How to Do DODGE and BURN Photo Editing in Photoshop Elements

Using Dodge and Burn for Photo Editing is a powerful technique, but to really use these tools successfully you need to understand exactly how they work.

We start by looking at the Burn tool, which darkens areas of an image, and the Dodge tool, which lightens them. Best practice is for you to use a soft-edge brush and a low exposure setting for subtle effects, I demonstrate these techniques on a plain blue background and a basic portrait downloaded from Pixabay. We then look at how the Burn tool increases color saturation and darkens the image, while the Dodge tool desaturates and lightens it. I then show you practical applications, such as enhancing makeup on a portrait by darkening eyelids and lips with the Burn tool and whitening teeth with the Dodge tool. I also demonstrate using these tools on a layer mask to enhance image edges. Plus we look at the range option (shadows, midtones, highlights) in the tools' settings, noting its subtle impact.

Tremendous tutorial, George. I have been enjoying PSE for a number of years yet always struggled with burn / dodge. Using 10%(ish) exposure, continue to keep mouse engaged are game changer tips. Please keep the PSE tutorials coming. I would love to see a sports (baseball / hockey) graphic tutorial.....like a sports card on steroids. Thanks again.
