One thing that makes John Danaher an amazing coach is the fact that he doesn't just teach techniques, he teaches WHY techniques work. With that being said, if you are in a rolling session, and you can understand the biomechanics of what each move is accomplishing, you can better teach students as to what nuances they can adjust to better make the moves more productive. That's the real goal that all coaches should strive for.

Single most stable position for pinning is - 90 degree Spines parallel is less stable - that's why top mount is less stable 1st -Understand the kind of pin opponent is doing on you. 2nd - Understand what are you fighting against a) Body weight and gravity aren't the only thing keeping a pin stable 3rd - Basis of a pin a) Using own body as a set of wedges* around your opponent's body, to inhibit movement b) Bodyweight is the means to reinforce the wedges Goal to get out of pin - regardless of side control type a) Get inside opponent's wedges Step 1: Reduce your vulnerability - put closest knee in pocket of his hip a) submissions - b) mount - Step 2: Get inside his wedges a) Best place to start - near side hip How: Take near side elbow and out it in the hip gap If too close, then turn away a little to make space for elbow to get in b) Join same side knee and elbow together How: Place near side knee at opponent's hip - hip is entry point Our knee will always beat opponent's knee at the hip Move inch by inch outward with far leg and enter near knee (shrimp) into opponent's hip (Hip is the entry point) Opponent cannot follow due to elbow inside from step 2(a) Then push inside when there's enough space c) Form a V shaped frame using elbow and knee Strong defense against mount or pressure by weight d) Join both legs together as another V e) Push with both legs against opponent's body f) If opponent tries to regain control by controlling head and Walk past our knee to re-pin us Then : Get inside grip by near side hand as a frame on wedge of opponent's biceps g) No shift inside knee outside opponent's body Then : We have our spines aligned with out opponent's spine h) Get inside arm hooks, push opponent's hips with legs to get own back off the floor Remember to have inside hooks before trying to sit up Then: Retain a butterfly guard NOTE: 1. Whose limbs are inside whose limbs - These forms the wedges 2. Bottom player's no. 1 priority is to make space 3. Grabbing gi from bottom can hold our self from moving - not the time to grab opponent's gi. 4. Time to push people away with elbows and forearms *Wedge: a piece of wood, metal, etc. having one thick end and tapering to a thin edge, that is driven between two objects or parts of an object to secure or separate them. Watching John you need 3 things: 1) a calming medicine so when you get blown away, you can still take in information 2) a dictionary. The guy uses words so particular, I have never heared of them. 3) a bucket to catch the mouthwater that will drip from your jaw, while you're looking forward to use the moves on your training partners.

I was at a introductory beginner class yesterday and we were shown the very basics and put in positions to try to escape, just to learn how it feels and the mentality of staying calm. I was being held in side control and I was completely stuck. It was fascinating. I'm pretty strong but I was completely helpless. I also managed to hold the other guy in side control and I experienced the difference of using my body weight to hold him down vs. using my body as wedges to hold him down. In the end it was really cool how I could spend almost no energy and he was not escaping.

Danaher puts things in a way where, you may not understand the true principal of what you are doing in say, side control. And then, he loops in all you were taught which holistically didn't make sense to you at the time, and you have an epiphany because you already physically knew the concept, but you never critically thought about it, or heard it verbalized it in such an eloquent way. The wedges description really cemented it for me. His level of mastery in understanding the art is mind-blowing.
