Great lesson and playing! Rhoads is known to have used 10's and 11's, so he wasn't relying on lighter gauges for his killer bends and vibrato.

I think Randy used 10s when tuned to E flat, so the string tension was similar to 9s tuned to E.

one thing about strings, i recommend the 9-46 strings instead of 9-42, if you want just the lower strings to sound a bit more tight and in tune. when i switched to lighter string gauge, i ran into a problem of the lower strings sounding a little too floppy, 9-46 fixed it
@CameronCooper
@CameronCooper 3 жыл бұрын
Coolio! Just comes down to how hard you hit the lower register. I adjust to suit whatever string gauge I try out

I’m a pretty heavy picker so I use 10-48 for standard and half step down. I tried 9-42 when I first started and it just felt too loose. I needed more resistance
@RockinSG

It was recommended I use 9 - 46 on my Wolfgang with a D-Tuna. I guess the 46 gauge helps when using the D-Tuna. I've been using 9-42 since I started playing.

Great tip about the lighter gauge strings. All THE rock gods play lighter gauge, heck even Meshuggah use light gauge strings and tune to Z, there's a Rick Beato video where he talks about the sonic benefits of playing 8's, Dave Friedman says it takes out the un-useful low-end frequencies that live & in the studio the cut-out / hi-pass anyway. Lots of guitarists put themselves through unnecessary pain using heavy gauge strings when the Legends knew where it's at, yerself included Cameron 🤘 Great Vid

From your videos, visually, it seems like your wide and fast vibrato's do not return to the completely unbended state in between the mini bends. Especially on the minor third. Is this correct? Or does it just look like that?

@Alfred_E_Newman
@Alfred_E_Newman 3 жыл бұрын
not Cam, but i'll tell you this, My playing was improved 10 fold when I switched from 10's to 9's. The guitar came alive under my fingers. COuld play with much less pressure from my fingers which allowed me to increase my speed dramatically. Bends became effortless. Vibrato on bent strings were also much easier. I lost almost nothing in terms of tone, either. Keep in mind that many players use even lighter guage strings. I believe that Ygngwie uses 8's. SO give it a try, will only cost u a couple bucks ti find out, right?
