Browse Videos" tab, you'll see a category called "Playlists." Click Playlists, and open the playlist "Synthetic Dreadlock Aftercare and Removal Tutorials." It should be the playlist on the left in the second row. The removal video is the 3rd video in that playlist. :) We would just give you a link, but KZbin won't allow us to do that. Using the playlist will be the fastest and easiest way to find the video. Thanks for watching!

I actually got mine on ebay years ago. They last for ages! It is a Jiffy J2 with a wig handle attachment. You can usually get the base for around $200 and the attachment for around $50.

There are a few other methods you could use for sealing it - look at flat iron sealing of synthetic dreads (in our other tutorials), but steaming is generally the easiest when you are creating dreadlocks on someone.

Well, there are a few tricks. Its basically just a matter of practice. Grab small sections from the top fold of the bundle, then pull down and away to separate it. Be "flowey" in your motions. Don't worry about tangles at the bottom so much. Just braid a bit and with your free hand finger comb the larger loops out and keep going.
@doctoredlocks

The one most professionals use is a Jiffy J2 with a wig steamer attachment. I've heard decent things about the power shark lines - though it looks like you may have to hold the entire water reservoir as you steam and that could get really heavy. I purchased my J2 off of ebay a bajillion years ago. I'd suggest checking there first. :)

Thanks for the love! We love sharing knowledge to help our fantastic viewers and custies, so thank YOU for being awesome and watching and participating! As far as what method to use to install temporary dreads into long hair, you may want to try the blanket stitch method. It's a braid method that will keep your natural hair up higher. We have a video for it called "How to Blanket Stitch for Synthetic Dreadlocks Tutorial," which you can find in our Double Ended Synthetic Dreadlock playlist!

Washing is easy, and you can do as often as you like. Typically every couple weeks - the more you wash, the more frizzy hairs will be at the base - so do so sparingly. You can keep them in for up to three months, but don't keep them in any longer than that otherwise your natural hair will start to dread.

You can leave them, but just know that since you are adding about double the hair using the synethics, your hair will look pretty thin at the base. Also, the bits that are braided into the synthetic dreads will be protected and will not dread up. It’s best to dread first, then do extensions over the top. That way they will be locking at the same rate. :) Check out our tutorial on human hair permanent extenders. That may be a better way for you to go.

You can try it with a different steamer, but it's important to get a steamer that has a good amount of output. If it’s not strong enough it won’t seal at all and will look poofy instead. :(

7-10 bundles of Kanekalon Jumbo Braid should be good - but if your hair is that long, it might be better to do a DE Dread and Blanket Stitch combo. Look up Blanket Stitch on our channel - and if you want the braid covered, look up covering the base on our channel as well. :) Those may work better for really long hair.

I would suggest a different method for a more natural look. Check out the boil seal tutorials. Twisted dreads are meant be smooth with tapered ends.
@doctoredlocks
@doctoredlocks 11 жыл бұрын
Yes, yes and yes - but make sure you test out your method first. I can tell you that in theory it will work, but using a flat iron is difficult to heat the center of your dread enough to create a seal. You may want to crank up the heat and use a damp towel around the dread to force steam into the core. :)
