Hi Reid! Beautiful tutorial, as usual. Question: you've said in the past, that we need to stay away from putting magic and mentalism together, since such association dimishes the potential credibility on any audience. Thus, presenting Mentalism away from any perception of trickery or magic, increases the impact on our spectator's mind, as you've explained in other videos. How do you put together your advice with this great tutorial, which is a clear beautiful piece of mental magic, that can not divide or differenciate, where magic begins and mentalism starts, nevertheless being a delightful piece to anyone with some brain? Thank you in advance for your input!!

Hey! What a great question. I would say that you can choose to present this as a piece of card magic or a piece of mentalism. I would definitely classify this as mental magic if you perform as is, but if you were to alter the presentation to frame it as a card trick, perhaps by framing it as the card is turning over itself, the back is changing to blue and the queens are disappearing, then all of those moments would be incredible card magic. On the other hand, if you frame it more as a prediction/influence of choice and the cards are just the vessel for this demonstration then you could easily spin this as a mentalism piece. Totally up to you and what you want to get out of this effect. Thanks again for your awesome question😁🤘🏻

This is great. I think it’s fair to say that vast majority of audience doesn’t care if this is gimmicked or not. They just saw “the trick” as they obviously shouldn’t be aware of the gimmicks. New to magic so researching a new packet trick to get. I was thinking about b’wave because it comes up a lot, but this totally satisfies my need for that trick. May get it in future just because I like the graphics ;) but for now this is one of the more useful tutorials I’ve. Come across so far. Most definitely appreciated. Will be browsing your channel straight after this.

Thanks a lot! Welcome to the channel I hope you get some great value out of it and enjoy! You are correct they should not know it’s a gimmick. For me though, I avoid gimmicks as I don’t like having to rely on them. I like being able to perform all of my material anytime anywhere. This is something you will see the value in as you continue your journey in magic. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help, best of luck in your magic journey!

That’s very kind of you thanks. Oh absolutely, kind of the point I was aiming towards, but not being clear enough about: much prefer the idea that this does not rely on gimmicks/gaff. Just as strong. If not more. I didn’t really fancy card tricks much at all initially, but saw a few packet tricks and the strength of the effect of a couple of them won me over. But it hasn’t taken me long of practicing a couple of them to grow weary of the fact that they are achieved by clearly showing a gaff like a blank card as a the “reveal/punchline” or part of the trick. On reflection it’s just so obvious that that’s what it is…..like obviously you haven’t wiped the printing off the face pf a card……..I’m sure it has its place (can still be very deceptive…..”how did you substitute it” and entertaining nonetheless). But doubtless such things can quickly be overused. but in future I’ll be using a bit more discretion over determining whether a trick uses gaffs/gimmicks to keep hidden but achieve an illusion and those that are designed to be seen……..they seem strong at first but are obviously……what they are if given any thought at all. Definitely coming to the understanding that some of the really strong gimmicks may be near “self working”…….but to really get the most out of them they should be used sparingly and thoughtfully. Besides a whole book vs twice the price for one packet trick and a few cards to do it is a bit of a no-brainer. But it’s got me over my reluctance to try and work with cards.

@@ReidFerry I know how the magician's choice works. As many laymen nowadays. I often use that knowledge while performing some tricks where the audience can really freely choose actions. When I ask someone to choose a colour, like you did in the video, I often see a little smile on that person's face. I know he knows. But, after that, I ask the person if he wants to keep or to eliminate the chosen colour. And then I see the surprise in his eyes because he wasn't expecting that. I think the magician's choice can be used for a small part in a routine. but in this case, I think it's overused. And I also think that most people will wonder why you didn't gave them their first choice (the queen of clubs in this example) if they can really make all the decisions. By not giving him the queen of clubs, you're demonstrating that he's not really free to choose.
@ReidFerry
@ReidFerry Жыл бұрын
@sebastienfremal7588 this may be true for poor equivoque but if properly constructed and performed you can do entire routines with it and the smartest of laymen will be none the wiser. Again if it’s constructed properly there is no other option in their mind it would have always went this way and we are going with the choices they made! As for the example line, if you frame it properly it is absolutely nothing more then an example. It works fantastic and very often gives you a perfectly clean effect. But it is optional and while I would highly recommend you use it, it can be left out of this routine.

How do you resolve the glitch that the spectator chose the queen of clubs? It feels weird to later say they chose the hearts, and the original free choice is never addressed. It seems unresolved to the point that I question whether it's worth trying to hit the lucky 1 in 4 chance because it tells the spectator that was wrong and thus we have to go through magician's choice steps to get the correct card, and the original choice is completely ignored. It feels to me as a spectator like it was obvious I don't really have a free choice, which removes the astonishment because the rest of the choices aren't as clean.
@ReidFerry
@ReidFerry 2 жыл бұрын
The first selection has to be framed as an example and if it misses you quickly follow by saying “and that felt like a free choice right? That’s important as you’re about to make several decisions and I want you to be confident they are your own.” You can see exactly how I handle it in the performance and the spectator is none the wiser, it completely flies by

@@ReidFerry Ok. It struck me odd because the next choices aren't as free as the example naming a card. But I'm weird :D Thanks for the reply and the channel!
@ReidFerry

If you frame it as an example it completely flies and definitely does not ruin the trick while giving you the chance for a perfect hit. I would recommend you use it as it has always worked great for me but if you don’t like it that line can easily be removed from the script.

I don’t like gimmicks; deck of cards (uh huh), sharpie (yep), phone (……..😳) lol. I know, I know…..but some people absolutely use a phone as a gimmick. Not fond of that approach personally. As I feel, it will date. Doesn’t make it bad. I just like things that are timeless.
@ReidFerry
@ReidFerry 21 күн бұрын
I was referring to gimmick as props that do something special, they are specially made for magic. That is what I consider a gimmick, something that does more than it was intended to. I would say sharpie, phone, cards, etc are props, not necessarily gimmicks in my view. They are regular non-gimmicked items (though you could argue apps that spoof other apps are gimmicks). I personally love phone magic and tools but I understand your perspective
@rinkydinkfretboard8737

@ yea sorry, was being a bit childish there ;) I’m not shy of any type of performance if it suits the performer. But I’m not much of a smart phone guy (don’t even carry one most of the time). So it doesn’t fit with my persona. No doubt others use them to great effect for anything from dumping a card to full on apps. I guess I was talking personally about what draws me to want to perform with. And I’m always drawn to the vintage in most things. Musical instruments, fashion, and now magic. Like, if was was going to become a performer (not gonna happen, relax ;) ) i’s probably want to go the top hat and tails route. Probably wouldn’t get much respect for it……or booking lol. but a great sailor once said “I am what I am” lol.

I love this effect, always have, and this version is even better! However I really do think the way you begin your elmsley count is highly suspicious. It's supposed to just look like a simple count of the cards. A non-event. But the way you put your finger under that first card just looks like a move dude, I noticed it right away in the performance, I thought 'hmm what's that he's doing there?' and I thought it really was some other move.
@ReidFerry
@ReidFerry 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed it is awesome! Fair enough, I’ve never had an issue with that though, performing Elmsley counts for people all the time (magician brain perhaps?). Either way it’s the way I do it and no one else has to if they’re not a fan 😁
