Best video I've seen of distinguishing the two variations of this exercise. It's one of my pet peeves when people refer to dips as just "the dip" as if there's only one version of it, and when i ask them if they're referring to chest dips or tricep dips, they look at me puzzled like they think it's tomato tomahto thing. Both are totally different.
@Nutritioneering11 ай бұрын
Definitely, chest dips and tricep dips have different applications in a workout routine. In my current workout, I prefer to use either chest dips or tricep dips to target a specific muscle group. However, when I was younger, I used to do a combination of these two variations with a medium grip and slight lean because it allowed me to perform the most reps. Some people also use dips as a push exercise and want to hit both the chest and triceps in one movement so it might make sense to use a hybrid variation. Either way, as you suggested, it's important to understand which variation of dip you're using and why!

Bit of a different opinion here: wouldn't it be better if you could tuck your legs behind a little more so you can go deeper to stretch the triceps more.
@Nutritioneering9 ай бұрын
I appreciate you sharing your opinion! Yes, that may be an option if you find that your range of motion on tricep dips is limited due to your feet touching the floor. In that situation, I would recommend bending your knees more while keeping your hips forward. This should give you the room to go deeper without shifting your center of gravity back so far that you lean forward and put more load on the chest.
@greyemrednus7 ай бұрын
...could definitely be a good option, but only if you have the range. Beginners should imo not generally jump to the deepest dip even though it would be more effective, because of injury risk. Better to feel it out, slowly increasing ROM, if necessary with resistance band support.
@Nutritioneering7 ай бұрын
@@greyemrednus I totally agree. You should not go deeper than you can comfortably to avoid unnecessary stress on the shoulders. Also, the difference in targeting the chest vs triceps has more to do with body position and joint angles than depth. The previous comment was referring to a situation where someone's range of motion was limited by their feet hitting the floor, which is where I would suggest modifying form to reach the maximum comfortable depth.

I'm having a lot of trouble with the concept of "Leaning forward" I keep my legs behind, knees under hips, as one does, but then it becomes impossible to lean forward
@Nutritioneering2 ай бұрын
That's understandable, as it can be tricky to find the right balance. Here are some additional tips: Looking down at the floor instead of straight ahead is the easiest way to tilt your body forward. You can't see my knees at the bottom, but they are slightly behind my hips, facilitating the forward lean. Also, you'll notice in the video that my hands are further behind my torso for chest dips. It's not a drastic forward lean you're after, just enough to shift the load to your chest. I hope this helps!

If you do it weighted (with a belt), is gonna be tricep or chest dominant? My doubt is because with a dip belt you're less able to move your torso. Greetings from Ecuador 🎉
@Nutritioneering Жыл бұрын
Greetings, Victor. That's a great question! The weighted dip belt shifts your center of gravity forward, which tends to make the exercise more chest-dominant, especially with heavier weights. However, you can still target the triceps with weighted dips by using a closer grip and keeping your elbows tucked while staying as upright as possible.

Cheers for the video. How much is your arm span?
@NutritioneeringАй бұрын
Thank you! My arm span is 71.5”, which is relatively long for my height of 69”. Doesn’t seem to hurt for dips though!

I started tweakin when I realize that this whole time I did tricep dips and not chest dips cuz I used an extra 10kg weight I cant do a single chest dips
@Nutritioneering6 ай бұрын
I'm glad my video helped you notice the difference in dip technique. I think with practice, you will improve with chest dips. Once your muscles get used to it, they generally put you in a stronger position.
@ariannam.93602 ай бұрын
I can’t do either lol

That's okay! You could apply the same concepts when doing assisted dips on a machine or with a power band.
