I took that bottom shield off my Rav4 about 2 years ago. I hated taking it off and putting it on and it didn't seem to do much since nothing bad's happened without it. If I were planning to keep my car few more years I would've replaced it with a sheet metal one, probably. I never knew about squeezing the hose. i did this drain and refill two summers ago. I'm going to do it again tomorrow when I also do the transmission filter, and replace that fluid (not a flush, my car has 210,000 mikes, not risking screwing up the transmission flushing it), and I'll be doing the differential and transfer case fluids, too. I also need to do all 4 discs, pads, and the front struts and sway bar links, but I think I'll wait another day for that.

There looks to be a square cutout in the bottom of that shield near the coolant drain plug. Is that something that can be opened to access the drain plug and save effort on removing the whole shield?

The only question I have is how many jugs of coolant did you use to refill?

Great video. Never ceases to amaze me the RUST on the cars that y’all work on. I’m so happy I don’t live up north. That concept is totally foreign to me

I know with other vehicles sometimes it's recommended to do 1 cycle of distilled water with the engine running for ten minutes to remove any loose particulates throughout the coolant system. Do we not need to worry about that with the 2015 Rav4? If so that saves me a lot of time lol :D Awesome video too!

The owner's manual for our 2009 RAV4 just says to drain and refill the cooling system. It says nothing about flushing.
@Chitown388 Жыл бұрын
is there a coolant draining from the engine block for the Rav4? On some Lexus models, in addition to draining the coolant from the radiator, the coolant is also drained by loosening a bolt on the engine block.

@OMGtheykilledKenny423 жыл бұрын
You should have 2 gallons if you're not doing a whole flush of the system, just a drain and refill.
@njsongwriter2 жыл бұрын
You can just top it off. See your owner's manual. It's supposed to be changed car 100,000 miles or ten years. After that it's every 5 years or 50,000 miles.

Will you need to remove any hose
@sandhillsblues79133 жыл бұрын
Why no mention of draining the block? It's not a fluid change if you don't drain the block.
@Paul-cb2rb2 жыл бұрын
Yep, correct. There are two drain points. The second location is just in front of the oil pan 👍🏼
@njsongwriter2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what I'm looking for the... the location of the drain on the block.

Some videos claim that there is no drain on the block for a 2009 AR-FE engine.

I have the 17 rav4 platinum is it the same just drain and refill right?
@billmoyer32546 ай бұрын
there's no need to remove the valance. The drain valve will loosen with finger pressure.
@thetroutconjurer3 ай бұрын
There should be an air bleed screw at the highest point where air gets trapped. That needs to be loosened until fluid comes out.

If you can't open the drain with pliers, you said to forget about it and drain with a hose. How?

Is one gallon enough to fill it up?
@1AAuto4 жыл бұрын
+Fai Chiu No, the tech in the video is pouring a 5 qt jug in when refilling. Thanks for the question.
@njsongwriter2 жыл бұрын
The capacity of the cooling system for our 2009 RAV4 is about 7½ quarts. Buy two jugs just in case. Return one if you don't use it.

For trans fluid people always say use Honda or Toyota branded fluid. Is that true of coolants?
@njsongwriter2 жыл бұрын
Not according to my owner's manual. But you should not mix different types. And the more expensive types have a longer life and don't need to be changed as often.
@andrewhurley41352 жыл бұрын
You can get a different brand and it will be labeled for Toyota. Usually each car requires a certain color. I used Zerex Red for my Toyota. For transmission fluid I only use Toyota brand.

Not every day you change the coolant, so while your at it, might as well put in a new thermostat at the same time.

Buy the premixed Super Long Life coolant from the dealer. Then you don't need to mix it with water. It's only a couple dollars more per jug than from an auto parts store.

Toyota body panels on any model are the cheapest, flimsiest pieces of plastic on the market. Toyota bodies always fall apart.
@ちくてぬしくけて3 жыл бұрын
Lmao.... so true!!! The plastic tabs are the first to go.... after that, bye bye panel. I have a 2012 rav4 with original 4cyl and original 4spd slushbox transmission that has 520k miles. The frame will rot and fall apart before the engine gives... hahahah!
