Coach Julia! I just want to thank you! I’m self-taught and I was practicing my toe 3-turn. I just wanted to come back to this video and give you a huge kudos and a thank you for your excellent coaching. I haven’t had a private lesson in almost a year because money was tight, but I continued to teach myself new skills using your videos. I used this video to teach myself the toe loop last september. I just showed my toe loop to my new coach this morning and she had absolutely NO corrections to make!!! She said it was technically very very good! Julia, thank you for your clear and thorough explanations of skating skills, and to anyone who wants to figure skate but doesn’t quite have the budget for it: if you watch these videos closely and are very stringent with yourself in your training you can absolutely learn to figure skate without learning bad habits!

I seem to have seen video of skaters going into toe loop jumps from an outside three-turn followed by stepping on to an outside edge before the toe jump - wondering if such movements before jumps (such as turns before salchows) might be made to create momentum.

I am a gold level adult skater and I never had coaches catch me on the fact that I was doing a waltz until now I think part of it is I have absolutely no turn out. It’s probably the worst case scenario and I feel like this is a struggle for me. Any additional pointers for a closed hip person would be greatly appreciated especially when coming out of a salcow.

I was just showing my skating partner this video and he kept saying "I don't see the difference between leading with the heel or the toe." At first I thought he was silly to say that, but after watching more carefully, he's right. Although Coach Julia emphasizes the difference and makes it look obvious the first time she demonstrates leading with the toe, the second time she does it faster and you really can't see the difference. The difference is actually small and subtle. It just pertains to when the right foot leaves the ice, but it's just barely a difference. If you lead with the toe the right foot it going to make a half or quarter turn in the air. If you lead with the heel it's going to make a 3/4 turn. That's a small difference. In both cases the left toe pivots on the ice and is pointing forward when the right foot jumps, and ends up mkaing only a half turn. Play the video at 0.25x speed and pause the video at 3:41. The right foot is juuuust leaving the ice and the heel of the blade is still touching the ice and the toe is already in the process of turning forward, it has already turned 90 degrees just at the moment of leaving the ice. Meaning that if you were to just jump a little late you would be leading the jump with the toe. At that same instant you can see that the left foot has pivoted around, on the ice, and is facing forward, the same as if you cheated. Pause at 4:19 where Coach demonstrates leading with the toe for the 2nd time and you can see that the left toe is pointing forward, just as if she were doing it correctly, and the right blade is leaving the ice while pointing forward. That's bad, but it's just a quarter turn more than correct, and the blade is moving fast so it's going to be hard to see.

Thank you so much for this video ❤ Your tutorials are so helpful! I've been struggling with correct take off for toe loop for weeks... and today I tried ''for fun'' to do this on the other direction... and surprisingly the take off was much better with the first try on the clockwise direction than counterclockwise after weeks of training. Could you explain how to check which side is better, which direction of rotation is better for me? I have no coach, and I'm the only figure skater in my town... I will be really thankful if you could help 😊 and thank you so much for all your videos!

In which direction do you turn?
@TheLarryBrown
@TheLarryBrown 9 ай бұрын
In general if you are right handed, it will feel more natural for you to turn counter-clockwise, as stated in this video. However it can vary. Try both directions and if one feels more natural to you, do it that way.

when you say that leading with your toe on the Toe Loop Jump is a "cheated toe loop" does that mean that you get points taken off at competitions for it? Aside from that, are there other reasons that it helps to lead with your heel on this jump?
@TheLarryBrown
@TheLarryBrown 9 ай бұрын
You would not get points for your toe loop, because you didn't do a toe loop. That's like asking if you will get points taken off your double rotation jump if you only do a single rotation. But what she means by "cheated" is that you attempted to do a toe loop, couldn't, and so you did something else that somewhat approximates a toe loop but isn't. The main reason to lead with your heel is because that's what a toe loop is. If you don't lead with your heel, then you're not doing a toe loop. If you want to do a toe loop you need to lead with the heel as explained in the video, simple as that.

I'm far away from this jump, but I want to be able to do the exam next year. Is that realistic 1 year progress as an adult? I'll join a camp in summer and I'll have the whole next season = 3-4 × training per week. Love your videos so much! I have to watch it 10 times but it always clicks. I also really appreciate that you name the exercises one should master first, cause that really helps with the preparation. If I wasn't on the other side of the ocean, I'd totally book you!

I have a big mental block with jumps in general. When I do get confident enough to actually try to jump it turns into a very cheated toe waltz. I'm an adult in my mid-late twenties. I injured myself a year and a half ago skating and it took me a long time to get my confidence back and to get to the point I'm at now. What tips do you have?

Your explanations are just excellent! I anticipate starting on the Salchow and then toe loop with my coach in the next 4-6 weeks. Really enjoyed the slow motion at 4:35 ( a lot of other slow motion videos out there are still too fast). From what I can tell, one doesn't actually have *both* feet off the ice for a full 360 degree rotation on this, is that correct? For some reason I always had it in my mind that that's what singles are, but maybe they're not? Been trying to find actual diagrams showing the foot placements on the ice vs. air, but without any luck.
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia Жыл бұрын
The salchow and toe loop are considered full rotation jumps, but are actually more like 3/4 rotation jumps. You don’t have true full rotations until the flip and lutz.

No, it is not easy. You will need to buy a good quality pair of skates ($400 or more), get in class, skate every week, at least two days per week, and practice. You will only slowly get better. If you do all that, in a year you might be able to skate pretty good.
