A good strat for Bulgaria is to release them so that the Ottomans can't get to some of their territories and just let rebels do the work for you. Kinda like how sometimes rebels will just claim the various Greek islands for you. Mamluks joining that coalition is pretty unexpected for sure

there’s a couple things i’ve learned if you really like the min max strategy for byz. in your first war with ottomans you can take the entire coastline so they can’t return to the northern balkans and bulgarian separatists spawn in your country but siege them down instead letting you conquer faster. also cheesing them on the straight crossing by letting the army cross but then blockading again to stack wipe them is excellent for war score

I usually take lands up to Serbia in the first war so I can then attack Serbia and get Kosovo as soon as possible

The biggest reason why the Otto-man stayed on medium or high enthusiasm was likely the relative army strength of the coalitions.

Roman playthrough is always good! I think if i were you, i conquer kostendil to release Bulgaria and also for border with Serbia, becauae kirkilliste is byz core, but your strategy is also good Also europa expanded recently updatet mission tree for Byzantium, you can try it offcam, its very cool Maybe some modded playthrough someday?

Nicaea in the AnteBellum mod is the closest I can think of. Greek break away state from Byzantium, can obtain the Prussian militarization mechanic, and if that's not enough their mission tree focuses on recreating Alexander's empire with the option of going Hellenic Pagan. 10/10, very fun.

Breaking a truce is almost never worth it. It gives you tons of AE which is why the Mamluks joined the coalition.

I believe if you declare reconquest using Bulgarian core you still don't pay extra diplo to take your own last core, though I think the other way around you do :) what a very reasonable system :P

Haven't played much Byzantium lately. I think I need more DLCs before I can really do a run of it. As most Byzantium strategies tend to require things that just don't happen on my playlist. Like the Ottomans on my run always go for Byzantium first usually about 3 months after the game starts. I think there's some DLC that alters that behavior. I just forget which one. Only time I ever got the Ottomans to not instantly go for the throat was when I was playing Mamluks and allied Byzantium mostly to mess with the Ottomans (and hope to get drawn into an early war with them). It kept the Ottomans from declaring a war... but eventually Byzantium's AI declared a war against the Ottomans and refused to call me in, leading to their destruction.

You don't need the allies at all and if you sit on those European provinces for three to four years you can reach around 80% war score which is enough to take all of Greece and some of the black sea coast.

tbh; you don't really need albania and the knights to do this; If you do it without em I would build like 2 - 4 more galleys though edit: the high enthusiasm is likely due to their numbers; takes a bit for the reality to sink in if they outnumber you vastly

@@Chewyshoot nothing wrong with how you handled it, but you did ask how we played it out in the current patch; to add to "without the knights and albania, I also wait out the warscore in the first war to take a bit more; get a border with kosovo in the peace deal and fabricate a claim on the gold mine. on the flip side; I tend to lose a lot more ducats than you did

Really good video. I always love byz. I don’t get this trucebreaking strategy though. It’s just unnecessary ae and the stab and exhaustion hits just cost a bunch of money. IMO its just better to not use allies besides Albania , focus on mil mana with an advisor and try to reach tec4 before ottomans in the first war. Then you can stop the blocking of the strait and kill their stacks that cross to Constantinople one by one, weakening them and getting warscore by winning battles. It’s a lot microing, but you can get 90% ws. While at war you spy on Serbia and Wallachian which are often guaranteed by ottos. Then in the peacedeal you take all coastline in Europe and the province bordering Albania and Serbia. Then you attack who of them is guaranteed by ottos, calling them in and occupy all remaining Otto Land in balkan, whitepeacing them and resetting the truce to 5 years. Then you fully annex Serbia or wallachia. If it’s Serbia you core them and if it’s wallachia you just release them. Then you spawn Bulgarian rebel’s by lowering autonomy in your new cores and they will pop up. Then you can immediately take them and afterwards attack ottos again for their lands in Asia minor. This strategy let’s you become a great power in 1460.

Not to be a backseat gamer but i think you shouldve blocked the ottomans from moving their troops in to the balkans by taking all the costal provinces, then release bulgaria and support bulagrian rebels in the balkans so they can enforce their demand so you gain the lands without getting any AE

all veteran eu4 players dont recommend to release bulgaria because it would just add big vassal to deal with. instead they wait for rebels to siege ottoman provinces so they get released as bulgaria , and then they annex all bulgaria. AE for taking bulgaria is non existant. they are orthodox and almost nobody in their culture group is alive. only serbia albania and wallachia will care. and they have their own problems from venice and hungary. and you are probably allied to at least one of them so no coalitions or anything

u could easly get %70 war score than get full cores except edirne and uskup ohri silistre tolcu. after that just atack serbia probably granteed by ottomans than only get full money from them.w8 bulgaria rebels and create bulgaria as vassal. so u can get all balkans from ottomans only one war.
