How To Do Titrations | Chemical Calculations | Chemistry | FuseSchool
Learn how to carry out titration experiments.
In this video, you will learn what apparatus needs to be used to conduct a titration, including pipettes, burettes and conical flasks.
Titration experiments enable us to work out the exact concentration of an unknown solute, when we know the concentration of another solute. You can calculate the concentration of acids and alkalis through this method.
You may need to use an indicator to help you spot when the acid or alkali has been neutralised.
This video shows you how to carry out the experiment, and then you will also need to know how to do the calculations to actually find the concentration.

This is very disappointing. I am usually very eager to show my students your videos. However, such a glaring mistake in the reading of the burette, not only leads to misconceptions but gross confusion as well. Additionally, in all of my years of studying and teaching chemistry we have NEVER used universal indicator or litmus in a titration!!! NEVER!! If you use Universal indicator how do you know when to stop? What about properly discussing end point? This is an important part of a titration. I STRONGLY suggest you all remove this sloppy video and do a better one. Too many students depend on you!

I'm lucky, in my titration exam, the school sets out our equipment for us to save time, including the chemicals and indicator we need to use. I just have to remember the process and calculations, which I personally find the most difficult part to memorise and do.

It was told by my teacher that before we transfer the solution into the conical flask using a pipette, we make the solution in volumetric flask up to 250cm^3 mark by diluting it. So doesn't it change solution's concentration when we do this as in my view diluting any solution means making its concentration to decrease? Please explain God Bless you guys!
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 3 жыл бұрын
The solution in the volumetric flask is made by weighing the solid (say x grammes) and making the solution up to exactly 250ml. You then know the concentration of the solution that goes in the burette. Normally you make the solution up (using maybe 100 ml of distilled water) in a conical flask which sometimes needs heating. You then pour the cooled solution into the 250lm flask, followed by several washings to insure all the weighed solid goes into the flask. NOW you have to make the volume up to 250 ml by adding distilled water. You now have 'x' g of solid in exactly 250 ml - a concentration of 4x g per litre.

There are specialised indicators that are used for acid and alkali titrations, such as: Phenolphthalein indicator for strong acid + weak alkali. Methyl orange indicator for strong alkali + weak acid.

@@fuseschool You're completely wrong! According to my chemistry textbook & my teacher, if strong acid is present, use methyl orange if strong alkali is present, use phenolphthalein if strong acid + strong alkali, both are ok

But the problem is that Phenolphtalein only changes color when the pH reaches 8,2, way beyond 7. So you are always measuring a higher acid concentration than it realy is.

same apparatus pic seemed to be used for the pipette and the dropper for the indicator. Also some of the words are indistinct - perhaps an accent problem. Enough to make it tricky to follow if you don't have that accent I am afraid. Yes just after STEPS ... I think it needs to look more different from the dropper - need to see the mark where its a known amount .. and probably see the bulb thing looking more realistic ...
