This is part of an interview Shinzen Young did with Stephanie Nash in January 2009. www.basicmindfulness.org
The purpose of this interview was to introduce people to mindfulness meditation and/or to Shinzen in a more casual, talk-show type format - thus Steph is playing the role of non-meditating talk-show host while Shinzen maintains his role as insightful, innovative teacher who speaks from deep experience & wisdom.

Shinzen Young gives by far the best and clearest explanations about meditation.

I notice that some people are commenting that Shinzen Youngs teachings are too analytical and that you can't really "get"it this way. Everyone is different. Shinzen Young's teachings were the only ones I could truly understand and use. I have listened to many of his lectures on tapes and CD's for maybe a few hundred hours. These teachings saved my life. They also taught me how to think more clearly. But I found it very different to watch the you tube clips. If I had encountered these first, I would not have be able to get a clear idea of what he was talking about. For me, the longer talks are true gems, and transmitted a foundational understanding.

Raina430 I'm sorry to say you got all wrong. Mindfulness is precisely not to think about... So there is nothing to understand...

@@centrino538 there definitely is a lot to learn and understand when it comes to the practicalities of meditation instruction. The mindset of "don't try to understand it" is something that held me back for years

This is a great video to watch to understand Shinzen's clarity in teaching mindfulness. I have studied mindfulness and used it for a long time and I never was this clear about it. Participating in the teleconference retreats, I am sure, have had a lot to do it with in addition to Shinzen's clarity. Thanks to Stephanie and Shinzen and all who make this possible and sooo available. It is all here on youtube...

Everything he say's will makes perfect sense if you have been practicing regularly for some time. They are just very analytical interpretations of experiences that will happen on the cushion if you follow the path long enough.

Absolutely agree, I only discovered his interpretations of the practice after years of practicing. I also gained my grounding following the Therevada tradition. Shinzen has an incredible amount of interesting and relevant things to say and he is amazingly articulate and knowledgeable, but sometimes that is also the problem with his style of teaching, it is a little too analyticial. At the end of the day he is trying to intellectualise an experience that goes beyond words.

The last sentence makes it sound as if you're saying you could marry any random stranger from the street and by being mindful be able to put up with whatever incompatibility comes up ("monks are SO enlightened, they never get divorced" ;-). By seeing and accepting someone for who they really are, you can also learn to accept realizing when it's not such a good fit.

I've followed Shinzen for years, but wasn't until i got serious in studying Eckhart Tolle, that i finally "got" what Shinzen was saying for all these years.

"Sense clarity" is like a phrase that over complicates one's actual experience. Once someone can observe their thoughts, they automatically get to use "clarity"...which is an ego function. Would you trust your ego to tell you "here's what the matrix is for that depressed thought..." I sure wouldn't.

Equanimity is a term not often used? I have been hearing it since I first delved into these practices 40 years ago. But he does delineate the analysis much better. However, I found that I could not allow that process until I had found a philosophical foundation that allowed me to interpret events in my life and in the world differently. The two of those together are unknotting some very conditioned habits.

Excellent video.... I wonder what kind of 'meditation' it would be if we incorporate the techniques of NLP in 'mindful meditation' practice!!! Looks like Shinzen is kind of doing it..........

I'd argue that NLP draws from some natural experience of the meditators. When I started meditation I realized that I started doing things that could be labelled as some NLP techniques - just out of a pure desire to connect with people. I have also seen some of those techniques used by other Zen masters like Daizan Roshi, and they seem not to care at all about them.

My point is that I had to leave Shinzen's path, cleave more to the Theravada path, before I could accomplish any insight. He's great if you're happen to be a teacher yourself, then these lectures make a kind of removed, intellectual sense. Otherwise, finding your own way by listening to him soley didn't work for me, and perhaps others. See, HE'S done the actual work in Japan, but telling people about it...this is fairly uselses. You're no better off watching daytime TV than hearing him here.

Equanimity and sense clarity are delivered here as serparate functions, separate skills, acheivements...this is so wrong. These are the RESULTS of practice not the goals of practice. Shinzen, open up your Theravada book. You'll know then what I'm saying.
