I got a message on one of my other videos asking about how to escape from a 300lbs wrestler.
Over the years I've had the opportunity to face many heavy heavy wrestlers. Many of them 300+ lbs. So I'm familiar with defending against their attacks and positioning.
In this video I give 2 ways to escape side control against a heavier opponent. Both options use the underhook.
If you're having trouble with side control and getting stuck. I hope these help.

I’m a white belt with six months of training. We have a short, stocky 280-ish pound guy that crushes us. I used these tactics today. My goals were (1) don’t let him get side control and (2), if he does, apply these tactics. He got side control after a short fight but I got on my side and prevented head control. He had my arm pinned against me but I bumped it through and got my underhook. I couldnt sweep or sneak out the back but it was much easier than bearing his weight on my chest. Baby steps! I’ll build off of this small victory!! Thanks Chewy!!

When I was in High School we had 2 seniors at the 175 level. I was a 10th grader at the same weight and so they pushed me up to heavy weight and at times I had to wrestle guys up to 400 pounds! I learned something vital - do NOT go for a take down. The heavier guy just collapses on you. Reach across to the far arm and push yourself - not them around to the side using 2 arms to control one. You can't move them but you can push yourself around to their back. I used to do this every match and win quite often giving up over 100 pounds most times. However - I was faster and had more stamina. Once I got the back I would trip them get the take down and stand up pushing away from them. Are you going to submit them? No, you are going to control them and not get trapped under.

Thanks for sharing Steve. Have you had anymore successes? There are a couple guys I roll with that I give up at least 80+ pounds to. Once he gets SC or mount I get gassed super fast. I have such a hard time handling that weight on me. I’m hoping this will help.

I am just starting my BJJ journey and I am one of the bigger guys at my gym (225 pounds). I find myself getting matched up with the bigger guys all the time (as I should). Not knowing what to do when they get side control like this is a definitely flaw in my game. This video will hopefully be a game changer.

just another KZbin channel actually, I hear that’s changed now. New rules say that a variance of 2lbs either way is now acceptable, which would mean anything between 298lbs and 302lbs is within the range. Regulating this is going to be hard though 🤔

As a longtime grappling instructor I'm going to say that every now and then you come across a very good breakthrough technique - I'd call this strategy one of those rare moves that is simple and workable. I taught this sidemount stalling/escape at my class tonight and had it used against me time and again . I thought , 'stone me, I've made a rod for my back, teaching this technique !" It's a SIMPLE, HIGH PERCENTAGE move . Many thanks to Chewjitsu.

At 6'2 and 195, I'm not exactly small, but I rolled at a new gym tonight where I was grouped up with two body builders and an active duty Marine, all of whom were around 6'4 and easily 200+ lbs. This video saved some of my dignity if nothing else! (I'm still a white belt, so it's not like I expected to dominate, but at least save some face haha!) Great techniques!

@walkingcorpse1224

ForzaTerra89 Either hip up or shrimp away until I get that space to get the other underhook in and just keep repeating and exploding. Sometimes however I can make space to get to Half Guard and I only need the one underhook (make sure it's on the same side u have the leg in half guard position) and get to dog fight position and either take the back, sweep and during practice I sometimes get a calf crush. If u can't move ur opponent, move urself. And then there are just times when ur stuck and ur opponent is gana have to make a move. Push urself tho like at the last 2 minutes or so tho.

What I like the most about this is it is just a basic thing (getting out of side control ), but you prep it better. The things you showed here made me think, in my normal rolling routine this is much better than always falling on my back and trying to go Step 1 do this, Step 2 then this. This is just simple prep and flow. Thanks Chew

Whenever I get passed I think damage mitigation and go all in on fighting the crossface and possibly redirecting that arm across so I can sit up but man I forgot how important keeping them from getting the underhook and not being flat was. I'll definitely be tucking that arm from now on so I can peak the elbow out into my own underhook just like you said. I also really appreciate the worst case escape you demonstrated too. I've seen getting that underhook from bottom taught three different ways and yours kept it real about how far in you'll get that hand before you have to bridge to deepen it.

Love this vid, I use the underhook escape alot, but in this video you showed me alot of details I didn't know and now I know that I'm actually doing the technique wrong. Since I practice with alot of smaller guys, it's so easy to move them and I guess I never knew my technique was bad, but now that I saw ur video, now I can start practicing it the correct way, the way u showed me. +Chewjitsu is the side of the hand meant to act as a stop for the body? It has a lot of weight to counteract and my tricep and rotator cuff seems weak with that much weight on top to have any real leverage. I am trying to refrain from using the palm, but is difficult not to. Could you elaborate a bit on this detail?
@Chewjitsu
@Chewjitsu 8 жыл бұрын
When you say side arm. Are you talking about the top arm near my face or the bottom one pressed against my body ?
@snorlaxcom
@snorlaxcom 8 жыл бұрын
+Chewjitsu the one placed on his hip. I feel my tricep super weak in this position and my rotator cuff activates hard here. Is that normal?
@Chewjitsu
@Chewjitsu 8 жыл бұрын
+snorlaxcom Well the most important part about tucking the arm is to deny the under hook. From there if you're tucked in tight it should be a big push with the tricep. It will involve the rotator a bit but shouldn't be anything where you're straining to move your arm. The key is to peek out the elbow and not lead with the hand. From there circle with the arm. In most positions I find that this is the easiest way to fight for under hooks. If you'd like a more in depth video on the under hook let me know. I'll make a video solely on that if it would be helpful.

Nice details on how you use that underhook. I have to rethink my traditional "big guy" escape. I frame and re-guard (but Im extremely flexible) and I am expending far more energy doing so than you are here. The chopping underhook and how you flare it I expect will be a huge help.

I’m a white belt, I did BJJ for 3 years. 15-18 years old. Just came back into it at 24 years old and got a buddy from work to join me. He was a state champion wrestler and has about 60 pounds on me. First couple days he couldnt pass my guard and I’d submit him with a triangle or Kimura. He realized he can dominate me from side control. Gonna give this a try.

I’m 6’ 200lbs and there are guys who have flattened me that are 100lbs heavier and it really sucks to get crushed by them. I’m gonna try this.

Wow! Knee on Belly and this Side Control are a real nightmare for me, anytime i feel that pressure on my chest i think about to quit BJJ XD. Sometimes i roll with heavy guys like that man and i hate when they get me in that position. Thank you Master for this technich

Can you do a tutorial on the “kraken choke”? From gaurd, back and side control. A lot of videos already out there, they just don’t slow down the steps or get different angles.

Here's a great side control escape I did on a bigger guy. You get on your side facing towards their legs. Then push their head away while simultaneously you flop over on to your belly. Then get up in a sprawl position. Keep holding their head down. Just like how he's on his side then push their head flop over get up into a sprawl position. You do it in a burst as explosive as you can.

Perfect for someone who's 130 and everyone is basically 300lbs, when they've got side control. Do you know any drills to instill the proper reaction for the crossface/underhood prevention before they end up in side control? Also, any tips for scarf hold?

I’ve been having the opportunity to train with some extremely high level bjj and wrestlers and I’ve been having an issue from side or passing, even when fighting these, the high level guys are quick to bring their hips up and step around to take the back or at least they try to and I have to restart at trying to get half guard
