This epxplains so much! I just learned about the existence of Punch Needles today and was wondering how it even secures the thread and if it's good for embroidering doll faces. The two "tutorials" I've seen merely showed how to thread the needle and then demonstrated only one stitch. When she flipped it over, it was like I had an epiphany. I'm glad I looked at this video first because who knows how frustrated I might've been running in circles with less informative tutorials.

I'd use a fusible web on the backing if you plan to wash & wear your creation.

Hi Amy, very interesting video. I am thinking of taking up punch needle embroidery (I have made a New Year's resolution to get my creative and to take up a new hobby) therefore I do have some questions that I would like to ask. Please may I ask as to whether you are using embroidery floss and if so, as to how many strands you are using. If I do take up punch needle embroidery, I aim to use an ultra point punch needle (as i would like to get more finer detail if it is possible to achieve, please tell me if it can be done). Can metallic coloured embroidery floss also be used (I live in the UK so please forgive me for using UK English). Can Cross Stitch patterns be used to create punch needle designs and what is the best way to do this (for example; two rows of embroidery floss per square as with an X per square in Cross stitch). I use an app on my phone which also has a website (which I use on my PC) called Pixel Stitch as with Pixel Stitch, I hope to be able to produce photo to punch needle and drawings to punch needle designs. What is the best way to blend colours in punch needle to achieve a 'realistic' effect (like clouds, sea, grass etc.). Despite the craft being called punch needle, can a regular embroidery needle like those used in Cross Stitch be used and is the technique the same as with a punch needle or will the starting and ending of 'stitches' be different. I also hope to sell my completed work and to do custom designs for people if I am requested to do so. Do you know if there is a market for this where you are in the USA (in the hope that there could be a market for it here in the UK). Please can all of these questions be answered as this is something that I am desperately needing answers on. Any help, advice and any tips will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance. What fabric do you use? I had gotten some but when I pressed the punch needle through, all it did was poke holes and didn’t snap back into place. And it was very hard to punch through.

No it needs to be woven fabric. The felt would deteriorate after being punched through multiple times.

We are using Valdani floss which you don't separate out by strand you use as is. If we were using DMC or another floss that you separate we would likely work with 2 or 3 strands for this project!

@Michael Archangel the fabric is supposed to hold it in. I'm still learning but have seen mod podge used in videos I've watched. I also saw that it it is on something that's going to get alot of use or will be worn to use fusible webbing on the back.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have the first and last stitch on the underside? That's the way I've seen punch needle work done on all other sites.

At the local craft store hardly any of the needles have sizes on them. We didn't want to invest in it if it didn't capture my child's interest. Does it matter? Because we are doing everything the videos say and the instructions but the thread is not staying in the fabric.

This is the only texture this tool can make! If you want to make embroidery without loops you'll have to use a standard needle not a punch needle.
