Glad to see the acknowledgment of Mahasi before video.

This is brilliant-- precisely what I've been looking for. One thing, though: A weightlifter DOES continue to lift weights once he's strong; with more skill and consistency, until he reaches whatever goal suits him for stopping. Even then, in many cases, one will lose is one has snoozed.

This is incredibly helpful. I've been struggling with how fast or slow to note, and the advice for how to handle rapid-fire sensations was very useful.

True, anything that is built up must come down. However 'noting' works to deconstruct.

haha, I used to do finger labeling before seeing this video (read the book before). I really went complex with finger labeling, I even have a "disengage", "re-sync" labels with fingers, and other :D

I would like to ask the following. When I notice mental talk (which rarely fades away and hides in the rear and the top of the head) and I label it talk or hear-in, it stops for a (split of) a second, and then starts the talk again, usually sth different is the topic. I sense that shifting my focus back into the head and watching for the next talk becomes also a sort of talk. Or I hear repeating your instructions etc. If I label periodically - talk - talk - talk, it would probably lead to interrupting the talk by the label. But would it be the correct way to proceed? I´ll be very happy to get an answer. (I only started the practice, please pardon me if my question has been answered somewhere else.) Thank you a lot.

If I am supposed to label distractions, what am I getting distracted from? Am I supposed to be following my breath and labeling distractions? What if I am successful at staying focused on the breath? Or sensations somewhere that are continuous, not coming and going?

When you say "Touching" do you mean acknowledging a sensation (thought, emotion, visual or internal dialogue)? Thanks, your video's are extremely helpful.

go to 6:56 where he talks about it. I would add that Noting pace changes within one sitting session; it can start just normal, one note a second, and then it can speed up and my noting voice becoms almost chant like but then at some stage slows down and so on. I do at times force fast and loud noting if Im feeling very dull and this usually helps to keep the mind on task and then things slow down as concentration kicks in. All the best to you!

Could you give exemples when you explain? I am really lost and cannot follow
@michaelc24065 жыл бұрын
So many teacher's forget examples. It seems like we remember thing the opposite way that we should teach them (top down vs bottom up), so it's a bit of a blind spot. For example, you hear a dog barking so you think, noise. Then experience the dog bark for a second. A little later a thought arises of doing the washing. That might be planning. Other common categories might be social, remembering, food, itching, worrying, sexual, irritation, shopping, tiredness etc.

Agreed. I taught high school and we could never get away with just describing what to do.
