Yesterday, I rode a very rough wooden roller coaster...and got a little dehydrated. I woke up this morning, with intense vertigo. Several months ago, I went to an indoor concert, and was near the speakers. That next morning, I had very mild vertigo...not bad, just weird. I posted my symptoms on FB (cause I work in an Operating Room, and have hundreds of RN's Dr.'s and other medical professionals as friends...figured someone knew something...and 1 did). I google'd vertigo, and discovered Epley maneuver. I found this video, and did it myself. After I completed it, I threw up violently, and I am 100% cured. Thank you very much!

I've had dizziness one or two times a year for nearly ten years that occurs when looking up. The bouts last from a few weeks to sometimes months, and can be very debilitating. After watching this with my wife we went and applied what we learned in your video. It worked. I feel like I'm close to 100% balance wise. I can't tell if I'm a little off balance when I test myself by balancing on one leg with my eyes closed or if its just weak muscles from being somewhat inactive because of my past condition. I did this at home with my husband's help yesterday and it worked for me the first time. I was on meclizine, but the sensation was still very intense. It was hard to hold the positions, and I did a lot of the "saying Aaahhh" that you mentioned. I held for the 2 minutes you said, rather than the 30 seconds some of the other videos say, and that gave time for the room to stop spinning. There was residual nausea for an hour or so after the maneuver. I am still slightly "off" this morning, maybe 2% of the dizziness remaining, but I am also still dehydrated from yesterday's meds. Maybe I will try the maneuver one more time. In any case, you saved me 5 days of misery and not driving, while I waited for my ENT appointment. I am so grateful!

Holy cow, this worked! Thanks Dr. Johns!!!!! This same vertigo thing happened to me years ago in college, and I was in bed for 3 days. I was too freaked out to go to the doctor back then because I thought I had some inoperable brain tumor or something. No youtube at the time. I got it again 4 days ago in the middle of the night while I was sleeping. I went to bed just fine and woke up at 3 am with the room spinning. It was as if a switch had been flipped. After four days of feeling like I was going to vomit all over myself I found your video and my wife did the maneuver on me. When I tested each ear it was completely obvious it was my right ear as I got zero dizziness turning my head to the left and when I turned to the right, yack. So it definitely was one of those crystals floating around. She brought me down like you showed, turning head to the right, and major spinning. Then to the left and nothing for a minute and then whamo - sudden spinning room for 5 seconds, then face down and no more room movement. So did the crystal move out of the canal during that last 5 second period? Is there a way to prevent it in the future? Are there head positions to avoid to keep from moving the crystal back in the wrong place? Or does this particular crystal go back into solution, get stuck to something or otherwise never come back and bother me? Or could it have been the very same one that messed me up in college? I can't imagine how many MDs would have given me drugs and sent me home. I hope every GP and ENT in the world sees this video. I had a colleague at work get bad vertigo last year. He was maybe 30 and was walking around with a cane looking pretty miserable for a few weeks. I wonder if this was all he needed. I'm guessing from he hit count this is not an uncommon issue.

Good video and this maneuver really works. I had my BPPV for 4 weeks before I was able to get to a PT who specialized in vestibular treatment. It took two visits to get me clear, but I'm 100% better now. When doing these exercises, the vertigo will be intense, but just remember it only lasts a matter of seconds and will subside. I had severe vertigo on all three positions, and felt a bit dizzy sitting up. It was so scary the first time doing it, but well worth it in the end! I felt a bit worse for a day or two afterward, but a week later, I tried the Dix-Hallpike test again, and I was clear! Some people are clear after the first exercise. For some others, it takes several times. I now have my life back because of this maneuver. Thank you so much!

@PeterJohns2 жыл бұрын
@@pinkahboo925 There is some evidence that Foster's half somersault maneuver causes less dizziness/spinning than the Epley. I have never used it myself, as I find the Epley works just fine. If you have some over the counter anti-nausea medication, taking this before the Epley might lessen the unpleasant feelings a bit. It's easy to find videos on the half somersault..

Great explanation of the Epley Maneuver. As you know, this isn't the only youtube video of this on youtube. However, there are a couple of aspects of this that I found both unique and useful for me. I had tried this maneuver about 15 times without success. This included watching several videos of the process, including one that discussed the recommended angles in detail.. Not only the 45 degree head rotation but their recommended 20 degree downward position. This can be done using a pillow on a bed. I was close to using a protractor to get it precisely right. The 'secret sauce' of this video for me was the comment that that the Hallpike (Dix-Hallpike test) was identical to first position of the Epley maneuver. I had seen the Hallpike done with the head hanging over the table, and I didn't want to do anything with my head off the bed and no one to assist. With that hint and my careful practice, I could easily do the Hallpike. So I did the Hallpike on the other side and continued through the next three steps. Bingo. It was gone the first time! I was doing it perfectly, but perfectly wrong because it was my left side rather than my right side. I had reasons to believe it was my right side and once I got that idea, I didn't think it could be the other side. I will spare you a description of my wrong headed thought processes -- but the key aspect of my experience is that it can be difficult for an individual who is doing this without someone else helping to treat the wrong side. There are various rare but atypical complexities that account for some of the 20% that aren't 'cured' by the Epley maneuver. I have seen it quoted that professionals have about an 80% success rate and self administered procedures have a 60% success rate. I was certain that I had BPPV (which was correct) and almost as certain that I was treating the correct side. I was trying to get an appointment with a Physical Therapist working for a well known dizziness practice. It would have taken another week to get an appointment (at best). MAKE SURE YOU DO THE CORRECT SIDE. And, in my experience, it is MORE uncomfortable to do the wrong side than the correct side. And if you do more than one repetition on the wrong side, it seems to get better. However, this effect goes away quickly and you are back where you started from.
@PeterJohns10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments from a patient's perspective. I made this video with the intended audience being medical professionals. However, many people have managed to do this maneuver either on their own, or with the help of another person. I don't know for a fact that doing the Epley maneuver on the wrong side is harder to tolerate than doing the correct side, because I have never done it or seen it studied. Thanks again.

The Epley maneuver will work- 1. If you have posterior canal BPPV. 2. If you figure out which side is the affected side (as explained in the video) 3. If you do put your head through the positions by yourself. Then you have about an 80% chance of curing yourself. If it doesn't work the first time, you can repeat the maneuver, say twice a day for a few days. This increases the chance of cure over 90%. If you have another cause of vertigo than BPPV, or do it wrong, then it will not work at all.

My brother-in-law has recurring vertigo- he said this video is a lifesaver-- and that if you go through it once and still feel dizzy, that going through it twice he has never had it not work..putting it out there that maybe two rounds may be in order...I recently went to the outer banks- climbing lighthouses, riding ferries, ocean and wind- and came back all dizzy..I waited it out for a few days thinking it was just getting my land legs back..he referred me to your video and wow! I was functional before, but it was annoying feeling out of step like I was walking sideways. I am very grateful you took the time to make this video, it helped me a ton!!

Thank you for this video. It helped me with my first BPPV episode before I could see a doc. I wasn't sure this is what I was experiencing but it resolved the vertigo feeling and my doc confirmed it was BPPV.

Thank you, thank you. I have been dealing with vertigo for about 5 weeks and I was trying my doctor's technique. That didn't work. Your technique was perfect. Thanks again.

Thank you for posting this! I was suffering from this for about 5 years. The maneuver cured me after two tries. A doctor told me I had so many causes and all he wanted to do was prescribe pills. Thank you!

This worked for me as well after trying it after watching the video several years ago. Never had vertigo since a day or two after I did the maneuver, and that was after vertigo had been plaguing me for weeks. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks Dr Peter, I had the spin going on for 4 weeks while turning right in bed, 2 doctor visits did not help and I came across this yesterday, did what you said twice and it's gone, I did not feel dizzy the second time and haven't since, really grateful and thanks for sharing this. God bless.

Glad you got relief. Your comment about the doctors you saw is all too common unfortunately.

Correctly diagnosed as BPPV, I had over one week of all the nasty side effects. After viewing the video and repeating the procedure (I did it before bed time and sat upright for 10 min. prior to reclining for sleep) I've now had one week of NO symptoms of BPPV; will share the u-Tube link with my Physician and update him on the results. Thank you Peter.

Last time did this with husband was 6 years ago, needs it again today. Thinks his problem may start with long flight. My brother told me to check KZbin for this (6 yrs ago) as he had seen patients in emerg with vertigo when a younger doctor suggested Epley Maneuver. Demonstrated and it worked and old doc was impressed (first impulse was maybe some sort of surgery). Works, one could do it on self, if not feeling too lousy to watch this to learn how.

Thanks Peter for your video on Epley, I had seen many videos on Epley but your one is best. I followed your style and fix my vertigo in just 2 Maneuver. Many thanks

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting this information out to the public. I watched this video several times and finally decided to try the hall pike test. I actually found out my right ear was the positive side. I did the Epley Maneuver that night with the help of my daughter. When I switched my head from right to left....OH MAN....I was feeling another vertigo attack, but I remember in your video you said that if that happens, that just means the crystals are moving and the maneuver is working. So I hung in there and finished through with it. When I sat up I didn't quite know what to think, so I sat for 10 minutes there, then went and watched some TV and went to bed. When I woke up in the morning..THERE WAS NO VERTIGO!!! I even tried to see if I could trigger it, and nothing happened! So this is day 2, and so far so good. Thank you for your help! I've been dealing with this for 2 months, and wish they would have done this for me at the E.R. when I first had it!!

Yep, this really worked for me. Vertigo is horrible and disabling. It is wonderful to have an instant, effective treatment. No more waiting for days for it to clear. Thank you so much.

Thanks! I found that most of the other videos don't show how to determine which is the affected side, and also they don't demonstrate both the left and right ear maneuvers. Glad it worked for you!

Peter - Thank you for this very clear explanation for the Epley Maneuver. I had had a stroke when I was 36. For a few days before my 60th birthday I began feeling very dizzy just like my stroke episode. I was very scared, did my face test to check for a possible TIA and did some research on WebMD about dizzy spells which ultimately brought me to your video. This maneuver cleared my dizziness with only a slight residual feeling and by the next morning, I was right as rain. Thank you!! And congratulations on One Mill. hits!

Thank you for the video, it worked!!!! My doctor had me doing the epley but I wasn't told to let my head dangle back at that angle nor did he explain how to decipher which side was the problem...so my vertigo continued for weeks! I had my husband assist me with your instructional video & I'm 100% better....1st try. We appreciate it very much! If there was a way to pay for your help...I would in a heartbeat.

Thanks Peter, Two years ago I had the problem. My Doctor sent me for a cat can, and then after 3 months to an audiologist. The audiologist performed the procedure. A few months later I performed the procedure myself and it worked. My Daughter in-law had the problem and I showed her your demonstration and she was cured. Thanks again Ed

Thanks!! My husband woke up with vertigo this morning, which has never happened to either of us. We live 2 hours from the nearest healthcare so we decided to try this and it seems to have worked. Others should be forewarned, though: the maneuvers may cause nausea or vomiting. He feels much better now though.

I was suffering from dizziness since 4-5 days and was taking MECLIZINE (25 MG) AND DIAZEPAM (5MG) every 8 hours as prescribed by my doctor. But it did not help. I tried this with the help of my wife and I coulnt believe the dizziness went away. Will see if it comes again in the coming days. Thanks a ton for this very good video. God Bless you!!

Thanks for this. I was able to cure my recent, unexplained vertigo without having to see a doctor by performing this maneuver on myself. Not for the faint of heart, though - the vertigo this induced for me was a trip!
