This video couldn’t have come at a better time in my recommendations. A week after watching this video, a man in the bar I work part time in had a cardiac arrest, while doing CPR, I followed all the instructions, I asked someone to get me an AED, everyone looked at me strange, as I am only young, 16, and they didn’t think I’d know how to do it, I got my co worker to continue the CPR as I placed on the pads to shock him, a few seconds later the ambulance arrived and took over. The man survived, and the ambulance crew was surprised at how young I was, telling me that what I did probably saved that mans life. I still see him at the bar from time to time.

Professor Pantridge from Co.Down, Northern Ireland, invented the mobile defibrillator and his invention has saved countless lives all over the world. His work continues to save lives to this day and yet he does not get the credit, appreciation and acknowledgement he deserves. He was a true hero. ❤

Yep first cardiac ambulance was in Belfast in the late 60's - some good historical footage in the BBC archives. The first deffibs were very big and heavy and Prof Pantridge got the design down to something more managable. My theory is that his "message" got lost in the troubles which kicked off in 69. Meanwhile in Brighton Prof Douggie Chamberlain was doing something similar. Both men deserve recognition.

As someone who had a cardiac arrest while driving right in front of an ambulance, everyone should be taught how to use these live saving devices. Equally important, these AED's should be widely available within larger shops, supermarkets etc. I was in a coma for 2.5 weeks and that was with the ambulance right in front of me when I died. These devices will save lives, we just need them readily available. Maybe a sign in the Windows of premises which have them etc would help save some lives. Speed is essential to both help save the live, and as important, minimise lack of oxygen to the brain so brain damage is minimal. You will have a degree of brain damage with a cardiac arrest, it's called cerebral hypoxia, impossible not to because the heart has stopped pumping blood and oxygen but fast CPR or AED use will minimise damage. Also note there is a big difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest. A cardiac arrest is simple, your dead within seconds. A heart attack means your heart has a critical problem but is working in some form. Learning CPR and using AEDs should be mandatory in secondary education.

I have never seen an AED outside of its box. I have no idea what it looks like or what it contains. I would have liked this video to show more of the device and make it more familiar. The less familiar we are with things the more frightening and apprehensive people will be about using them. I would have liked the video to show to AED sooner and explain what it actually does and therefore adds logic to the situation. However, all in all, a good video and still informative.
@blturn
@blturn 2 жыл бұрын
It’d set you up for failure. You seem like the kind of person who would like to know all the little details to be well prepared for a situation. While that is admirable, it would make you panic easier when things aren’t exactly like you learnt. Many AEDs will look different. Different shapes, different buttons, different interface, differing instructions etc. Giving you a basic rundown of how the device works is better honestly, it prevents you from panicking when the AED you may use is missing a button you remember seeing in this video. Being very prepared is always good but always having initiative will prevent mistakes.

Rest assured, redbird146! If you need to use one, go right ahead, open it up and get to it, because every second counts. Each model looks a bit different, but they are designed and built specifically for people who have never seen one before. The machine talks you through the process and the diagrams are as obvious as possible. I think I have read that for some (maybe all) models, even if the two stickers are placed in exactly the opposite locations by mistake, the machine will detect & "swap" them automatically. Bottom line? the victim needs you: please do not be paralyzed by fear of doing the wrong thing. Thank you for watching a video like this... already you are more prepared than most other bystanders!

Why doesn't the AED call the ambulance? it has a battery. It has speakers. Why not add a sim card, make it autodial 999 when it decides the patient needs an ambulance and then on loudspeaker whilst you are delivering first aid, you can be on the phone hands free.
@Nonametopissyouoff
@Nonametopissyouoff 5 жыл бұрын
Ambulance should be already called by the time of the AED being brought out. In fact calling an ambulance should happen simultaneously with CPR or even be the first thing you do. Dial the ambulance and put it on speaker proceed to do CPR. Sometimes these defibs. Are really far away and it would be waisting a lot of time waiting for the AED to dial emergency services.
@DylanSargesson

Ideally you would already be on the line with 999 before you'd got the AED attached.
@robertdbarnes5850
@robertdbarnes5850 2 жыл бұрын
These replies are correct. Calling 999 (or 911, or whatever it is for wherever you are) is the FIRST thing to do (if you're alone), even before (chest compressions and) getting to the AED box. I believe some public installations are monitored so that opening the AED box triggers an alarm to emergency services. But if that's the first signal to emergency services, that is already later than it should be.

@@whatyousaidbud 'Mid axillary line" means aligned with the middle of the armpit. According to them, the lateral pad was placed too far towards the front. You can find the definitions and diagrams for those just by searching the full terms, even though he misspelled them. That's all it takes to be able to explain it yourself. I'd be more concerned with finding out what basis they have for claiming the pad was poorly placed. I've now seen tens of sources place it on either location, with one directly stating that you can do either. Axillary = Armpit Anterior = Nearer to the front Posterior = Nearer to the back Axillary Lines = Three imaginary lines that run down the anterior, middle, and posterior of your armpit.

I've seen several instructions and manufacturer pages that insist an AED *cannot* restart a heart once it has stopped - that it only works on ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. The first line in this video is that it restarts the heart that has stopped in a cardiac arrest. If that statement is not true, it is a dangerous one to make. Chest compressions and not an AED would seem appropriate for a stopped heart, presuming the person isn't beyond saving. It's only when the heart is fluttering (fibrillation or tachycardia) that the AED will *reset* the inappropriate and uncoordinated existing rhythm. Either that, or some AED units *do* restart a stopped heart and others only reset the rhythm... in which case it seems critically important for everyone to know which is which and perhaps they should be color-coordinated, too?? FWIW, I'm not an authority by any stretch... just someone who's been trying to learn and has encountered an apparent difference in understanding what an AED is actually able to do.

@Pat Terson his English is perfect your just jealous because you wish you were in his shoes to have attain such high quality education. At least he ain't as low class and hostile as you are because only low class people behave and acts this way. If you were of high class you would have act in a well mannered way. Please go back to taking English classes because it is clear you need one, how can you not see that this man's English is on point with a high quality accent.

@Pat Terson I understand every word, probably you have an hearing disability that needs to be checked out. Please check it out soon because you might have an ear impairment. I don't even know if you know what that means, due to your incapabilities of understanding English. It's not like the man was speaking Spanish. I come from a total different country and I understand everything. People like you who have this high rate of jealousy towards black people will be burnt and rot in hell. Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand!

if your doing CPR without mouth to mouth and meaning hands on only and doing 100 compressions per minute as adviced i think it was then u attached a AED and the AED says after the shock to continue with compression and administer a breath can u just continue doing hands on like you have been doing until the next shock or pemedics arrive. Or do you have to do compressions and give a breath .i just want to get all the full knowledge of this

If you’re unable or unwilling to do rescue breaths (mouth to mouth), then we recommend compression only CPR. It is advised to continue doing CPR while the AED is being connected if you have someone there to help you, then follow the instructions from the AED. If you are on your own and you have an AED then attach it as soon as possible, then follow the instructions from the AED. If you have been doing compression only CPR, then continue with this until the paramedics arrive and tell you to stop, you are too exhausted to continue or the patient shows signs of life/recovery.

Ok, so after the AED delivers the shock, you continue with compressions... but how many compressions do you do (how long for) until you administer a breath. And do you give 2 breaths or just 1?
