It's interesting how much forward grip rotation is actually used in muscle ups. For MU's and high pulls, I typically start with maybe 85% of the rotation I can achieve by just reaching up to a bar at an accessible height. For slow MU's, I start by standing on a box to get the grip, then step off the box, pike, and start the pull. I never thought about the grip rotation much until I started working on pulling straight through to the top on dynamic MU's. But look how much his grip is pushing back against upward movement at 1:18, even with that much forward rotation. So if you want to be able to pull straight through to the top, it's really important to be able to release and rotate your grip more forward as you approach the apex of the pull. This makes it a lot easier to keep your torso vertical or slightly inclined forward, vs. starting to lean backward. And focusing on grip rotation is a great cue to help smooth out the transition, without having to contact the bar hard. The higher you can pull, the easier it is to get the grip rotated without having to lean over the bar.

Thanks, I can do 30+ pull ups and 5-6 reps with 40kg (and 7-8ish muscle ups) but never really gotten into the technique of high pulls ups.

so you also pull from the scapular to get more momentum? I mean so many teach scapular depression (down) before starting the pulling. But it looks like you do it simultanously to create aditional momentum.

Is that 20kg or 20lbs for weighted pull ups? I've started implementing 45lb weight with my pull ups @235 body weight. Out of curiosity whats your height and weight and stats? Just looking for comparisions in terms of numbers would like to be able to get a muscle up; normal pull ups feel very easy to me at my current weight tbh

Hey! I’m using 20 kg plates for the weighted pull ups. Great that you’ve started implementing extra weight to your pull ups. That’s one of the best things you can do for muscle ups as well. My height is 5’9 and weight is 154 lbs. My current 1 RM for pull ups is 80 kg (176lbs). But don’t compare yourself to me because I’ve been training for a long time and also compete on international level. Pull ups with 45 lbs is great and not a lot of people can do that. 💪🏻💪🏻

@@samnijland you think 235 lb is to heavy for Cali? I’m 5’11 bench max is 305 deadlift 400ish and squat not too sure since I got hip issues but I use to rep 315 for 3x5

@@KSneed9 235 lbs is definitely not too heavy for calisthenics. You’re already proving it by being able to add weight to your pull ups. 🔥
