Here's a video on how to drain a waterbed. Make sure you have some strong helpers because this is a tough job. In this specific video we will be draining a waterbed without a pump. modernhomemakers.com/2012/11/h...

Travis, I just want to thank you. We just found a small leak in our water and needed to drain ASAP to find it and your tutorial worked like a charm.

It went well, but unfortunately, we threw in the towel and no more waterbeds for us. In the last 15 years, we have replaced our mattress 3 times and don't want to find, repair, or replace a waterbed mattress again. They don't make them like they used to, I guess.

This video was very helpful, and pointed out a number of issues we hadn't thought of. I'd like to add a few hints from our experience today, when we drained our waterbed in about an hour. First thing - we didn't have two kids (dead weight!!) to use, so we got two small cinder blocks and used them to hold down the water valve as far as it could go. That way, we got the maximum amount of water out on the first siphon. We pulled up the far ends of the mattress, and "blocked" them with a suitcase, a laundry hamper, etc., to keep the remaining water close to the valve. Second - we put the two mattress valves into the bath tub and lifted up the opposite end of the mattress to get the remaining water out of the bed. This was not as physically challenging as you might imagine. We wanted to get as much water out as possible, because we are replacing the mattress. But again, good video - very helpful!

Thankyou, I'm dreading this task (relocaring waterbed to another house soon), but you made it look so easy! Mine has a baffle- basicly a big sponge so getting enough water & weight outta that will be a real challenge on my own & dreading getting it into the new place even harder :( but no way am i ditching it as had a waterbed most of my 62yrs of adult life, they are the best!

You people are really good and funny. I wish my waterbed was that easy, a 100% waveless bed is not that easy to get the water out of. I pumped the water out for 15 hours and it stilled weighed 350 lbs. Think about the waveless and all that foam, like a giant sponge.

Thank you so much for this great video! My husband passed away last year and I'm planning on moving so I need to drain the bed and get rid of the patch covered mattress. I am planning on draining it this weekend and my very strong son is going to help, so I am very grateful for you taking the time to show how it's done. Sadly I have purchased a conventional gel type mattress and it truly is an end of an era after 30 years but makes more sense for me now.

Cute! :) Draining mine now. 20 something year old mattress was leaking so finally got a new modern one . The baffles in this old one let go years ago and all floated to the bottom. We may as well have been sleeping on a water balloon. (That's why I had a 4 inch memory foam on top!) Thanks for the video! Great job! :)

Thanks Beth. After sleeping on a "water balloon" my entire childhood I had a hard time transitioning to the firmer baffles when we first got it. Now I love them... except for when we move haha!

Nice video, I've just moved my Queen sized Hydrobed for the fourth time but was researching for a video as my hubby is on the other end of the country having to assemble without me and for the first time, Don't know if others have explained but if you want to know... 1. filling hose works because when you disconnect from tap as water comes out it creates a vacuum behind it that sucks the water in the water bed out. I believe the longer the gravity drop the faster it empties, but not sure. What is your experience? 2. For those who don't have a handy tap like us, fill from sink/bath after sticking one end out the window with a handy friend ready to cap it with a thumb and shout when water comes out steadily. Detach/cap the sink end of hose and bring it to bed and insert. Then gather filled hose and uncap/drop all of it out the window. We did this without the blue plastic tool b/c we were missing the attaching piece. 3. my bed is filled with loss fiber mat so folding it like you did would wreck it. three of us rolled it from the far end making sure we had a grip on the mat to keep it in place and keeping it square and got an amazing amount out compared to regular rolling. Still very heavy. Then we unrolled it, made sure the matting was even (it wasn't, not easy to fix) then rolled it from the side so it made a longer sausage and 4 men could carry it. :)
@modernhomemakers9 жыл бұрын
Those are great tips! I never would have thought to roll it. We have the foam baffles on the inside so it's always a pain to straighten them after we move! Thanks for sharing :-)

If you drain out as much water as possible then remove hose or cut a 1 ft hose you can get just about all of the water out by stretching it out again and roll it up and let the water drain into plastic bin while still on the wood frame. My kingsize matress now weighs about what it did when bought it. Thank for you video as helped alot as gravity works much faster than magic pump into sink.

The waterbeds with fiber fill are so heavy even after you drain them. After you get most of the water out and folding it - a wet vac can pull out a lot more. We did this and after we got out as much water as we could, (empty the wet dry vac) then we changed the hose to the outtake on the wet dry vac and used it to blow air into the mattress to dry out the fiber fill. You might have to use a narrow attachment on the wet dry vac, but it works great and it helps to level the fiber fill back out when it is drying.
@modernhomemakers8 жыл бұрын
+lfmccain That's a great tip! Drying the thing out would HAVE to make it lighter :-)

@MDC8855 жыл бұрын
I have to drain a cal king size mattress with five layers of fibers, nearly waveless. It's on the second floor, and I can run a hose pretty far down. Do you think gravity will be enough? I hate to buy a pump just for this one job!

This is a great video. I wish I could've shown it to my landlady, she had an idea of how to drain my waterbed, but it involved her slashing it with a box cutter while. Truly sucks.

@carolineroche968610 жыл бұрын
Modern Homemakers It was honey, apparently she has a strict rule against all inflatables, footballs, beachballs, inflatable beds etc. She usually enforces this rule by bursting or puncturing said inflatables without the owners consent. She told me she wanted it out of the house and I agreed, telling her I'd need help from a friend. When I came back she came into the house saw it was still up and just took out a box cutter, threw off the sheets and slashed the waterbed like it was nothing. I guess she didn't understand it was a WATERbed not a inflatables mattress, because when it started to leak water she blamed me then just stabbed it some more with the box cutter as if it would deflate it easier.
@modernhomemakers10 жыл бұрын
Caroline Roach There's a pretty big difference between a beach ball and a waterbed... pretty weird rule!

Ok where do I find the kit? I have to empty a water bed from a house I’m cleaning out, I’ve never had a water bed, windows don’t open, closest sink/ bathroom is 61 feet away and I have a 50 foot hose. Any advice?
@MarvelDcImage11 жыл бұрын
I know this will sound stupid but what if you fill out the bed with air only?
@4paulseyes6 жыл бұрын
I've been on water for 30 years now. Always used a hose to syphon the water out when needed to. I wouldn't fold and bend the bladder up like that. The container isn't needed either. Next time just roll it onto the sheet. You can drag the bladder easily just on that. I replace my bladder every 4 years or when I have moved before because it's not that expensive at $400 and so much easier ...
@modernhomemakers6 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness I don't know why I never though of the sheet! Seriously great idea :-)

Thanks for posting this. Do you happen to know if you can put a waterbed on the top floor of a 2 story house? Or will it be too heavy?
@AdjacentJason3 жыл бұрын
They say that it actually distributes the weight evenly enough that a water bed is less heavy per square inch than a washing machine or dryer. So if you could have a washer or dryer on the top floor then you should be able to have a waterbed
