Another inside practice point (hope I can describe this one)… I note that often casts blow up on folks when their casting stroke, front to rear and rear to front, get out of plane. The shoulder tends to rotate as folks move their arm back, causing a curved stroke line instead of staying in the efficient straight flat plane. Remember, the line goes in the direction you speed up and stop the rod tip… So, my indoor practice tip to create straight line casting strokes. Get a pencil and hold it as if you were holding a rod. If no pencil is handy, make a fist and point your index finger; this will simulate the rod. Face yourself in a mirror and slowly move your arm back in a casting stroke motion. Watch the pencil - does the end stay in straight line? Forward and back? At what part of the stroke does it deviate from the straight path? Change lengths of hd stroke to see at what part of the stroke it gets out of plane/straight line. Make adjustments accordingly. Ideally a person can use just the butt section of a rod, but a pencil or index finger work great, too. I’ve observed and participated in many casting events with novice through expert, and getting out of plane is a huge issue for novice and often intermediate casters. Remember, practice is important, but practicing right is even more important. Be well!
