Stopping the compressions releases the blood pressure and means you have to work harder to build sufficient pressure back up. There are other reasons, for the first aider's health, not to engage in mouth contact e.g. you have no idea what pathogens the patient may carry.

Rather risk the tips breaking than not going deep enough, ribs can heal

It's almost impossible to carry out CPR correctly without the risk of breaking a rib or 2. Compressing the sternum by 5-6 cm is hard work and it's far further than the average chest expansion through normal breathing (around 3cm)
