The first thing I ever made was a hexagon pin cushion like this. It was hard work! But it was like initiation... once I did that my Grandma let me move onto a quilt which was thankfully much easier! Minimal hand sewing for the win! xx

jazzyrobot What did your grandma think was a good first time quilt? I'm a beginner and have searched high and low for answers to this question. Thank you! 😄

I always recommend patchwork for first time quilts ;) 4-6 inch blocks or a precut charm pack is great too!

I gave my granddaughter 5" squares for a doll blanket, now we are on the 10" squares. She is going on 5 July 1st, so too young for cutting. Have you looked through Melanie's feed? Maybe try , Google - Amy Smart, Diary of a Quilter.

Okay, thanks to your tutorial I have fallen in love with EPP. Something I thought I would never enjoy. I would love more videos on this Method. Like types of projects you could use the hexagon shapes for. Also found some super cute shapes like hyacinths and diamond blocks but having s hard time finding the templates for them. Great video as usual!

She is talking about the initial part of gluing the fabric to the paper, but yes you are right you still hand stitch them all the way around. The glue part was traditionally done with hand basting stitches ;)

Elle Groover the old fashioned way these were done was using thread to attach the fabric to the paper. The very first step, not the second. You'd use a long stitch that you'd either sew through the papers then through the corners of the fabric or you'd only sew through the fabric but use more stitches. It takes for-ev-er. And if you sew into the paper you have to cut everything before taking the papers out.

Thanks for sharing. I got all my stuff from a quilt shop. The only thing I am having trouble with knotting and the thread keeps coming out of my needle. They told me to use superior 60 weight polyester. So not sure how long I will do these, getting tired of losing my thread out of the needle

Your video was very well done however, having just finished the GFG portion of a quilt I'm working on with over 1200 pieces and having used a washable glue stick, I feel I should mention that it's so much easier to hand stitch the little hexagons together if you remove the paper pieces from the hexagons as soon as they are completely surrounded by other little hexagons as this gives you more flexibility in manipulating the fabric to add additional ones. Also, remember you have to wash the quilt top and iron all the little selvages back into place before you can add the batting and backing which will then allow you to remove all the paper pieces to enable you to ultimately quilt because it is virtually impossible to remove them without washing.

Great timing - I am working on a small hexie project now. I did a big quilt last year. They are so much fun. Is there a benefit to doing hexies this way over machine piecing? I have an acrylic template from my scrapbooking days that I use to trace the shape on the fabric then I cut and sew together in the same order you described. Seems to work well but everyone else says this should be done by hand!
@MelanieHam
@MelanieHam 7 жыл бұрын
yes, agreed most people encourage this way because you can get the stitches so tiny that the look is better. A lot of people like these for portable projects too...I say do it how you like best!
@amyb6313
@amyb6313 7 жыл бұрын
Melanie Ham I should try them that way. Then my edges will be turned under and wont fray. I applique them with a small blanket stitch to help prevent that, but I'm sure they eventually will
